âIâm Claire, Claire Carter.â She grinned at him, fluffy brown curls bouncing a little as she held her hand out. -agentclairecarter (hi! Hope this is ok.)
âHello..â He narrowed his eyes and gave a small smirk. âCarter huh? Any relation to Peggy?â
âMy aunt,â she scuffed a hand through her curls, suddenly conscious of her brown skin. âMy Dad was black, you know, before you ask and all.â
âYou look as beautiful as your aunt. Even more can I add. I bet you have the kick ass attitude too right?â
âIt seems to be a family trait,â she grinned, crossing her arms over her chest. âWhat about you? Can you kick ass?â
He smirked. âIâm slightly hurt that your aunt didnât tell you about me. Iâve been known to kick a few asses in my time.â
Claire rolled her eyes at him. âMy aunt preferred to teach me how rather than just telling me stories.â

âYou know, ainât like Iâm still five years old, you know? Ainât like Iâm gonna be sitting every night asking my mom âwhenâs daddy coming home?â You know? Who needs him?â
âHey baby, I noticed you noticing me and I just wanted to put you on notice that I noticed you too.â
âCould you drop me off at the beach?â
âOh my God, ___! Whatâs that hideous thing growing out of your neck? Ah, never mind. Itâs just your head.â

âMaybe I sometimes say things that are selfish and self-centered, but thatâs who I am, dammit.â

Steve noticing something weird about SamâŠa nervous tick that he gets whenever heâs in the vicinity of police. Steve doesnât get it for a while, Sam has a beyond spotless record, hell, even Laura Barton had a wilder youth. But itâs definitelyly a tick. Sam freezes, puts his hands slightly forward and spreads his fingers, tilting his head down. Itâs a very natural, casual looking walk, except his face clouds over into a blank mask. It happens so quickly, rolling away like a cloud when theyâre fifty yards past that Steve isnât sure that even Sam knows heâs doing it. It even happens after public missions, when police come to aid cleanup. Sam tends to stick around the fire rescue or paramedics. Once a pair of officers approached him and Sam looked ready to fly right back out for a split second before he caught himself and gave his statement.
Steve is trying to think it through over drinks with Nick when the director just shakes his head, âItâs a form of ptsdâ
âThere really arenât a ton of American police in Afghanistan,â Steve says irritated.
âYea, but there are in Harlem. You ever read a police blotter? They donât publicize one tenth of the shit that really goes down there. Thereâs a 300% chance he saw a lot of bad shit going down and it wasnât always headed by the so called bad guys. Your man had ptsd before he joined up,â Nick finished his whiskey in a single gulp and gestured for another, âWe all didâ

âI wouldnât know.â Claire stared at the underside of the small overhanging roof. âI never really had home.â She glanced at the proffered keys. Claire took a moment to weigh the idea. She wanted to leave. To get away from the painful piece of her past currently sitting in her brotherâs family home.Â
But that would be selfish.
