I know it's cliché and overdone but I really do think Nicky took celibacy very seriously until the very end (at Jerusalem) because 1. general piety and 2. crippling horror at his homosexual urges (which is why he and Desiderio never truly acted on anything. Nicky puts Joe's poetry to music through the ages. For me Nicky is the musical one, though his own personal compositions tend to be more simple, he turns Joe's poems into songs and plays them for easy money, sometimes.

Joe learnt Zeneize exclusively for Nicky, because frankly it has no other use except with him or with people from Genoa itself. It does get him out of a sticky situation once or twice, however, because why else would a man speak Genoese if he weren't from Genoa or its colonies? They're both woefully out of date with it now, though.

They have been married (entirely illegally) multiple times over the centuries, but they also have a challenge where they will get married (under fake identities) every time a new country legalises it. It has to be the whole country though, not a region. When Malta legalised it, however, that's when they got married under their real names.
