Zack is very much a mainstay at his Ranch. Naturally, he's welcome any time of day or night -- for as long as he likes. Even if the female Chocobos seem to descend on him en masse each and every single time.
Mikas Lovekyn was the really only well-known Albino Chocobo Breeder. He takes a great amount of pride in this fact – he grows their food – he also administers one-on-one care. This is merely a small sample of his devotion to the birds. His Ranch is slightly detached from the main land. Offering plenty of wide-open space and sunshine for the Chocobos to roam around in. There is a bit of a lengthy bridge to cross to come upon the place, but it’s a worth-while journey. With sparkling blue seas and the very atmosphere of peace and calm.
The want of Albino Chocobos was not very high; as they’re considered to have poor genes. He raises them to increase the population of them – always having found this variety to be extremely lovely. Thinking they’ll be discovered in the same way. He is a loving Breeder and Farmer and it shows. Through all his work his dedication. Some of them he releases into the wild, others – remain with him. He will only sell them if he sees they will go into the hands of someone that will treat them as he has. Upon one of his journeys – he had sadly come upon a horrible sight.
A female Albino Chocobo. Someone, most likely her former owner – had attempted to drown her. She lay half-in a small pool of water, just enough to do the job. A mixture of rage and sorrow flooded through him. Before he does what he can to free her lungs of water and then, with a slight bit of coaxing – gets her to follow him back to the Ranch.
He will set about other tasks, bathing her, grooming her, feeding her by hand. Making sure she is comfortable. He’ll let out a soft chuckle as she thankfully bumps him under the chin with her head. Stroking his fingers through now-soft feathers. He offers up a reassuring ‘Kweh’ and when he’s sure she is resting and at-ease, will go about getting ready for feeding time.
Slowly looking back over his shoulder at Mikas, a crooked little smile pulls over his lips, an eyebrow cocking upwards. “You think I’m attractive, hm?” Of course he had to say something, bring light to the situation. Zack thought Mikas was absolutely gorgeous, if that hadn’t been apparent when he was eyeing him before.
Mikas clears his throat roughly. Caught. Busted. “Yes, I do.” He’s not blind – after all. He had caught the way Zack had been looking at him, though he hadn’t said anything about it.
That particular wing lowers down as Mikas’ attentions draw a groan from Zack. Oh god did it ever feel good to have fingers running through and along his feathers. However, he can’t help but notice the line up of female chocobos cooing at him. “Um, Mikas? Are the females in season or something?” It really wouldn’t be all that strange for them to be attracted to him, what with all these feathers.
The farmer hadn’t noticed the female Chocobos that had been surrounding Zack and cooing away – but now that he did spot them – he did now seem to understand why. “Some of them might be, but you are part bird, and you’re… quite attractive. They’ve got good taste.” His fingers get caught in the tangle for a moment, but he tries to push past what he just admitted.
The moment those fingers run through his feathers, a lovely little shiver runs down his spine. “Cloud was right. You are good with your hands.” His words are a soft little coo as he looks back over a shoulder at Mikas. Zack really can’t help it, even if he wanted to, but his feathers only puff up more at the attention.
“I do have an awful lot of experience with feathers.” Considering the obvious. Not to mention he grooms all of his Chocobos with his own two hands – guest Chocobos, like Lily – are always first. It’s only polite. Mikas is working on a particularly large clump of feathers right at the very arch of one wing.
After the handshake, Zack tips his head to one side with a smile. "So do you think you can help me out with a simple routine?" He gave his wings one more stretch. "I can't reach all my feathers to preen them and --" He turned to show off the backs of his wings. "They start to get ratty looking."
Always one to want to help others – Mikas is not about to turn Zack away – and he’s delighted to help in any way he can. “I can see that. I’d be more than happy to lend a hand. Or two.” Nimble fingers card through the incredibly soft and fluffy feathers. Untangling as he goes, ever a tender touch was this one.
"Indeed I was." That large grin of him nearly overcomes the rest of his face, reaching a clawed hand out to the farmer. "I'm Zack. I know Cloud, and he has nothing but good things to say about you~" Zack stretches those lovely wings out behind himself, clearly showing off.
Mikas hesitates – if only to admire those wings one more time – and then he encases Zack’s hand with his own. The warmth emanating there is much like his eyes and smile, all over kind. That’s Mikas for you. “Very nice to meet you Zack.” And there might be a little bit of heat along the shells of his ears at hearing Cloud’s been praising him.
His black and white feathers immediately poof out, bright blue eyes lingering down the farmer's body. "Master of avians, hm?" A single black eyebrow perks up. "I was so hoping you would say that~" His words are a deep rumble in his chest as his eyes finally manage their way back to focus on Mikas' face.
There’s a curious side to the farmer, naturally so – that wonders just how soft those feathers would feel under the brush of his fingertips. The temptation to do this without permission, just to satisfy that swelling urge was almost overwhelming – but he pushed it back and tongue wetting his lower lip, he couldn’t help the light tremor that worked down his back at the rumble coming off of Zack. “Were you?”
Zack didn't bother to hide his natural, monstery look - having a feeling that the chocobo farmer wouldn't be so put off by it. The man was out in one of the fields, picking greens. The raven-haired man leans on the fence and calls out. "Hey you! Mikas is it? Cloud told me you were good with birds~"
Mikas was plucking up fresh greens from the soil – at the moment he was dressed in nothing more than a pair of jeans that hung low on his hips and boots. He had been wearing a shirt earlier, but the warmth of the sun and the toil of his work saw fit to make him lose it a few hours back. At his name being called – he straightens and places his latest bushel of greens in the basket nearby. Glancing in Zack’s direction and noticing that a few of the female Chocobos were watching him. Dusting off his glove-covered hands, he would approach. “I’m the Master of Avians… I suppose.” He’s being modest.
