âIf youâre a military man, Corporal, you and I both know this isnât your first experience with bureaucracy. It donât count until youâve said it six times and written it down about ten.â Jim wished that was an exaggeration, but it got worse all the time. Computers hadnât helped, either. If he heard the word âpaperlessâ one more time that might be when he really lost it, mostly because all those âpaperlessâ upgrades came with a whole new stack ofâŚpapers. Every damn time. âSo go through it with me one more time. From the top. And Iâll try to get you out of here.â
Flash leaned back in his seat with a huff. âi just want to go home,â he said, folding his arms over his chest. He sighed. âIt was around 9 p.m. and I was leaving the VA over on Sheffield after work. I didnât see anything when I was leaving, but when I got out onto the street, I heard a gunshot and saw someone running south on Sheffield. When I went to find out what happened I found a dead body.â He dropped his hands into his lap. âI donât remember exactly what the shooter was wearing, but he was about 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, and I think he was white. He was wearing a hat for sure, though, so itâs hard to know.â