âNo.â She finally said. âYour family is here and you deserve to see them. Itâs not a big deal. Iâm sorry for the knife in the floor too, I was just acting on a stupid instinct.â Claire played with her fingers, dragging her thumbnail under the curve of her middleâs. âIâm guessing you have some questions too.â Claire wasnât an idiot and she knew her brother well. He was no doubt curious about what the hell just went down in his familyâs foyer.Â
~Sean POV~
âUgh,â Sean grunted as he rolled over and sat up. Man did Carter pack a fucking punch these days. Glancing up at the surrounding Toretto family, he sighed.Â
âIâm in trouble, arenât I?â He asked.Â
âI never really had a home.â Brian let the words linger in the air a little longer. It was like Claire and Brian were two pods from the same tree. Because whatever she was going through or had to deal with and conquer, Brian could practically say the same about himself. He knew how to relate. And it was probably the reason why they worked so well with each other. âThen maybe we should change that. No. We need to change that.â He emphasized as he chose his words carefully. âWhat do you wanna define as âhomeâ?â
The last thing he wanted to do was create anymore tension. There was already enough of that. âNot a big deal? Depends on who youâre asking. The offer still stands.â He continued to hold out the keys. But his mind wondered. Even when he didnât want it too. It still did. Which meant curiosity was sinking in. But he also didnât want to force her to talk about anything right now either. She was already dealing with enough problems. It didnât help she had to add one more thing to those problems. âInstinct or not, it gives everyone the very idea that you donât take shit from no one. Thatâs commendable among us. Because you shouldnât. This is your life. You live it as you choose to live it.â
He drew out a breath as his eyes wondered off into the distance again. âButâŠconsidering what actually did happen in there? Yes.â He paused as he returned his gaze to her. There was a bit of sternness in his voice. âI have questions. What the hell was that about?â
-*-
Meanwhile, beyond the front door in the foyer, there was an awkward silence among the occupants. If there wasnât a stiff and intimidating stance on the older Toretto beforehand, there was one now. But Dom was also a man of little words, chose them rather wisely and always expected his actions to speak more for him. It was hard to know what he was thinking.Â
âTrouble? More like had your balls handed to you on a silver platter with an extra side of ass whooping.â Roman was the first to break the silence. And he was doing his level best not to laugh out loud, but his tone said otherwise. He stifled his chuckling considering the grim look on Domâs face. âYou lucky your hand is still intact.â Roman quickly added before disappearing back into the living room.Â
At a time like this, it was definitely best to keep comments to themselves. Tej and Jimmy followed after Roman knowing it was one conversation they didnât need to be directly involved with. Even if curiosity sunk in from all parties who witnessed what had just gone down. Letty moved slowly towards Dom, hoping to maintain some level of calm. It was hard to tell when the bald man could burst into a violent outburst or verbal backlash. Or even if he would at all.
âPick your words wisely, Boswell. You wanna tell me what thatâs all about?â Dom advised as he crossed his arms over his chest. He was expecting to get those answers quickly, too.
âWe need to change that.â
Claire swallowed hard at her brotherâs words, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. âI donât want to feel like Iâm lying,â she finally settled on, the words forcing their way through the thickness in her throat. âEven in New York, with my mom, I feel like Iâm lying, playing a character that she wants to see. When Iâm home, I donât want to feel like that.âÂ
She glanced at the keys and shook her head again. Once again, Claire was following her family creed when she didnât need to. Duty above all else wasnât something that needed to be applied to things like this. If she hadnât had that pressed so firmly into her, she would have taken the keys. Bur it was and she didnât.Â
âWe met before, he was in my class in eighth grade.â Claire swallowed again. âIt was the last day of school, so the school held a dance. My mom even took time off to take me shopping for a dress. It was blue.â Why she felt the need to add that detail, Claire didnât know, but she did. âHe was popular I guess. He had friends. And I... I was this chubby black girl with frizzy hair and braces and no friends. I had a stupid crush on him and he didnât even know I existed. But at the dance, I found some courage and I asked him if he wanted to dance.â Claire sniffle and wiped her nose as she told him everything. âHe laughed in my face and dumped punch on my dress. He called me a few names, of the racial variety, and I ran out in tears. Called my mom and asked her to come get me. I never saw him again until now.âÂ
She huffed the tiniest of dry laughs. âThat same night I was recruited into SHIELD. And I have no regrets about that.âÂ
~*~
âI noticed,â Sean muttered, rolling his sore shoulder. Not only could Claire punch his lights out with clear ease if she wanted, she almost popped his shoulder out of itâs socket while wearing heels and a skirt. If he hadnât been impressed before, he was now.Â
âI was a stupid fourteen year old,â Sean summed it up. âI was trying to fit in at a school I was going to be leaving and I humiliated a girl for no reason and Iâve regretted it ever since. I called her a few slurs, I dumped punch on her dress, and I laughed in her face when she asked me to dance.â Sean swallowed hard and bowed his head, not exactly quailing under the Toretto patriarch's firm look but not standing up to it either. âI was stupid and racist and a total jackass to a girl who had been nothing but sweet to me anytime we talked. Iâve regretted it since the second it happened and I want to apologize but she ran off and I moved two days later.âÂ
Sean flexed his hand and pulled the knife from the floor. âIf you want me to leave, Iâll leave, just let me call Han and get a ride back to Tokyo first.âÂ
agentclairecarter:
âI know.â Her response was muffled by the fact that she had buried her face in his shirt. âBut donât forget, youâre stuck with me too. This-â their partnership â-ainât ending until you retire or I become Director of SHIELD.â Claire had goals and the main one was to be Director of SHIELD by the time she was 35. She pulled back and swiped a stray curl from her face. âYou wanna go for a drive?â She asked, knowing his answer already. âWeâre already halfway to Montauk. We could go there.â The base they were at was on the road to the small town and it had been awhile since Claire had been there. Not since she was ten actually.
