Warnings: Cursing, distress, angst, hurt with comfort, kissing, trauma,
The digital clock on the microwave read 8:34 a.m.
She sat at the kitchen island wrapped in one of Matt's hoodies, her knees tucked to her chest on the stool. The folded note rested in front of her like it might suddenly come alive if she looked away.
"Some things are better left buried."
Her mother's handwriting.
Every possibility they'd come up with during the night only raised more questions.
If her mother was alive...
Why wait all these years?
Matt hadn't slept either.
The second he'd realized she wasn't going to close her eyes, he'd quietly pulled a chair beside her.
"If you're staying awake," he'd said, "I'm staying awake."
Digging through old files.
Crossing possibilities off one by one until they were left with the same answer they'd started with.
They didn't know a fucking thing.
The whistle of the kettle pulled Dove from her thoughts.
Matt stood at the stove in a pair of gray sweatpants and a black T-shirt, carefully pouring hot water into her favorite mug.
A plate of toast and scrambled eggs sat beside the mug.
He carried everything over before setting it in front of her.
His smile disappeared almost instantly.
Just enough for the corners of his mouth to fall.
His eyes softened with quiet concern.
"You haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon."
"No," he said gently. "You're surviving on anxiety."
Silence settled between them.
He simply stood there looking at her with that impossibly patient expression.
His face relaxed just a little.
Why did he have to say it like that?
She sighed dramatically before picking up her fork.
But she noticed the tiny smile that returned to his face.
It made something warm bloom painfully inside her chest.
He disappeared to refill his coffee.
"Did you doubled security?" she asked quietly.
"Your estate is covered."
She swallowed hard. She didn't realize he would send more security to her estate when she had already had plenty there.
"You didn't have to do that."
"I'm not taking chances."
Like there wasn't another option.
She stared down into her tea.
Steam curled into the air between them.
He looked over immediately.
"They're here because of me."
"They could threaten you because you're helping me."
"They're watching your house because I'm here."
"They've put you in danger and—"
But it stopped her instantly.
He set his mug down before walking around the island.
The kitchen suddenly felt much smaller.
He stopped directly in front of where she sat.
Close enough that she could smell cedarwood and coffee.
His voice softened even more.
Dark circles sat beneath his eyes.
Her heart broke a little.
"What's going on in that head?"
"You've been spiraling for hours."
"You are the worst liar I've ever met."
The guilt rushed back in.
"If something happens to you..."
The words barely came out.
Matt's expression changed immediately.
"If something happens because of me..."
"I couldn't live with that."
The confession hung in the air.
"I already lost my parents."
Couldn't even finish the sentence.
Matt stepped even closer.
Until his knees brushed hers.
He reached up slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, before gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.
None of this felt rushed.
His voice was so quiet she almost missed it.
"You didn't ask for this."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"You didn't ask someone to hunt you."
"You didn't ask to lose your family."
His thumb brushed beneath her eye.
"And you sure as hell didn't ask me to help."
"I still dragged you into it."
"You didn't drag me anywhere."
His lips curved into the smallest smile.
A watery laugh escaped her.
He smiled a little wider.
The sincerity in his voice shattered whatever walls she'd managed to rebuild overnight.
"I don't want you getting hurt."
"You deserve better than this."
His eyebrows pinched together like she'd said something completely ridiculous.
His hand was still resting against her cheek.
Her heart beat painfully hard inside her chest.
She realized something then.
The idea of losing him...
Not because he was protecting her.
Not because she needed him.
Because somewhere between late-night conversations, cups of tea, shared files, stupid jokes, and quiet mornings...
The realization stole her breath.
Matt searched her face carefully.
He whispered her name like he was asking permission.
She answered by closing the tiny distance between them.
Like they were both terrified the other might disappear.
Her fingers curled into the front of his shirt.
When they pulled apart...
They stayed close enough that their foreheads rested together.
"I've been wanting to do that..."
A shy smile spread across Dove's face despite everything.
"Your eyes aren't exactly subtle."
He laughed—a real laugh this time—and for the first time since she'd found the note, the crushing weight on Dove's chest eased.
The danger was still out there.
Whoever had left that letter was still watching.
But as Matt gently intertwined his fingers with hers, Dove felt a strange kind of happiness.
