“If I may continue then?” Ellis gave Lucian a questioning look. Lucian simply gave a small wave. “Alright then. My family was sent here from England to be… the American connection for a family we were connected to. The Shelbys. These days they control England, you might have heard of them, you might not.” He let out a wry chuckle as he picked up his glass. “And they control us still and I’m not happy about that.”
“Do you want us to kill them while you are being baptized or something like that?” Lucian laughed at his own joke as he reached out to touch the glass Parker was twisting around her fingers.
Ellis laughed as well. “Great reference, but no. The Shelbys were punishing Michael Gray and I just don’t think we should still be under their thumb almost a century later.”
“I think that was supposed to be funny. But I’m really rather clueless.” Parker muttered and shrugged absently. She focused on the glass turning it’s heat back in on itself. Satisfied with her work she began threading the glass between Lucian’s fingers. “I can say I’ve had experience being under someone else’s thumb indefinitely.” Her eyes remained focused on her work as she continued. “So, in broad terms. What is it you and the Grays plan to do with freedom?”
“Godfather, Hot Stuff.” Lucian pressed a soft kiss to the back of her head. He watched her closely, no matter how many times he saw her tricks he was never not fascinated.
“We plan to be our own people instead of a Shelby pawn. We intend to make money how we see fit and keep that money here in this city to help this city instead of sending it back to Birmingham.” Ellis said and then finished off his drink, setting the empty glass aside.
“How charitable.” Lucian rolled his eyes at the man. “Give back to the city you take from, so nice.”
“I understand your… ire, Lucian, but there is more to what I do than that, I assure you.” Ellis rubbed the bridge of his nose. “In fact getting away from the Shelby’s would mean we could do more to protect this city and we would take those steps to be better for the city.”
“Well.” Parker paused a moment to settle the finishing touches on her work. Lucian now wore a set of brass knuckles made of glass. The sight made her grin. “I’m potentially interested. Enlighten me on what happens if your plan to emancipate yourself and your operation from Shelbys fails miserably.”