âSoâŠwhat if I decide to retire next week?â It was a joke of course. He wasnt going to. Because whether it was a selfish addiction or not to be pulled into the adrenaline rush of being a SHIELD agent, he concluded none of this would have came to be without making it clear why he signed on in the first place. Family. To protect what meant the most to him. And now Claire was part of that circle, unintentional or not. âAre you sure you want that kind of responsibility? Wishful thinking and all, good luck trying to get Fury to retire himself. Sounds like heâll be around until his final breath.â He also teased at the notion of her wanting to become the director of SHIELD. Of course being out in New York meant taking in the sights. Of the entire state if need be. There was a lot to see and explore, much like California. âIs this one of those daytime trips being a tourist?â He cocked an eyebrow as he laughed.
âThen Iâll kick your ass until you un-retire!â Claire threatened, not so jokingly. âWeâve got at least a good ten years left until you need to get out. Iâm not letting you leave after barely a year!â Her brother was stuck with her for awhile and she wasnât gonna let him walk out of her life so easily. âI know I can do it. I didnât make that wish lightly.â Claire knew full well how stressful being the director could be, but she was determined to keep Furyâs work preserved. He was the first African-American director, Claire would be the second as well as the first female of color to hold the position. It was a matter of determination to keep the position in the hands of those that many would dismiss as being unable or unqualified to do it. SHIELD was at the height of itâs power under Fury and would advance further under hers. She would make sure of it. âYeah,â she grinned. âJust us having some time at the beach like normal brothers and sisters do. Please?âÂ
therealoconner: âIâm not apologizing for what I said to that asshole⊠He was saying terrible things about you. I meant it when I said I would protect you.âÂ
@agentclairecarter : continued from here
âThanks bro.â Claire mumbled, trying to give her older brother a smile. âI appreciate it.â She leaned up and kissed his cheek. âLove you. Lots. Think we can go get some ice cream now?â
Not that she needed the protection, but Brian also couldnât let those comments and remarks slide so easily either: about her skin color, her gender and even her cultural roots. Brian knew how to fight back. Donât ever taunt him. It was a respect thing. And too many people these days no longer gave it. But it wasnât like the other guy even had a clue he was going up against a former cop either. The verbal altercation quickly turned into a physical one. And even if the other guy had more muscle strength than Brian (a few blows to the jaw and an attempted chokehold left Brian winded), it didnât take long before the rude and ignorant man was pinned to the ground begging for mercy. âI donât care who the hell you think you are. You donât disrespect a woman! Ever. Especially one who could actually instill more levels of pain than I am right now.â Plus the guy had the nerve to pull a knife on Brian too. So he had to defend himself and disarm his aggressor quickly and efficiently.
