In the Jedi Quest series, everything fell apart when all three Padawans betrayed themselves. Tru chose to lie, Ferus chose to break the rules, Anakin chose non-intervention and distrust. As a result, Darra died—the girl who could have become a nagging mediator, the girl who knew Anakin's tender and honest side better than boys, the girl who, in theory, could have held everything together.

We can't forget the impact of Korriban on the characters.

I think Jude Watson explores the dark side brilliantly in her books. This particular situation once again emphasizes that the dark side isn't just about evil and emotions. The dark side is about concealment, doubt, lies. About straying from the pure and straight path you've chosen.

That's why I don't like the romanticization of the dark side. A Sith isn't just a warrior who uses emotions as a weapon. A Sith is a deeply lost person, losing more and more awareness and self-awareness every day.

This is why everything went wrong — padawans were too young and inexperienced to understand the more hidden manifestation of the dark side and to confront it correctly. None of the boys was ready to become a Jedi knight. Maybe Darra was.
