I’m sure you’ve noticed in your Chinese studies that there are some words for which you can switch the order of the characters and get a new word! In Chinese these can be called 倒序词. I’ve put together a list of 20 倒序词 pairs, most of which I’ve stumbled across over the past couple years. It’s so interesting to see the relationships between the words! Most example sentences are via Pleco.

牙刷 yáshuā - toothbrush 一把牙刷刷牙 shuā//yá - to brush one’s teeth 我每天睡觉前刷牙。

[END 2020] My Top 9 Danmei Novel Picks of the Year

As a part of my Round Up post for the year, here’s my pick of favourite danmei novels, that I’ve read! This is sort of an accompaniment to my previous danmei rec list over HERE, so there may be one or two overlaps, but I’ve read WAY MORE after that and am prepared to like give more options here

Note: There should be English translations for all via novel updates if you do a search of the English name, but I don’t think most of them are completed.

I’m leaving out the usual MXTX and Priest ones, because they’re already good and we all know that and there’re many carrds and posts dedicated to them.

I am also a sucker for fainting but smart men, and not too overly angsty/complicated storylines, just putting it out there first, which is why I haven’t read a lot of some of the ones on my queue list.

1. 一剑霜寒 | A Sword of Frost by 语笑阑珊

Summary: Jing Yan Ran is the Emperor’s brother and wields military power in the novel, and it starts with an object being stolen from the palace. Jing Yan Ran has to retrieve the item secretly, and so enlists the help of Feng Yu Sect’s Sect Master, Yun Yi Feng, who heads the martial arts world’s one and only information trading post. Yun Yi Feng does not deal in business that involves any royalty, but Jing Yan Ran offers him something he cannot refuse - the Blood Red Lingzhi, a rare and mystical herb that is rumoured to be able to treat his life-threatening condition.

Yun Yi Feng was used by his shifu when he was younger to test out all kinds of poisons and cures, and since then, his body flushes dangerously hot and cold frequently, with bouts of severe coughing fits in between. Throughout the first mission where he spends time with Jing Yan Ran searching for the stolen object, he allows Jing Yan Ran to take care of him, and they fall in LURVE pretty much like 10 chapters in.

Of course, they have to uncover a plot and conspiracy against their enemies who are plotting to dethrone the Emperor, and also reveal the secrets of Yun Yi Feng’s birth.

My Thoughts: AN ABSOLUTE FAVE AND GEM, I’d say this is my favourite danmei novel ever. This is both hilarious and tears-inducing, to be honest, because for most of the novel YYF knows he doesn’t have long to live and so in the beginning he knows of his own feelings for JYR and JYR also shows him that he loves him, but he is unable to officially reciprocate because he knows his body is like weakening day by day. Halfway through the fear that he’s literally about to die as they are JUST about to find the cure is real, and damn I cried so much at that. Some highlights:

YYF falls asleep very easily in baths and everywhere actually, and pretty much within the first 10 chapters he gets used to JYR carrying him around (even naked from the bath, he’s like oh well, okay cool) and taking care of him, and JYR ALWAYS makes sure he is warm and toasty under his cape

YYF LOVESSSS RICHES, PLAYING THE ZITHER AND COOKING - He’s good at gathering the first one, but he FUCKING SUCKS AS THE LAST TWO - It’s so funny because he’s so beautiful and handsome right, and when he sits down at the zither everyone is like OH DAMN WHAT A DREAM- and then he plays, and everyone’s fantasies is shattered, he’s ABYSMAL at it, and the same goes for cooking

JYR doesn’t actually have the Blood Red Lingzhi, and throughout the first arc, he feels SO DAMN GUILTY because YYF even carved out a pendant that looks like what he thinks the herb looks like, and like carries it with him everywhere LMAO

Chenqing’s name

So I’m back in nerd mode and this is something I haven’t been able to get out of my head. It’s honestly intrigued me so much and I somehow ended up writing a paper on a topic closely related to this, like??? MXTX’s power is too great.

So you all noticed how spiritual weapons have meaningful names which also reflect their owners’ personalities. For example, Bichen (避尘) translates to ‘avoid dust’ - it represents Lan Wangji’s desire to remain unsullied by dirt and filth, and it also relates to the name of his guqin, which is also his own name (妄机 - Wangji); Wei Wuxian’s Suibian (随便) reflects his carefree and humorous nature, etc.

