Skye glanced around, trying to not look as nervous as she felt. It’s not like it was her first mission or anything. She’s been on more than a couple, but for whatever reason, there was this feeling in her gut that something was going to go wrong. “Okay, so what’d AC say? This is just a get in, get the thing, and get out, right?” She asked, glancing over to Ward. She paused for a second. 

“What are the odds that this is going to turn into a ‘everything blows up and we’re screwed’ type of mission?”

the reason I don’t like coffee shop aus isn’t that they’re intrinsically boring, because a freaking bagel au could be amusing if approached well, but so many of them are so… peaceful… the characters love their job and have plenty of time to ponder that one attractive stranger that comes in a lot. Listen. This is retail. Person A and person B’s fated meeting is cut short when a pissed off middle-aged lady pushes herself between their eye contact and shrieks at A about how she wants to use a 2-years-old coupon. Someone shat on the bathroom ceiling. There’s a random sanitary inspection. B knows full well the bagel they just sold to the guy who is always rude fell on the floor three hours ago. A and B have their first real heart-to-heart at 11 pm while on their knees and scrubbing the floor. Where are my #realistic coffee shop au deconstructions, sanitized, idealistic portrayals of retail are soothing but setting revisionism cannot fight off the all-engulfing darkness when a customer hands you a 100$ bill at 8 am to pay for a 1.95$ item

       Jemma shook her head, letting out a soft chuckle as she watched Daisy’s reaction. “Okay, I can’t say that doesn’t sound like a bad idea.Why do I have a gut feeling that I’m going to be keeping an eye on everyone?” She teased as she stood up, deep down Jemma knew that a break was needed, yet she was still nervous to be surround by a crowd of strangers. “Daisy, no wonder why he agreed to let us go, he knows I won’t let you do anything that land us into trouble.”

“You won’t have to keep an eye on everyone! I’m going to have two drinks, tops.” Okay, maybe a couple more than that, but Jemma didn’t really need to know about that. “I don’t know about that. I distinctly remember you and I hacking into SHIELD and you taking out a high ranking agent just so we could get some intel on Fitz and - “ She cut herself off, the laughter in her voice dying a little as she thought back to that day and Ward. “Fitz,” she finished lamely. “But I think we’ll manage to stay mostly out of trouble.” There was a pause.

“I think.”

Sure, she likes where she stands now, her new life where she’s more than a spy, more than what Steve had called Fury’s janitor (the insult grates on her, like it had been her he’d had a problem with; maybe it had been). But it’s still nice to see that some team has been put back together, even if it’s not her own.

Daisy has seen a lot ever since SHIELD had fallen. She’s even met some of the Avengers. But there is something about Romanoff that has her a little starstruck. She was surprised that she was able to joke around with the woman who could probably kill her with her pinky. 

“But I mean, even if it did date you, I wouldn’t say anything. My lips are sealed.”

Fitz sighed, clenching his fingers into a fist before slowly flexing them out. He knew that Daisy wouldn’t be straight with him. Well, he should have know better anyway. But he still couldn’t help but try and then when he did finally confront her it just turned into a staring contest. At least until she demanded he talk… 

“Is ‘I’m fine’ Daisy code for ‘really not all that fine at all’?” He asked, lowering his head so that he was looking up at her with a pointed stare.

“We’ve been working together long enough that you should already know that answer,” she said, her voice low and even after she’d hesitated to answer. She settled her hip against the countertop, crossing her arms as she watched him. 

“Look, it’s just - hard, okay?” She looked away from him, the words almost getting caught in her throat. “It’s hard to hold it all together when it’s like everything is falling apart. It’s a miracle we’ve stayed a team this long.” There was a pause. “Not counting Ward.”
