The trees were blackened.  A kind of black far removed from the night sky, a much bolder, nefarious and sinister tone.

The burnt pine odor raked itself into my lungs.  I swam away through the needles and cones until I could let out a true cough.  I needed to go back.

Sunlight, light from the sun, was above me, but beneath me was sorrow.  A sparrow flew above me, taunting, living, feeling.

I brought my hand to my chest and breathed. You need to breathe.  A brown dog ran past.  Sixteen year dog.  Still running past.
