tv show clarisse is a much better and more developed character than book clarisse. i really love how she's written in the show. like, she may be hard on her crew, but she's still so reluctant on not sacrificing them because she made them a promise, and when she sees them being taken she runs to help irrespective of the danger. she makes them respect her as their captain on her own terms and not on ares'. she is ares' daughter and you can see that because she's so fierce and passionate and courageous, every single thing she does is motivated by how strongly she cares - not just about her father's approval, but also about OTHERS. you can see her emotions and vulnerability motivate her strength, but it doesn't make her any less rough or hard. she just has more layers to her in the show than she does in the book, she's not just a "angry rude girl" but a leader and a fighter who represents some of her father's best qualities but thinks she needs to live up to his worst ones. god... clarisse la rue they could never make me dislike you!!!

I see a lot of people saying that "If I had to choose between saving Olympus and saving you, Annabeth, I'd burn it all down" is too much, too soon for percabeth and they're ruining the slowburn, and I just want to push back on that a bit.

The thing is that as romantic as it might read to the audience, it's actually not at all about that for Percy. He follows it up by saying he feels the same about Grover. He's not making a romantic declaration in that moment, and I don't even think it occurs to him that it could sound like one. For him, it's all about how much he loves his friends and how he would choose them over anything, even Olympus, if it came down to it.

His fatal flaw.

Which, of course, Annabeth knows. She doesn't hear the romantic connotations in it either, she just hears how dangerous this makes him. She's not swooning over it, she's actually kind of horrified about it. She's doing a million mental calculations about how this is going to impact her efforts to try to save Olympus (and Percy).

It's kind of great, because yes, it's a fun percabeth moment for the audience, who can read the subtext and know that they end up together in the books. But the slowburn is preserved for the characters. To them, there was nothing romantic about it.

It's funny how Percy's priority was Annabeth and Clarisse's was the fleece, but it was Percy who ended up confronting Luke for the fleece, and Clarisse who fought to protect Annabeth.

It's wonderful how the series establishes these dynamics and motivations within the team and allows them to reveal more about themselves than that.

Because yes, Percy would sacrifice the world if it meant saving someone he loves, but at the same time, he doesn't actively want the world to be destroyed, so when the opportunity presents itself to be a good person, to be a hero, but without putting the people he loves in danger, he seizes it.

Because yes, Clarisse is a camper trained to prioritize the success of her battles over the risks and, to some extent, the lives of those around her, but at the same time, she is loyal and cares about those who fight alongside her, so if she finds an opportunity to help an ally without sacrificing the success of the battle, she doesn't hesitate to come to their aid.

The choice to balance Percy and Clarisse's strengths and weaknesses was, for me, the highlight of this season in terms of character dynamics.

Imagine your older sister figure gets brought back to life years after you watched her die protecting you and the first thing she does is (unintentionally) electrocute your best friend/crush--and you're also watching this with a whole arrow through your shoulder

then you have to wait four whole days for either of them to wake up. And when they do you also find out she was actually killed by her father because she disagreed with him one (1) time but you finally get to hug her again but she also starts looking like she's about to (intentionally) re-electrocute your best friend

Ok I have to say I enjoy the changes they made for Thalia’s backstory

The fact that Zeus turned her because she was defying him and not because she was mortally wounded? Very on point with his character and the story in general

It also raises the stakes of whether Thalia will be a friend or a foe, at least in Percy’s mind.

But most of all I like that what she told Zeus before he changed her is actually foreshadowing her fate. “I will never be your weapon”. One would think it means she would side with Kronos, but her ending up joining the Hunters in order to not be a pawn for either side? Very smart

zeus turning thalia into a tree as punishment for his own mistake (of having her!! her only mistake was that she was born which was not in her control!!!) instead of as an act of mercy, and then forcing chiron and everyone else to lie and say he saved her, is such a good change from the books i wonder why it wasn't done in the books. this choice makes the choice thalia is going to make - which side she's going to be on - an actual problem. also her being 15 and frozen in time as a tree instead of slowly aging makes so much more sense. like this change really shows you why it was so easy for kronos to manipulate luke, because the gods really do not care about them, they've never cared, and it won't be crazy to think that their children would want revenge. what a great writing decision pjotv writers i love you so much

they mirroring eachothers fall!!!!!!! what an insane storytelling choice, they are so similar in so many ways and yet percy is downright scared because all he knows now is that there's a possibility she could join luke and that she can take his friends away from him because they knew her first

and the stare down???? when they woke up and thalia started asking about luke???? as if percy is the reason why he is not there??? oh my poor boy

yeah rereading the hunger games really is the funniest experience because katniss will spend time remarking on peeta’s eyelashes or the colour of his hair or the fact that he’s strong or the way his hugs make her feel or how much he matters to everyone or how perfect he is and then immediately turn around and be like ugh i wish i could love this boy! i wish i was in love with him right now! wish i felt the way he does about me! girl!!!!!! you are WORSE!