Brian ran a hand over his jaw and frowned. Even if his jaw wasnât made of glass, he was sure a bruise would form soon. His mind wondered back to the fight he had moments ago. He let the guy go. And run off in an embarrassing heap. Thatâs all he could do. Donât make too much of a scene of everything already. He didnât need to explain more than he needed to. He looked over at Claire and pushed open a soft smile. âYeah. Letâs go get some ice cream.â Considering that was their mission in the first place before the fight even happened. âAnd if anyone asks, this never happened.â
Claire had passively watched her brother attack the other agent, a warm feeling in her thin chest. Her trainer had never done that before, nor had any of her previous (and extremely brief) partners. âCourse not. What are we talking about?â She asked, a faux blankness in her voice.Â
The knife she kept in her pocket (a gift from someone she had yet to confess even to Brian) suddenly felt heavy.Â
âUse it right.âÂ
Probably not what he meant. Claire swallowed hard and followed her brother out to the garage. âSo thereâs three joints thatâre actually good and reasonably priced in half a mile. Or we could try some shitty, over priced tourist ice cream. Your choice. Either way, Iâm getting cookies and cream.âÂ
therealoconner: âHoly shitâdid you do that?!â@
@agentclairecarter : continued from here
âUh⊠Maybe? In my defense, he did attack me first and he was totally asking for it.â
Not that Brian could expect otherwise from her. If anyone were to push her over they were in a world of hurt. Simple as that. Which wasnât a bad thing. Even he knew when to back-off and no longer test her patience (most of the time). But Brian has also come to learn and appreciate the strong-willed and independent females in his life. They were much better company than the damsels-in-distress types that littered his teen years. âUm, Iâm sure he did. So what did he do exactly to end up in that position?â His curiosity sunk in.
Claire pressed her lips together before leaning up and whispering what the other agent had said to her in his ear. âSo before he could say anything else, I, well, yeah.â She rocked back on her heels and gestured at the twitching and bleeding agent. Her knuckles were red and scraped, a bit of blood (likely her own) decorated her brown flesh. âSo he didnât like, hit me or anything, I just didnât want him to think he could get away with saying stuff like that to me. My sexuality isnât a fetish and neither is my race and Iâm not letting anyone get away with thinking that.â Claire crossed her arms and nodded firmly. âSo, wanna go get ice cream?âÂ
therealoconner: đŹÂ
@agentclairecarter : continued from here
âDonât you fucking dare try and say shit,â Claire warned him. âYouâve done this too.â She sucked in another breath of the smoke, hands shaking slightly. âBesides, this is only my first pack.â
Brian pressed his lips together. He didnât say anything right away. It would be wrong for him to tell her otherwise. To be a hypocrite. Ya know, those typical words of warning: smokingâs bad for you. Heâs done it too. Had a bad habit of smoking a lot as a teen and rookie cop. He kicked the habit years ago. But in reality, under very high levels of stress and anxiety, Brian was known to pick up a cigarette or two to calm down. (He does vape too, yes. But not as much as others do) A frown formed on his lips before he drew a breath out. âIf I did, wouldnât it make me a hypocrite? Youâre old enough to make your own choices and decisions, Claire.â He said simply. ââŠand first as in ever? Or for today?â He paused realizing this is the first time he ever saw a cigarette in her hand. Unless he was that naive not to notice in the past. âAnd donât tell me you took it up âcuz of peer pressure. Or you think itâs cool. I just hope this doesnât turn into an addictive habit is all.â
âEver.â Claire swallowed hard as she shifted her weight. âA boy at school offered me one during lunch. I gave him six bucks and took the whole pack after threatening to tell the principal if he didnât give me the pack.â She took another inhale. It taste disgusting but the nicotine in it hit her system in just the right way that she could relax a little. Her hands were shaking so bad that she finally dropped the cigarette and stomped on it. âI feel like Iâm falling apart,â she whispered, knowing that her brother would hear it. âHow do I make it stop?âÂ
agentclairecarter:
Claire rolled her eyes at him and punched his shoulder. âBro, you can barely stand a winter in New York,â she reminded him. âYou definitely ainât gonna last long in Alaska.â Claire would readily admit her status as an utter summer child, but she had lived in New York City her whole life, giving her a full four seasons. Brian had grown up in California however, he hadnât had four full seasons until recently. Sheâd reserve the tickets for a cruise next time she had wifi.
