Gohan and Future Trunks should have been the next generation to lead after Goku and Vegeta died. Goku had an amazing send off at the end of the Cell Saga when he passed the torch onto Gohan. The story could’ve continued the same as they headed into the Buu Saga... except Vegeta could’ve played like a mentor-ish role because Vegeta has much more battle experience & he already got on Gohans ass since he hasn’t trained in 7 years post Goku’s death. & let’s not act like Vegeta had an amazing send off during his fight with Buu where he blew himself up in hopes of defeating Buu, of course it didn’t work but it was great character development compared where he was at in the beginning of the series.

You could’ve tied Future Trunks into the “main” story by having the androids actually kill his mother ( Future Bulma ) and just have that timeline be ruined. If you forgot Future Trunks’ timeline is the original timeline in which all the Z-Fighters + friends actually lose and die as a result. WIth nowhere to go Bulma takes him in hes now a part of the main cast since his timeline no longer exists.

This was not formatted nor worded correctly but tldr: Goku & Vegeta die then you switch over to their sons Gohan & Future Trunks taking up the leading roles for the next generation after them: Goten, Trunks, Pan, Bulla, Uub. & possibly Marron. it would’ve been bitter sweet because ( before Broly & Universe 6 became canon ) the “pure” saiyan race would’ve died out with Goku and Vegeta, thus creating a brand new generation of Hybrid Saiyans.

I mean think about it: Frieza Kills 99% of the saiyan race, Cell kills one of the last remaining saiyan and Buu finishes off the other.
