“ That’s little kids for you, I suppose, ” said Theodore, convienently ignoring the fact that he and Reynie were young child- ren as well. “ But you and I are going to have to find those copies. She can’t have hidden them anywhere too hard to locate. ”
“It would be nice to explore the house again,” Reynie reflected. “I haven’t really been through the attic. At all, actually. But I know Constance hid them in a place I haven’t been in a while. Just to test me.” His mind darted to another place he hadn’t been to in a while, which was unfortunately outside. With a sinking feeling, he briefly wondered if Constance had buried the books outdoors after all.
unusuallygifted:
Several things.
First on the list: Hal’s American-Style Diner was on fire. Of course, Hal’s had not been around for as long as, say, Cupp’s Cafe, but Hal’s had been around long enough to have become one of the city’s main staples. Second: Theodore could not very well focus on this because he had people to herd out and keep safe, making absolutely sure that not a single one of them had gotten hurt. The most the customers had received were bits of tiny, very miniscule glass stuck to their food, although they had had to leave those be- hind in the establishment. Third: Bobby was rushing straight into the fire. In any given situation, Theodore would’ve done so himself, but seeing as Bobby had lunged in first, Theodore was automati- cally in charge of crowd control. Fourth: crowd control was hard.
The fire had spread from the kitchen all the way to the rest of the diner, and it was burning up unsurprisingly fast. The people beside Theodore were either mourning, hysterical, or completely dazed. Some- one offered to phone the fire department in a nearby telephone booth, and some others were worried that there could have been people in the kitchen. Theodore, for his part, was worried that Bobby would not make it out alive, but he did, not too long after, and Theodore had to push past the gathering crowd to make it to him.
By the time he had arrived, Bobby was alone. This struck Theodore as odd, be- cause he had been under the impression that Bobby had had someone else with him when he’d stepped out those doors.
“ You alright, mate? Unharmed? ” he asked quickly upon approaching the o- ther, who, frankly, looked quite like he’d just seen a ghost (or worse). “ What hap- pened in there? ” He was hoping against hope that no one inside the kitchen had died, but a part of him highly doubted it.
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine, it’s cool,” was the only answer Bobby gave to Theo, because he was still wrapping his mind around how Saint Dane could have followed him here so fast and what the hell he was planning on doing here?!
Calm down, Bobby, calm down. Right about now he wanted to slam his head into the wall and scream, because Saint Dane had just blown up a diner full of completely innocent people -- to do what, again? Oh yeah. Just to mess with Bobby.
Go figure.
“We have to get out of here,” On instinct, he reached out to grab Theo’s arm. “I...I saved everyone I could.” He hoped. “Do all of these people live around here? Can we get them back safely?”