Now I’m going to jump into ancient Chinese poetry for just a bit, bear with me, please.

Chenqing’s name comes from an ancient Chinese poem recorded in The Songs of the State of Chu (楚辞). A considerable number of poems in the anthology was written by Qu Yuan (屈原), a diplomat, politician and poet. He’s also known for being closely related to the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival. Anyway, Qu Yuan was very highly regarded during his time as a government official in the Kingdom of Chu. Not only was he respected by the king himself, he was one of king’s closest friends. He was trustworthy, intelligent, helpful, amazing at his job. His excellence and fame sparked jealousy among other government officials, all vying for achievements. So they started spreading rumors and slander. Unfortunately, the king believed the evil tongues and stopped trusting Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan eventually lost his status, power and was even banished. He reflects on his life in some of his poems, grieves for the lost friendship and the fallen kingdom. It is in his poem ‘Regret of Days Passed’ (惜往日) that he writes about his misery and dismay, and right there, in the midst of Classical Chinese writing do we encounter Chenqing’s name.

The exact line goes: ‘原陈情行白兮，得罪过之不意’ (the bold characters are Chenqing’s name). It translates to: ‘I wanted to state my feelings and make my actions clear, but I’d never thought they’d be taken for a crime’. Not being able to use the full forms of words due to the metrics, Qu Yuan contracts words by omitting characters. That’s how ‘chen’ (陈) ends up next to ‘qing’ (情). The ‘chen’ character comes from a two-character verb meaning ‘to state’, while the ‘qing’ character represents ‘affections, feelings’, so Chenqing’s name is very similar to the first part of the line.

So let’s round it up - Wei Wuxian, as we all know, had nothing but good intentions, but as we also know, they’re what paved the way to hell. He just wanted to do good and he did what he thought best at the time, geniunely not knowing it would turn out detrimental to others. As the poem says, he wanted to tell others about his intentions and beliefs, he just wanted to explain why he did what he did, but no matter what he said, he was thought of as a criminal, a lunatic, an evil cultivator. Like Qu Yuan, he had fallen from a highly-regarded person of importance to a lowly exiled wanderer drowning in his despair (I hereby formally apologize to Qu Yuan for this figure of speech), wishing for past days to come back, to right the wrongs, to do things better. Both of them eventually face tragic endings, each of their own - alone, miserable and inconsolable.

But!!! Wei Wuxian does get a happy ending, so at least we have that, hope I didn’t bring anyone’s mood down too much.

So yes, now I lay there crying because my heart hurts (along with my wisdom teeth) and this line, which I found so beautiful and heart-wrenching, especially having encountered it in Chinese, really intrigued me and sent me down a spiral. All that leads to me currently writing a senior year paper about none other than Qu Yuan and Horatio (If anyone has references to recommend, pls do, would be much appreciated!), which will determine a lot of things for me in my academic future.

Nie Huaisang’s outfits appreciation post

After the terrible loss of our second best dressed cultivator and fashion icon Nie Mingjue, the cultivation world now lacks one of it’s pillars. But little did they know, our fashion king had a disciple, someone capable of honoring his legacy in many ways.

While we all grief, a new icon rises.

And I’m here to prove that Nie Huaisang deserves his late brother’s title not only because Mingjue’s no longer serving looks -may his fashionable soul rest in peace-, but because Huaisang has always been a stylish icon on his own.

I mean, this look right here is enough proof:

Huaisang has quite a lot of robes, and they are all so different, I decided to compile them chronologically:

1. the “assigned fashionable at birth”one

Look at this small bean with his cream-colored robes. Whoever chose this color for him did a great job, though it’s a bit weird that they looked at baby Mingjue and went “all you’ll wear is dark gray from now on” and then Huaisang was born and “cream it is!” And we don’t really see anybody else from the Nie sect wearing this color, I wonder if it has anything to do with Huaisang’s mom, or if it’s just for the dark\light color contrast, the two young masters can’t possibly wear the same colors, it would ruin the aesthetic.

It looks just like his main-possibly-stay-at-home-robes, like he just really loved this especific set and had a lot of other robes that looked just the same growing up.

Really small, really cute, makes you want to carry him around saying: look at my baby, he’s so stylish!
