[txt] I apologise for their lateness, I did not receive your gift until I returned to this ship a few days ago.
[txt] I hope they were not too presumptuous or anything. These kinds of gifts are... close to me, but not always for everyone.
"But-" He’s going to protest about the room order. But, as he looks around the room he realizes she’ll have enough space and things to do in here and he spends most of his time in here anyways. So it doesn’t matter too much. And he could always try sneaking her out. "Never mind."
"She was worried about you, I guess. Yeah, she was worried about me being alone but pretty sure she was worried about you being alone too. Dad, too." He sighs happily and curls up in Joran’s lap, pulling her out of the box and cupping her gently in his hands, grin unable to vanish as she peeps at him. "I should name her…"
Joran opens the letter and gives Demp a sideways glance at the almost-complaint and just sighs a little as he opens it up, pulling out the pile of papers, starting to scan. "Your mother seems to think that with her around I suddenly become much more reliant on parental guidance. I wonder if perhaps we should tell her what my own mother was like."
He frowns at the letter then down at the small bird. "You can name it whatever you like. Except Ghost, that name is taken." He moves to the second page of the letter and a grin pulls at his lips as he starts to read from it, "I'm just so glad you're with our little duckling again. And you know it's about high-time you two really hitch the knot! Dempsey refuses to ask you to marry him but I know you Joran. You're a go-getter and you won't like a nice boy like my son go."
Once finished he starts to laugh, resting his chin on the top of Dempsey's head. "If your mother is insistent I could perhaps buy you a ring for presentation reasons?"
"Yeah, well there’s like six pages in there cause mom is just over the moon that you’re around again and won’t shut up about it." He snickers as he lifts the lid, peeking inside the box.
There’s a brief moment when he doesn’t react at all, just staring down into the box. But it’s not long before his eyes get wide and his grin gets wider and he maybe lets out a small squeak. Moving slowly, he pokes his pinky into the box and giggles as the small chick pecks at it. He finally tears his eyes away from her to stare at Joran before scooting over and wrapping an arm around him and giving him a small kiss then pressing their foreheads together. “Thank you.”
He's about to open the letter while Dempsey is enraptured with the chick but soon there's the familiar warmth of his arms and a kiss and he laughs a little, lifting one hand to gently cup his jaw. "She is small and delicate, but I believe she will be a good companion. And she is not allowed out of the room, Director's orders."
Smiling and slightly proud that he managed to finally get a gift right he pulls Dempsey into his lap and lets him sit there with his newfound companion. "Your mother was really that concerned over me leaving you alone? Hmm... Six letters is an awful lot, what does she even have to say about me?"
Joran just makes a few pitiful noises and curls up around his little box with holes in it, not bothering to open his eyes. “I am good at my job. I just happened to be on a planet that required more stalking than actual work… Some of these scientists the Director wants can be very slippery.
He holds up the box as a peace offering, the prize inside cheeping quietly. “But I have brought you your Christmas present. It took an extra week to get. Paid holiday shopping thanks to the Director.”
"Scientists aren’t slippery you’re just getting rusty!" He’s about to give Joran another, nicer jab out of annoyance but as soon as the box is offered to him he freezes. With another huff he turns on his heels and ventures deeper into the lab, knocking things over and muttering about losing things as he goes.
He’s back in a couple minutes, dropping the handle of the knife and an opened envelope next to Joran then taking the box and sitting on the bed, poking at it gently. “Mom and dad sent you a card and don’t try to open that knife until I show you how. Now what’s this?”
Joran sits up and waits patiently with the box in his lap, already feeling calm and content despite the grumbles and huffs from his partner. When the knife handle drops he catches it out of instinct though the letter he doesn't quite catch for fear of upsetting his box.
"Your parents are odd. And that means a lot coming from me.' He says, settling the knife down in favour of picking up the warm box and handing it over gently. "I promised you an animal. This is the animal. She is very nice but will require you to watch her."
[MAYBE has been gone for a month or so and returns very casually to sit on demp's bed while he's out and falls asleep there to whirling machines and Ghost (and maybe finally has Dempsey's gift as well picked up courtesy of a farmer on an outlier planet)??]
[MAYBE enters his room and stares at Joran for over a minute, squinting suspiciously. and maybe huffs quietly after a while before walking over and jabbing Joran roughly in the ribs] A month! A month?! How bad have you gotten at your job to be gone A MONTH?

Christmas had never been something widely celebrated by his mother or his father. Even on the run the few chances he had with the others to celebrate the holiday were few and far between.
Still, the scarf was really incredibly nice and after being away on a missions for over a month the gesture was more than appreciated.
Though he wasn't sure if he was supposed to return it... What would Foxtrot even want? Could presents be given late? Post holidays?
What's your biggest regret about joining the project and the best part about joining the project?
I never actually joined the Project. I'm here because the Director... Pays for my services. There wasn't much of a choice but the worst part about being here on the Project is being cooped up in the ship and unable to leave during shore leave.
The best part is that Fiona and Dempsey are here with me. And Ghost.
Why don't you like the director?
I have no qualms with the Director. He is my employer and he is paying my way to freedom. A steady job killing people is not easy to find and it is actually rather nice having a steady base of operations to return to each time a job is complete instead of having to uproot Fiona and Dempsey every time I finish a job.
Though I would rather be back on Earth, I do not actually dislike the Director.

In a similar situation. Bunked up somewhere with Dempsey and Fiona with me, hunting down criminals and doing assassination contracts.

Finding a moment of peace and quiet with both Dempsey and Fiona back in his life was difficult. Boundaries were always respected but due to circumstances the idea of boundaries between the three was never really something considered all too relevant. He enjoyed their company but sometimes Joran wanted to sink back into the sullen boy his mother had crafted so lovingly so many years ago.
Skulking through the halls with an enormous sniper rifle slung across his back he tried to figure out a place that would get him a few hours, or minutes, of quiet. He felt uncharacteristically vulnerable since the serum and his confession of deep care of Fiona and Dempsey and felt as though he needed to 'rugged up' a bit. But the Freelancer areas of the ship were too obvious and he ventured towards the hangars and grunt quarters.
Holing up in a corner of one of the hangar with Ghost curled up nearby he tried to make himself as inconspicuous as possible, lowering the rifle to the ground and starting to pick it apart, piece by piece and praying that he wasn't invading some other Freelancer's chosen hiding place or a grunt's workplace.
