i mean seriously. other than the fact that he canonically gets zero play, heās the pillar of hero society for the majority of his life. from the moment he steps into the world of heroism, heās under incomprehensible pressure from two separate pro heroes (torino and nana) to perform at an extremely high level at yuuei academy, right after getting his quirk. unlike midoriya, though, heās not in an environment of peacetime. all for one is at his peak, and it remains that way until after nana dies.
you meet in secondary school, and heās so committed to the idea of saving people that while he tries his hardest to make time for you, youāll always end up calling him while heās beating some villains with a metal pole. heās scared of getting too close to you because of what happened to his family back when he was young, which of course, you donāt know about, because heād never let something like that show, even if youāre close with him.
you meet at yuuei, and heās the golden boy of his year, charming and well-mannered and all sorts of awkward, with a crooked grin and unexpectedly firm handshake. and heās never available after school, and he canāt tell you anything about himself, and you confront him on it and he says he will change. he does not know yet that he canāt, not with what heās been burdened with. fundamentally, toshinori yagi canāt save everyone, but he just doesnāt realize that yetā¦
maybe you meet him in america, when heās an incredibly-powerful and shining figure from the faraway land of japan, cruising about in daveās tricked-out sports car and stopping villains on his morning commute to lecture. but heās no time for you; thereās always something else on his mind. you manage to get past his shell and learn his secrets, and you realize youāre on a clock ā that eventually, heāll return to japan, and he simply cant have you following him back there. thereās someone waiting for him across the ocean who will look at you and see someone else to take from him.
you meet him once he returns and starts dismantling all for oneās criminal empire. youāre a pro hero with a powerful quirk, and you can hold your own at his side during his patrols. youāre an old friend of nighteyeās, maybe, with the same stubbornness as he, and you worm your way into his save-them-all psyche and past his indomitable shields. you get a date once a month, maybe, often interrupted by some hero duty on one of your ends (usually his). by now heās coming to realize that with every new attack from all for one, heās got less and less time for you. and no matter how much he loves you, he wouldnāt pick all of japan ā the world, even ā over you. the plight of a hero is best seen in the heart of toshinori yagi.
letās say that despite this, you understand being second to the world. you can accept that, and you stick by his side. itās not easy, but you get by. at least until all for one learns about you, the person closest to all mightās heart. one way or another, he will find his way to you. through your loved ones, old coworkers, anyone youāve savedā¦ or someone you failed to. heās relentless in his pursuit of any crack in all mightās armor, and in you, he sees a chasm. and it ends for you this way: quirkless, dead, nomu-fied, or so mentally destroyed by his actions that you leave toshinori for the safety of everyone else. he will ensure, in some way, that you guys canāt stay together. heāll find the worst way to do it, and heāll succeed.
anywaysā¦ in the brief moments between disaster that you do get, heās soft. sweet. kind and apologetic. hardly the boisterous man you see on television, smile softened and hands sore from being curled into fists half the time. i like to think heās an acts of service type, alongside physical touch. constancy is the one thing he desires to give you in his tumultuous world of change, and yet he canāt give it. and you canāt give it to him, as much as youād like. itās doomed to fail, but youāre both chasing the chance.
