john’s expression fell at her words, “so i guess temper is not one thing i have in common with him, huh.” john muttered as he looked down, toying with the cap of the water bottle before peered up at her again. “things like what?” he asked more attentively as he shook his head, “i can come with you, make sure you have back up.”

“In that regards, you certainly inherited more of your mother’s spirit but that’s not saying your father didn’t have a temper when he needed it. I was on the wrong end of that a time or two..” she had never regretted disappointing someone more, not even her own father.

Rose held up her hand before he could offer anymore assistance. “This is a personal debt I owe. It should not require back up so I will not put you out there for no reason. I still have a mission or two left in me.“

john frowned as his eyes followed the path the drone disappeared too, “you shouldn’t be out on your own, ari.” he murmured with a shake of his head, “what was so important that you had to come out of safety? if you needed something you could have just called me.”

Arianna grimaced as he scolded her for being out. “Back on the island I could go anywhere I saw fit, it’s driving me  c r a z y being cooped up like this. Besides, I can handle it, I just was trying to keep innocents out of the line of fire.” She crossed her arms. “I just wanted to run out and grab a snack. It shouldn’t be this difficult and you don’t have to hold my hand….”

john sighed softly as he tightened his grip on andrew’s hand as he laced their fingers. his expression warmed at andrew’s understanding - he didn’t get that from a lot of people. with his other hand he gripped andrew’s chin gently, tilting his head up so he can press a kiss against andrew’s lips. “what am i ever going to do without you?” he whispered into andrew’s lips before he finally stood up, pulling andrew closer – it had taken time, a lot of time, but john was comfortable with andrew, more comfortable than he thought he’d be with anyone. “but i want you to worry about your own safety too, okay? it’s so dangerous for you out there, and i want you to be safe.”

Andrew smiled slightly as he felt John begin to tip up his chin, kissing him back softly. He chuckled at the question posed as his boyfriend began to pull away, shaking his head. “God help you if you ever have to find out.” He joked, crading John’s jaw as he leaned their foreheads together. “I’m being safe, promise.” He muttered, letting out a small sigh as he shook his head. “I still don’t… like using my powers. If I could I’d never use them all. Or at least trade them for something different.”

tommy’s eyes flickered up to his father’s face as roy held his, his shoulders falling a little. his father’s words, the pain in his eyes, it all really shattered his resolve. there was no longer any defensiveness, no longer any anger. instead he lurched forward into his father’s arms, his own wrapping around him to hug him tightly. “it’s going to be fine, dad.” he whispered with renewed fervor. it wouldn’t be enough to put his father at ease. tommy pulled away slowly, his hands falling over roy’s shoulders to hold tightly, “i don’t know if this will make it any better…but…i think you and i should just have each others’ backs.”

Roy immediately hugged Tommy back, holding his son close as tight as possible as the dam in his chest broke, heaving out a shaky sob. “I just can’t lose you, alright? I can’t risk that again.” He told him brokenly, not pulling away until he felt Tommy begin to draw back. “Yeah, okay, that… that sounds good.” He muttered, nodding his head as he wiped at his cheeks.

ellie’s lips flickered into a weak smile as leia wiped away her tears, nodding along with leia’s words – that’s how it was. they went through and overcame everything together. ellie slumped into the wheelchair, exhausted, as her hands folded over her lap. “do you think mom will be home by the time we get there?” ellie asked curiously as she peered up at her sister – their mother had been busy, lately, running herself into the ground. “we could maybe convince her to do a movie night. it’s been a while since we all had a night together.”

“I hope so.” Leia muttered with a small frown. Alex had been burying herself more and more in work ever since they found out that Aunt Kara was sick. But it felt almost like she was specifically avoiding Leia more than anyone. She was sure she was just imagining it but… it didn’t stop the feeling from leaving her a little hollow. “Yeah, I’d like that.” She nodded in agreement as they moved along the street together, keeping an eye out for one of the ice cream stands that tended to be dotted along the way this time of year.

ellie arched a brow as he stumbled over his words - her uncle always had a sense of humor when he told stories about his travels, this must be why. ellie smiled a little, “alex danvers is my mom.” ellie told him, “and you’re –” ellie hesitated, her eyes narrowing, “i don’t think i should tell you, time travel rules and all that. i’m ellie.” ellie held out a hand to shake his - it felt so weird to meet her uncle, her godfather, when he was so young. “you know i wouldn’t worry about it. you still definitely look good.” ellie assured him, “how come you’re here? is there something wrong?”

“Ellie.” Carter muttered, the resemblance clicking with him now. Not in that they looked alike - he knew both of Alex’s daughters were adopted - but he remembered Alex mentioning her daughter’s injury. And there were certain mannerisms that he just immediately associated with members of the Danvers family. “Yeah, whatever it is you probably shouldn’t.” He agreed with a nod before laughing a little awkwardly. “Sort of, yeah. Maybe once I figure it out and we fix it I can tell you more someday.”

the purple haired girl was listening to what he was saying, understanding what he means by that, she was always worried about her aunt and the dangers that can be around her. “the only option is talking to him and ask him to understand…” the girl muttered, looking into his eyes. “i wish i could help you more, i hate seeing you like this..” she muttered, now giving him just a small kiss and placing her forehead against his. “just talk to him, don’t avoid him. you might feel better if you do that.”

tommy nodded slowly against her forehead, his eyes closing as she pressed her lips against his. “just talking to you is helping me more than you can imagine.” he assured her as slid further into the couch to pull her down with him, “let’s just stay here for a while, okay? i missed you.” tommy took her advice to heart -- he knew she was right, he was just going to have to talk to his father at some point, but right now he just wanted to hold her close to him and drift away.

