Proof 'Searching For Jerry Garcia'
Proof is a detroit rapper who's known for being Eminem's best friend and member of D12 before his passing in 2006, while recording his solo debut Proof found inspiration from rockstar Jerry Garcia. This was the best underground rap album of 2005 with so many iconic rappers: d12, 50 cent, method man, obie trice, nate dogg, b-real.
The opening song clap wit me has a catchy beat with clever wordplay and proof rapping about his life is detroit and d12 gives the listeners the idea what we about to hear on the album. Forgive Me has a sad vibe talking about his fucked up life praying and begging forgiveness just to struggle to survive and remain ontop and how his life has been a search for serenity all along, struggling to overcome a troubled past with the hook from 50 cent with a calm tone in his voice.
There's alot of fun tracks to bop your head to like pimplikeness a funny song about being a pimp with funny bars from eminem amd bizarre. And a chill song High Rollers about smoking weed with a fun melody. Proof raspy gruff voice can set the mood when he rapping about his troubled life to his thug ways, no matter what tone the song makes it very hardhitting. Also he's serious about his craft and pouring his heart and soul into it to make you a believer.
The one flaw with Proof is even though he's a serious artist, there are mellow songs on searching for jerry garcia that you can believe he'll unwind now and then even if it takes a lil help to relax. I get that he made it to take a break from the rest of the tracks of the other hyped songs but it doesn't sound very laid back from his voice.
The closing track kurt kobain is a very haunting depressing song of his life and beg forgiveness to his loved ones wishing he can take it back but its too late with the ending of a skit pulling the trigger to his head ending with a deep and somber note.
The fans seem to only care about eminem from d12 but its a breath of fresh air for an artist finally starting to emerge from em's shadow and showing us his full potential. The topics in the album are basic at times like the pimp and weed songs but at least he did something different and i take those songs over any generic rap song from the early 2000s. He tackled hard subjects and i still to this day enjoy it from beginning to end without it sounding outdated, rest in peace Proof.
