Anyone who has ever brushed shoulders with Jongsuk would say that the man is an angel. He is the image of a good citizen of South Korea: a strong, unbiased advocate for justice, he will stand up for the underdogs if it meant doing what was right; he is kind to everyone he meets and will remain polite regardless of whether the person he interacts with chooses to show him the same respect, and yet he is firm in his decisions that are often made with justice in mind; and frankly, he just has his life together, though he is not boastful.
So why is Jongsuk attempting to pick the lock of a house that he most definitely does not own?
The catch is, the man is one of the handful who will do absolutely anything for justice. He believes that crime never sleeps, and neither should the law: but the thing is, the law does not always guarantee justice; the times are few and far between, but sometimes, it stands in the way of it. This irks Jongsuk to no end, and so he believes it is his duty to carry out justice in a way that the law never can.
This has been his code of conduct in Seoul, and it will not change simply because he’s moved to Incheon.
He began scouring through old reports of the past—unsolved murders, strange fires and the like—and upon piecing all the information together, he believes he has found his next target: one Kim Myungsoo. The man is an arsonist, that much is clear from the fires that surround him wherever he treads—as well as the fact that he was imprisoned for the fire in his childhood home that killed his own mother—but what Jongsuk is really curious about is the strange death of his brother. The man had gone to prison for the murder of his mother, and Jongsuk believes that he has served his due, but still, Myungsoo has gotten away unscathed for his brother’s death. This, Jongsuk is unable to accept.
It is why he is not rummaging through the man’s apartment during office hours. The man works as a model, last he checked, and so hopefully Jongsuk will be able to find evidence and leave before Myungsoo returns.
But alas, luck is not with him, for he is midway through his hunt when he hears the knob of the front door begin to jiggle. The reporter runs his fingers through his hair as he attempts to calm his rapid breathing, and the thought of escaping does cross his mind, but Jongsuk knows that the only way out without getting caught is through a window, and unfortunately, the apartment is not on the first floor. So with gritted teeth, the reporter hits record on both his phone and mock tie clip, and he faces the man head on.
“Kim Myungsoo, the arsonist,” he calls through gritted teeth and heaving breaths, and if Myungsoo were confused by the entire situation—the entire apartment looks thoroughly ransacked—Jongsuk doesn’t give the man time to think before he begins speaking yet again, “I am Lee Jongsuk. Reporter for KBS. I’d like to interview you regarding the death of your brother.”
Jongsuk grips his phone tightly in his hands. Myungsoo could either start a fight or start running: but whatever the arsonist’s next course of action is, Jongsuk has never been more ready.
