Thinking is dreaming with words, dreaming is thinking with pictures—that’s the only difference. Dreaming is a primitive way of thinking, and thinking is a more evolved way of dreaming—more civilized, more cultured, more intellectual, but it is the same—only the pictures have been replaced by words. And, in a way, because pictures have been replaced by words, it has gone even farther away from reality, because reality is closer to pictures than to words.
well, that’s a very interesting way of “looking” at the subject but i don’t agree to whether either phenomenon is more sophisticated than the other for neither of these processes have been able to be scientifically explained as definitive truths.
also, who’s to say what one’s reality is indicative of? how can one prove to another that they truly exist and that they’re not a figment of their imagination or some sort of artificial simulation they lack control of? saying pictures are closer to reality than words is like saying the blind live outside of reality. and words with all their glory are merely man-made conventions, merely metaphors for what we envision, feel and observe. but the picture/word gab was a deviation from a grander yet more elusive question and that is from where do thoughts and dreams transpire?
i don’t have the answer for that but it’s also why i can’t necessarily say whether dreaming or thinking is more laudable than the other. as far as we know they could be the same thing. i mean what is a dream and what is a thought?
if dreams and thoughts occur in your mind then what separates them besides their classifications based off one occurs during rest and the other happens while one is awake. question: have you ever tried to stop having thoughts? i haven’t successfully achieved that and i would assume that would require the same amount of discipline it would take to have a lucid dream but that’s only my assumption. i only illustrate that to ponder if whether thoughts, dreams and even what we perceive as consciousness occurs somewhere externally from where we believe as reality.
i can go on forever about this and it would be to no avail but i’ll leave you with suggesting that you do some research on dimensions, that is if you haven’t already. i believe it would give some perspective on the topic. it was definitely nice waxing poetics about the intangibles of life and i look forward to your return.