~*~
âAre either of you Roman Pierce or Brian OâConner?â Claire did her level best to look cool and collected. But she was still small and nervous, the fourteen year old so new to this job. âMy name is Clarissa Carter, Iâm here to offer you a job.â
~*~
âThank god,â Claire agreed as she gave her brother a fond smile. âIâdâve been paired with that asshole Johnson if you hadnât.â And lord knows that would have been a disaster. âI know,â she sighed. âBut itâs worth a shot. And at the very least, weâll alert them to any cops trying to slide under their radar and join them. Hopefully, thatâll curry a little favor towards SHIELD as a whole.â Claire wasnât sure how that idea would go but you never know unless you try after all.
âOh my god!â Claire groaned and thumped her head against the headrest. âMust you be such a brother?â
Brian frowned as he felt a tinge of cold race down his spine. The thought of winter weather in NYC made Brian shiver again. He frowned and looked over at her. âBut NYC winters are bitter cold. With little to no sun surrounded by a concrete jungle. At least Alaska gives you a better connection to nature. Itâll give us an excuse to shut off the world for awhile, ya know.â He was definitely a city boy, but that didnât mean he didnât love to explore the outdoors. When it didnât require working on a mission that is. And call it kryptonite or not, an ocean front will always be his weak spot (next to the cars).
-*-
The two men exchanged a look of confusion. But Roman was the first to say something. âMaybe. That depends on whoâs asking. And what kind of job? Does it pay good?â Because leave it to Roman to bring up a monetary value in almost any conversation you had with him. He wanted the high class luxury living so let the guy dream about his fantasies.
However, Brian was a little more logical. And even suspicious about her proposition. But even he had a natural tendency of curiosity that he couldnât pass up either. She somehow knew them by name already so she must have heard something about them. The question is what exactly did she know about them? And how did she obtain it? âWhat offer?â Brian asked cautiously.
-*-
Brian made a face and shook his head. âNever liked Johnson. Call it a long shot, but every time I see him, he just gives me bad vibes. Like something ainât right about him.â Johnson and several other agents gave Brian bad vibes though. Like there was some hidden agenda or something that made those agents untrustworthy in Brianâs book. And testing his loyalty was a road not many people wanted to take.
He pressed his lips together and shrugged before reaching over to push her shoulder again. âYup. Admit it, youâd be lost without the watchful eye of your brothers. So be thankful you havenât gotten into even crazier shit without me or Roman around.â
âBro, they donât get much sunlight either,â she reminded him. âLand of the Midnight Sun and Sunless Winter. I mean, if you really wanna go drown in snow then ok but Iâm gonna laugh.â Claire had briefly stopped in Alaska at one point; it hadnât been very impressive but it hadnât been awful. Good food though.Â
~*~
âSHIELD. Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division,â Claire rattled off in one breath. âWe want to hire you for your driving abilities. And yes, the pay is good.âÂ
âYour driving skills are exceptional, both of you are easily some of the best drivers around on the street racing scene. SHIELD wants to hire you for that.â Claire followed the script she had been given for just that question. âYouâd both be well paid to assist agents in getting out of bad situations with fast driving. Ten agents have died in the past month due to unskilled drivers. Neither of you have gotten into deadly car accidents, weâre hoping that you will not only drive agents, but also teach others how to drive like you.âÂ
~*~
âLets be real, no one likes Johnson,â Claire remarked. Claire very much disliked Johnson, mostly on principle due to the fact that he disparaged younger agents so much. She personally wanted to drop kick him out the windows a lot.Â
She rocked with the shove, making a face at him. âJerk. Iâd be just fine! A little lonely, but still alive. Besides, I managed just fine for six months before you came along.âÂ
