It all started back in 2013, with the buzz around the much anticipated Django Unchained movie. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington and Samuel L Jackson, the film apparently focused on creating a black slave hero, but in my eyes and in the eyes of a few others, it failed. Instead it told the story of the black slave, who had a white messiah who helped them along to freedom, which if you have grown up in the west as I have done, has been told and re-told countless number of times.

Fast forward to the present and the current slave films on our lips are ‘The Butler’ and ’12 Years a slave’. I will start with ‘The Butler’ just to keep to a chronological order…...
