Summary:
It seems laughable now to think that he could ever have been destined for more than this. From a boy so lucky to be alive they gave him a lofty title to match, to the supposed savior of humanity, to tawdry spoils of the very war he lost. It is a new kind of bravery Harry must hold onto these days, if he is to get through this with any of his sanity or self-respect left intact.
He won’t just give up on living though, on hope. Somebody has to be here, after all, to take care of the girl, so if not for himself, then he’ll at least do it for her. He can suffer any indignity thrown his way if it means that just one child born into this endless, bitter cycle of longing and loathing will grow up loved.
Sometimes, a ray of sunshine will break through the storm clouds even when it’s always raining.
I'm foaming at the mouth in anticipation but also this chapter of Fortells Only Rain was so good and emotional and I'm just !!!!! about it!

It is a new kind of bravery Harry must hold onto these days, if he is to get through this with any of his sanity or self-respect left intact.
He won't just give up on living though, on hope. Somebody has to be here, after all, to take care of the girl, so if not for himself, then he'll at least do it for her. He can suffer any indignity thrown his way if it means that just one child born into this endless, bitter cycle of longing and loathing will grow up loved.

The fic I really want to share is Under the Dreaming Dark (as well as its 3k one-shot "prequel"/prologue: In the Belly of the Serpent). I affectionately refer to this one as my "Silent Hill AU" but you don't need to have played any of the games or watched the movie to understand it as it's really more that it was inspired by the series rather than it being a true crossover. I think the fact that it seems like it's tied in with another somewhat niche IP may be what's keeping it from getting as much traction as some of my other tomarrymort fics, but who knows 🤔
What I love most about this fic is its rather unusual worldbuilding. This is a horror story where the setting itself is the Wizarding World...or rather, what's left of it after a mysterious event catapults every witch, wizard, and magical being on earth into a mysterious foggy land beyond the Veil where strange creatures roam and many of the friendlier magical beasts we once knew are...perhaps not so friendly anymore.
Harry stumbles upon this world shortly after his mother passes away, unaware yet that he's a wizard himself, when he encounters a rather odd but seemingly helpful older man named Tom Riddle. 😉 Here's a snippet from the chapter that just went up today:
“These are from some of Hogwarts’ final years as a school,” Tom informs him, something a bit sad and wistful in his tone while his finger idly traces the calligraphic ‘H’ of that fancy emblem a few times.
“For a time it seemed as though Hogwarts would continue to stand as one of the last great bastions of civilization and learning, even as the world all around us crumbled and fell apart, but the castle, it…it gradually changed, over the intervening years after the Fall,” he begins to explain haltingly. “So slowly at first that we almost couldn’t tell. It was only upon suddenly finding yourself alone without warning somewhere within its many winding corridors that a sort of…uneasiness would settle deep into your bones. You’d look up, and this once familiar hallway that you know you’ve walked a thousand times before would just seem alien and wrong somehow, even though you couldn’t put your finger on why it felt different all of a sudden.”
Tom has such a faraway look in his eyes now as he describes it, like that of a sleepwalker stumbling dazedly through a half-remembered dream. It’s a familiar look that Harry has seen before, in eyes that were once the same shade of green as his own, and that recognition scares him so badly that he quickly grabs Tom’s hand and squeezes it.
