Rupiah Bwezani Banda, the former President of Zambia who served from 2008 to 2011, died on Friday after a long battle with colon cancer.

The former president died yesterday at his residence around 19:00 hrs CAT. The president’s son Andrew Banda confirmed the news to the media and said the decased passed away at his home.

Barely a year after losing the country’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia has lost yet another father to the nation, its fourth Republican President.

SCORES KILLED IN DR CONGO TRAIN CRASH

According to rail officials and the communications ministry, the death toll in a train disaster in the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been revised upward to 75, with 125 people injured.

On Saturday, officials said on Saturday that a freight service train derailed on Thursday night, killing 60 men, women, and children and injuring 52 others.

13 GENDARMES KILLED IN NORTHERN BURKINA FASO

At least 13 gendarmes were murdered in an ambush on Sunday in Taparko, a mining town in northern Burkina Faso that is frequently targeted by Islamist fighters, according to security sources.

A number of other gendarmes were also missing, according to the source, in addition to the 13 confirmed deceased.

Another security source indicated that reinforcements had been called in and that they were searching the sector for eight gendarmes who had gone missing.

CHILD ABUSE: CAMEROON TEACHER ARRESTED FOR BRUTAL ACT ON PUPIL

Police in Cameroon have arrested a teacher after a video of him allegedly viciously abusing a nine-year-old kid surfaced online.

The attack is thought to have occurred at an elementary school in Doula, Cameroon’s commercial center.

The video has attracted a lot of attention on social media, and it has sparked a lot of outrage.

NIGER: SEVEN CHILDREN DIE IN ‘NIGERIAN AIR ATTACK’

Seven children have been murdered in Niger during a #Nigerian army air raid targeting “bandits”, a local governor and state media have said.

The governor of Niger’s Maradi area told journalists that five more people were injured in the supposedly accidental strike.

Four people were killed instantly, according to #Governor #ChaibouAboubacar, while three others died on their way to the hospital. #Nachade village was the scene of the attack, the state television said.

SIX AFRICAN COUNTRIES TO GENERATE COVID mRNA JABS- WHO

In the latest move to enhance vaccine production in the continent, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the first six African countries to get the technology needed to create mRNA vaccines.

On Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia have been chosen to increase vaccine manufacturing on the continent.

“No other occurrence like the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how relying on a few firms to offer global public goods is limited and harmful,” Tedros said during a ceremony co-hosted by the European Council, France, South Africa, and the World Health Organization.

“The greatest strategy to manage health emergencies and achieve universal health coverage in the mid-to-long term is to dramatically improve all areas’ capacity to produce the health products they require, with fair access as their primary endpoint,” he added.

TIGRAY FIGHTERS GANG-RAPED WOMEN AND GIRLS IN ETHIOPIA WAR- AMNESTY

Tigray rebels intentionally killed civilians and gang-raped scores of women and underage girls in two towns in Ethiopia’s Amhara region last year.

This was revealed on Wednesday by Amnesty International, the latest example of the horrific toll exacted by the 15-month war.

According to the rights watchdog, 30 rape survivors were interviewed — others as young as 14 — with others being victims of violence.

AT LEAST ONE PROTESTER KILLED IN SUDANESE RALLY

An independent group of doctors claims that Sudanese security forces killed a protester in the capital, Khartoum, as thousands of people went to the streets to oppose military rule and demand the release of prisoners.

Sudanese security officers used tear gas when demonstrators rallied against army chief General Abdel Fattah al- Burhan’s takeover on October 25. Demonstrators in Khartoum’s capital and Omdurman’s twin city also demanded the release of many political figures and pro-democracy activists detained as part of an anti-opposition operation.

“A male protester, whose identity is unknown, was murdered by a cartridge fired by security forces in the neck and chest while taking part in today’s anti-coup march in Khartoum city,” the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD) stated in a statement on Monday.

UGANDA LEGISLATORS SNUB SITTINGS TO PROTEST TORTURE, DETENTION

Uganda’s opposition legislators are boycotting sittings to push the government into addressing increased cases of arbitrary arrests, brutality and extra-judicial torture by security agencies.

Last week, MPs stormed out of a plenary session to show solidarity towards their supporters, some of whom have spent over a year in detention without trial.

