Deserter

Ben didn’t have a chance to say a single word before Stela shut the door on him.
“Thank you…?” He said softly after a few seconds, shrugging before setting his pack down and dropping into the chair. Nothing about the room or its furniture screamed “comfort” to him, but he hadn’t expected even this much. He suspected that if Stela’s colleagues had any say in the matter, he’d be sitting on the ground in a dark, dank corner somewhere with guards ready to open fire on him immediately.
Ben’s stomach growled and he fought back the hunger pangs while inwardly cursing for letting his stolen rations run out. He eventually deciding to get some sleep so he wouldn’t be able to think about his desire for food.
He moved to the cot, kicked off his boots, and lay down, hoping that whatever he would dream about was not worse than his current situation.
"Kriffing assholes," Stela muttered to herself, absentmindedly stirring the bowl of too watery soup. Unsurprisingly, no one was happy about her decision. Of course, no one was willing to argue with her on it, either. At the end of the day, as much as they thought this whole thing was a mistake that would wind up getting them all killed, none of them thought it strongly enough to not trust her instincts.
"Dinner time," she said, opening the door. "Sorry it's shit; we're working with what we've go-" she stopped when she saw that he was asleep, pausing in the doorway before shutting it as quietly as she could manage, setting the tray down near the cot, and sitting down in the chair to wait. Part of her considered waking him, she did still have to question him, after all, but it was a small downtime she didn't normally have. And, if he was telling the truth, he was probably tired. Probably needed, and deserved, the rest.