Cloud blinked rapidly for a moment before looking over at Mikas, a small smile appearing over his lips. “I suppose I forget how much it affects me when she’s like this.” Running a hand through his hair, a few blonde spikes pop up defiantly. “But I already feel a little better having her here. You’re always so great with all the birds. I can never thank you enough.”
“Most natural thing in the world, in many ways, she is your mother in how she cares for you. But then again, your bond with her – is very strong.” Oh he’s seen it – he knows. Then there is a fond smile that makes its way across his lips. “Thank you so much, Cloud. Means a lot to know you feel that way. And there’s no need to thank me. This is my pride and joy right here.”
Watching her go, Cloud chews on his lip. The gentle squeeze to his shoulder brings him out of his cloud of worry, looking at Mikas. "Thanks Mikas. I just hope being here helps." The blonde shook his head, blue eyes staring down at his feet.
(( ...'brings him out of his cloud of worry'. xD ))
“I hope for the same thing.” Mikas would feel otherwise a failure if Lily did not come around. He would try something later, perhaps when it’s night-time and possibly when her mood has settled some. Turning his gaze back to blond. “You look like you could use a bit of cheering up yourself.”
Cloud took the greens, holding them for Lily in hopes that she would eat - however, she simply hangs her head, the tip of her beak just touching them. "Come on Lily, you have to eat something. Please..." In response, the large bird simply slowly begins to walk away, leaving Cloud looking absolutely hopeless.
Mikas sighed out once more – eyes falling shut. This was going to be difficult. He more than shared Cloud’s pain. “Let her go for now, Cloud.” He speaks gently, though it’s clear that her reaction has affected him as well. He reaches to give the man’s shoulder a squeeze. Reassuring, supportive. “You know I’ll do all I can to help.” That goes without question. Though Mikas is worried this time – he’s never seen Lily like this before.
Cloud feels along the feathers of Lily's back, looking just as depressed as the bird did. He leans in to the side of her face, giving her beak a kiss. Lily warbles and acknowledges the blonde by leaning her head into the kiss. "It'll be okay, Lily." Cloud sighs and lets his head drop a bit - his bond with the chocobo clearly strong.
Taking something out of his satchel, Mikas hands a bushel of greens over to Cloud. Hoping that Lily will eat it, perhaps the chance would be greater if he fed it to her instead. He could always tell that the bond between the two was deep. He was always happy to see such devotion. “Just think about this, Miss Lily. Think about all the walking Cloud would have to do. Why, he’d wear out his boots so quickly, he’d have to hoof it barefoot. In the rain. Oh the shame of it, such muddy toes.” He was obviously attempting to lighten the mood. He made a face.
Cloud nods, "Yeah Lily. Mikas is right." The bird continues to stand motionless, even after the soothing words. She warks softly and ruffles her feathers a bit. The blonde frowns a little before moving over to her other side.
Mikas lets out a soft sigh – it really did break his heart to see her like this. But he did know, or at least understand – that words might not be enough. The ministrations of his hand cease, but the comforting touch is still there. Blue eyes show concern as he watches Cloud approach.
Cloud leads Lily in once the gate is open, reaching to unclasp the reigns from her head, tossing them to hang over a fence. With a sigh, he leans back, watching the albino Chocobo as she continues to mope. "She laid three this time, Mikas. She wouldn't even eat this morning."
He closed the gate once the three of them were inside. His eyes followed Lily for a moment, before returning to the blond. There was constriction in his chest at Cloud’s words – not one egg. But three. None of which had hatched. He shakes his head. “Now Miss Lily, I know this is a terribly painful time for you.” He moves to stroke his fingers soothingly through the feathers on her head. “But I think you’re forgetting about someone whom you care for every day. Whom you mother just as if he was your own. He needs you to be strong for him, Miss Lily. Can’t make him face this world without you. He loves you. That right, Cloud?” He plants a soft and tender kiss to the very tip of her beak. “And I’d be awfully sad to see you go too, Miss Lily. Don’t you forget that either.” Of course, these words are nothing but a plaintive reminder that she has to take care of herself, not meant to have her feel guilty or anything of that nature.
The blonde leads the albino chocobo onto the farm, stopping her briefly to reach up and scratch her head. "It's okay Lily, we're here to see Mikas. Don't you want to see him?" She brings her head up, a sad look in those big eyes, but warks softly in response.
Mikas’ Chocobo Ranch is located on the very edge of a lush wood, overlooking glittering seas and slightly detached from the mainland. Take the typical size of a [Chocobo] Ranch, add another half, you’ve got his. The stables are in the back, with the massive surrounding fence pens them in as they’ll roam to get fresh air and sunshine. Farmhouse isn’t too far from the main gate. Most of the Chocobos are enjoying their second feeding. So it’s quiet outside of some errant warks back and forth. Mikas has just stepped up to the house, when he spots Cloud and Lily – smiling warmly, he approaches the gate. “Cloud, always a pleasure. Well, Miss Lily, what a genuine delight to have you here.” He’s always cordial with both human and avian, but he can already tell something has upset the Chocobo deeply. “Come in,” He pulls the gate open, motioning for both to enter.