Last Tuesday, Mathias Mpuuga, the parliamentary leader of opposition, said the MPs had jump started the process to censure Security Minister Maj-Gen Jim Muhwezi over his failure to rein in security operatives implicated in kidnappings and torture.

Libya Prime Minister Suvives Assasination attack

According to Al Arabiya TV and Al Hadath TV, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah escaped uninjured from an assassination attempt when unidentified individuals shot at his car in the capital Tripoli.

According to the Al Arabiya channel, several gunshots were fired at Dbeibah’s automobile, and the assailants managed to flee the scene.

It was a definite assassination attempt, according to a person close to him, amid heated factional bickering over control of the administration.

Dbeibah was returning home when shots were fired from another vehicle that fled, according to the source, who requested anonymity. The matter was sent to the prosecutor general for inquiry.

SPANISH MINING FIRM FINED $6M FOR GHANA EXPLOSION THAT KILLED 13

A Spanish company operating in Ghana has been slapped a $6 milion fine by the ministry of lands and Natural resources after its truck conveying explosives to a mining site exploded, resulting in the death of some 13 Ghanaians. Many more were wounded.

It is reported that the Maxam company truck was ferrying the explosives to Chiram gold mine, belonging to Maxam corps, a Madrid-based company. The truck collided with a motorcycle, causing the explosion.

Ghanaian media indicated that over 100 people sustained injuries and the village was leveled to the ground. At first, Maxam denied responsibility for the explosion and pushed it to a local contractor.

A statement released by the ministry of lands held the company responsible for the killer situation.

MORE ETHNIC VIOLENCE IN EASTERN DRC, UN WARNS

Following last week’s horrific attacks, the United Nations Human Rights Office fears that heightened tensions between Hema herders and Lendu farmers in eastern DRC will erupt into more bloodshed.

When their camp was attacked by an armed gang last week, at least 62 internally displaced members of the Hema ethnic community were killed and 38 were injured.

Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) fighters raided the Plaine Savo IDP camp in DR Congo’s Ituri province at night.

CODECO, which is primarily made up of Lendu farmers, has carried out a series of catastrophic attacks on IDP camps, the most recent of which occurred on February 1.

Liz Throssel, a spokesperson for the United Nations’ human rights office, says that all of the victims have been identified.

The competition observer for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) said a completed probe has found some airlines in the region are liable for engaging in anti-competitive practices.

The Comesa Competition Commission (CCC) began the probe this February after information that some airlines were refusing to reschedule passenger tickets at no additional charges even if the rescheduling was not a passenger’s fault.

Further accusations pointed at some airlines operating within the region refusing to compensate passengers for loss or damage of their luggage, which is contrary to the Comesa Competition regulations.

“The Commission wishes to advise the airlines operating in the region to refrain from such conduct as it is contrary to Comesa competition regulations,” the agency’s CEO Willard Mwemba said in a letter dated February 7.

13 MILLION FACING SEVERE HUNGER IN THE HORN OF AFRICA – WFP

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has said that the conditions and consequences of drought have left an estimated 13 million people facing severe hunger in the Horn of Africa.

The Horn of Africa is a large peninsula of East Africa, located on the easternmost part of the African mainland.

The UN agency has requested rapid aid to avoid humanitarian crises in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia, which is experiencing the driest circumstances since 1981.

Political Turmoil is Tunisia headed Towards Authoritarian Rule

Tunisia has been pushed into further political turmoil after President Kais Saied said he was suspending the nation’s major legal body, the Supreme Judicial Council.

According to the head of state, the judges have been biased and involved in corruption.

“Their place is not where they sit now, but where the accused stand,” Saied said referring to the council members in his speech announcing the decision.

The development is the latest in a series of moves in which critics indicate are leading the country towards authoritarian rule.

The chair of the Supreme Judicial Council dubbed the move illegal and vowed to continue working.

According to the council members, there was no legal framework to dissolve it. Its members vowed to continue holding their seats on the independent body, which was set up in 2016 in a bid to guarantee the judiciary’s independence.

Malawi to undergo SIX month Power Outage

Following the landfall of tropical storm Ana on January 24 that damaged Malawi’s Chikwawa dam, the nation’s main power station has stopped operating.

The nation bordering Zambia is expected to go through six months of power cuts, according to the national electricity company Egenco.

Over 90 people died in the storm across southern Africa
