Everything around her seemed to have slowed down, and his voice sounded distant, as though through a haze, as she nodded gratefully but somewhat absent-mindedly in response, still silent and too weak to utter so much as at least one word. She was no stranger to danger and combat... or so she thought. She had willingly chosen to follow her father’s footsteps, becoming a Summoner in order to protect the innocent and be the symbol of hope they so desperately needed in such trying times, even if that meant that at the very end, she would cease to exist for the sake of humanity. This was a sacrifice she was willing to make.

But she was still too weak, too inexperienced.

None of the aeons she had made a pact with so far were strong enough to face a being so clearly out of this world, terrifying in its overwhelming might. They all fell, one by one, and it was a miracle that she was still alive. Its face and soulless eyes, void of any sign of emotion but primordial fury, were going to haunt her in nightmares for weeks and months to come. Slowly, as though the slightest haste would tear her lungs apart, she let out a sigh, deep and melancholic, her voice finally breaking the silence.

“That creature... what was it?..”
