Mars colony project will begin astro-colonist search in July
Even though colonists will never return to Earth, Mars One is expecting 1 million applications for its colonization project.
This is crazy! I wonder if it will be seen through.

Duck successfully fathers a chicken
First there was the seedless watermelon. Now ducks can father chickens. Is there anything we can’t accomplish through genetic modification?
Umm...What? This is no onion crap...

I just love this building by IM Pei. I have been looking at a lot of its abstractions and architectural details while developing my concept for the center. The way that Pei abstracted forms and shapes is just breathtaking.
It is going to be a late night tonight as I develop my concept further. Here is a sneak peak at the imagery I have chosen. I hope you like it!
Working out the elevator speech...
During this whole process of the senior capstone we are told to be thinking about our "elevator speech", which is just a way to state the basis of your whole project in about...let's say 30 seconds?
I have been trying to work out the kinks, let me know what you guys think:
"Serving Dearborn, Michigan, the community center targets young technologically affluent adults of Arabic decent locally and overseas through the use of social media, current world events, cultural appreciation, and community interaction. It turns a traditionally introvert activity into an extroverted activity performed with others in order to promote peace overseas."
Still needs some work but THE END!
Reminds me of my ECO_V project I did with my classmate Daegeon. Minus the Playboy part...

And it begins...
So we started the programming. For those of you who do not know what that means it is that WE STARTED DESIGNING! Right now we are in the very beginning of the space planning process deciding what types of space we are going to have and laying those out within the buildings based on their needed square footage, adjacency to other spaces, function, etc. Just a teaser till my next post I'll tell you all some types of space I am going to incorporate.
Television/Podcast Studio
Exhibition Spaces (permanent and changing)
Bakery/Cafe/Hookah bar
And that's all you get!!!! Get excited for the next post!
It is going to be an exciting one.

"A building should please everyone, unlike a work of art, which does not have to please anyone. A work of art is a private matter for the artist, a building is not. A work of art is brought into the world without there being a need for it, a building meets a need. A work of art has no responsibility to anyone, a building to everyone. The aim of a work of art is to make us feel uncomfortable, a building is there for our comfort. A work of art is revolutionary, a building conservative. A work of art is concerned with the future and directs us along new paths, a building is concerned with the present."
This may be a little boring for you all this week. We had to analyze the actual building for the way in which one would approach it, the existing building conditions, building codes compliance, and its sustainability characteristics. I tried to liven it up with some pretty pictures!

When you’re building an office in the Costa Rican rainforest, cooling is going to be a big concern. When that office is for a group dedicated to the environment, so is the energy used to keep temperatures down. This design offers an innovative solution: it uses physics and the heat from the sun to make the building into a natural wind tunnel, so there’s always a refreshing breeze.

WE HAVE FLOORPLANS!
So for the past few weeks I have been trying to hound down some type of architectural drawings for the building I selected for my project. Since it is for sale I thought a great place to start would be the realtor...not naming any names, they never called me back despite the amount of times I called them. Let's just say the secretaries at this say real estate office know my voice and would like me to stop calling. Despite I continued my search and found new leads through my research. I kept getting no replies though and it was very disgruntling. On the verge of losing hope a light shined through! Professor Gregory Saldana of the University of Michigan emailed me not only floor plans but a site plan, building sections, detail sections; THE WORKS! He curated an exhibit two years ago called Michigan Matters at the Taubman College and with the Michigan Archives they celebrated Michigan architecture and my lovely building, the Great Lakes Regional Reynolds Headquarters Building by Minoru Yamasaki. Hence, one happy girl over here!
This week we chose our buildings and sites for the project. We had to analyze the State or country it was located in, the city, and the actual building/site. Lastly we had to pull all of the information together into a conclusion. Things we had to focus on were LEED sites, zoning, local and state building codes, micro-climates, stakeholders, and the list goes on!

EEK! So amazing but scary at the same time!

Love these shots of Le Corbusier!
"Downtown Detroit has more vacant buildings over 10 stories than any city in the world."

I chose my building and I could not be anymore excited! It was designed by the famed Twin Towers architect Minoru Yamasaki in 1959. It is the Great Lakes Regional Reynolds Headquarters Building and it highlights it use of aluminum to show off the product to potential clients and highlight Metro Detroit as the automobile capital of the world. Its current location is in Southfield but I will be moving it via my imaginary giant crane to the corner of Schlaff St. and Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. Sorry Habib's Cuisine but I'm tearing your building down to make room for mine!
