【♞】It is not often that Christian Aldemar wakes so late in the day. How long had it been since he had slept so long? Not even a single time rises to the surface of his memory -- and what a deep and dark pool of memories it is...! Distant drops of remembrance plunk plunk plunk one by one, and that still expanse of calm water ripples infinitely in every conceivable direction...

How many years had it been since he dreamt of his mother? Of his father? Were those faces bubbling up from the depths even their own? Could he even remember the strong line of his father's jaw, the pleasant slope of his mother's cheek, the feeling of scruff against his tiny face when Father collected him into his arms, or the way Mother's mouth curved up just so at the corner when she smiled at him...?

Should this not be she, he supposes... this is how a mother ought to have looked, had he committed their features to memory.

Dark and dimly lit... but not so devoid of light. For in those six years there had been--

                                                               --Sunlight.

Just the thought of it would be enough to turn his stomach on this occasion, this time when he wakes greeted by a persistent throb in his head. Perhaps he vaguely recollects drifting in and out of wakefulness since...

Wait. Since when...? All he can remember is--

"…" Birds were often portrayed as timid, skittish little things. They fled at the sound of approaching footsteps, or in the event of sudden, loud noises. Other times, many of the avian creatures took to the skies when in the midst of another— non avian— creature’s company. Or so it was said; Nettie no longer believed in such a myth.

How could she? There certainly hadn’t been anything skittish or timid about the bird that had flown towards her, and stolen the slice of bread she had managed to obtain for lunch just that morning. 

Birds were cruel. "… Aah."

【❀】Would giggling at such a display be considered in poor taste? If only because of the face she makes when the crafty bird snatches away her food! And, of course, by that he means absolutely no discernible change in her expression at all, and it's that sort of reaction that tickles him pink. The youth casually walks up behind her and strikes up a conversation as though it were the most natural thing in all the world.

                ❝ Feeding the birds, hm~?  ❞

Mercifully, the brunt of his laughter he expended on the open air, and by the time Leere addresses his companion, he only chuckles quietly.

Venus is practically speechless as she watches him pluck the flower from the ground, brush it off with such delicacy it surprises her, and tuck it behind her ear. His touch is strong it almost sends her into a shock. How different. She never expected it. And then he spoke, explaining what he meant. It was the most she’s heard him speak. Every time they converse, he’s talking more and more. And each time…

                                               It amazes her.

A soft smile. Brown hues seem to almost relax at his words. "I think you’re very educated, Christian. And I think you understand completely." Really, he should have more faith in his intelligence. She can’t resist the crimson blush that spreads like wildfire across her fair cheeks. Instead she can only exhale in content and give Christian her gratitude.

         ”Thank you, Christian. Your opinion means the world to me.”

【♞】Were someone to witness this odd exchange, they might think it a picture of intimacy -- as if the two of them murmured soft words meant only for each other and concluded the conversation with the trading of floral tokens. And yet, how that assumption could be, in so many ways, painted a falsehood! For, despite appearances, this was little more than a clumsy attempt at expression that's gone all wrong, and Christian himself cannot even see that it was an understanding he searched for.

               ❝ My training was thorough, my lady, before I arrived here. I don't see what my education has to do with any of it.  ❞

What a quizzical look graces his features now, as if he is genuinely bewildered on the change of topic that he (wrongly) perceives. Even stranger still is the rosy bloom blossoming on the princess's face and the reason even more of a mystery. This he points out with a considerable degree of matter-of-factness.

               ❝ You might consider retiring inside, your highness. Your face is red.  ❞

                      “Hm? What could one of the Royal guard want from me?” The Admiral leaned over his desk before getting up. He slid on his uniform jacket, making sure it was proper and buttoned. “..Pardon for the look. I was rather engrossed in reports.”

Someone friendlier might reassure the Admiral about his appearance, even if the words exchanged on both sides were nothing more than mere pleasantries, but Christian says nothing on the matter.