And I can’t…” His voice cracked as he ducked his head, taking in a deep breath to try and control himself. “Logically, I know you’re tough, that we taught you well. But all I can think about is what if it isn’t enough.”

Winn just needed some air, that was all. He had promised himself that he would be strong for Mary and Alura and he’d continue to be strong for Ellie, too. She was hurting just as much as they were, her body broken and unable to move. He just needed some air. The city looked so peaceful from the height they were at, enough that Winn could pretend for just a moment that everything was fine. That Kara would come flying by in any moment, cloaked by that familiar blue and red suit. 

He turned his attention to Ellie the second she spoke, the frown slipping back into a soft smile. It was fake and they all knew it, but smiling seemed to help. If anything, he was keeping up appearances. “When’d you get so good at baking?” He asked as he picked one up, taking a bite without question.

“well, i have a lot of time on my hands. figured i should pick up a new hobby.” ellie shrugged her shoulders before tilting her head - her uncle’s smile was so hollow, ellie wished she could do something to cheer him up. “uncle winn, do you...do you want to see some of my art? i’ve had lots of time on my hand, and i made something. i’d like to know what you think of it.”

Carter reared his head back slightly in surprise at that, blinking owlishly down at the girl as he stared at her. “Uuuuh.” He drew out, trying to think of a half-decent excuse or wave off the girl’s apparent familiarity with him, but he had already been made, and honestly had no clue how to respond. “…So, who’s kid are you?” He questioned, unable to think of anything in the moment except the need to figure out just who this kid was and who he might need to play damage control with. “2019… I haven’t greyed that much have I?”

“My favorite,” she hummed. Kara knew full well she wouldn’t eat them but she couldn’t snub out Ellie’s joyful light. “I was thinking that maybe we change it up. Instead of watching, we dance along.” Are you trying to kill yourself? Kara’s mind chided the silliness of her desires. She chose not to listen to logic today. Kara wanted to let go. To embrace the moments that would travel with her beyond this hollowed ground. 

“You know,” her words slowed with her smoothly blossoming grin, “you mother was an excellent dancer. She didn’t like to dance in front of people–or maybe just me but I would watch her through the crack of her door. She had never looked so at peace” At least not without a few glasses of scotch.

 “Let’s be at peace, El.”

ellie frowned a little at her aunt’s words, her eyes flickering down to the wheelchair she sat in. “maybe we shouldn’t...” ellie shook her head slowly, she didn’t want her aunt to exert herself, and ellie didn’t know she could be what her aunt needed her to be now. if only leia was here. ellie’s lips flickered into a small smile at her aunt’s words, “really? i don’t think i’ve ever seen mom dance.” ellie noted - her mother had been so serious lately, hardened by everything the world had been throwing at her. 

“aunt kara...” ellie shook her head helplessly, “i haven’t...i didn’t make enough progress in my physical therapy to dance.”

Mar’i could feel John’s mood shift from jovial to protective, maybe it was due to them being twins, but she could just feel the air around them change ever so slightly. She gave him a reassuring smile as they walked to the bar, taking a seat on one of the less dirty bar stools. “Well, it’s a good thing I like beer.” She said jokingly, trying to alleviate some of the tension.

She took a sip of beer and nearly let out a sound of disgust. “Warm beer… Nice.” She said with a laugh, finding it remarkable how she felt simultaneously at home and out of place in the dingy light of the bar. She held up her glass for him to cheers. “Here’s to you, Nightwing.” She’d missed messing with him.

john’s eyes flickered to mar’i face apologetically when he realized he’d let his emotion take over - almost taint their evening. he could afford to relax, the slightest bit so he could enjoy his sister’s company. he sipped the beer, making a face at the taste of warm beer as it hit his tongue. his lips flickered into an eased smile when she held the glass to cheers him, and he lifted his own to knock into hers, the telltale clink and the beer, despite the taste, doing some to loosen the tension he felt. 

until, one of the men moved closer to mar’i, his hand trailing over her waist as he stepped between them, “you don’t need to be cheering nightwing, sweetheart. we can find other things for us to cheer.” it was as if that had been the much needed trigger, the last straw, and john’s hand slammed the glass back down on the bar. he clasped the man’s shoulders, pulling him around, “hands off, asshole.” john’s hand fisted into the man’s shirt as he pulled him away from mar’i. “or what, kid?” john’s tongue pushed against his lower lip, “or i’m gonna make you regret every laying a hand on her.”

Arianna let out breath she had been holding as the drone passed them by. That had been too close. She crossed her arms as she watched him remove the device from the door. “I was just running an errand,” she explained with a shrug. She knew better than to attract attention to herself now that they were seeking anyone with Kryptonian blood. “It just came out of nowhere…like it already was tracking me.”

She cocked her head to the side curiously. “What are you doing out?”

“Listen, I wasn’t exactly known for my even temper. Your father had to reign me back multiple times when I acted on my emotions. It happens to the best of us but it’s how you learn from it that matters.” Rose didn’t want to discourage the young man but she knew it was likely to happen again.

Wanna make sure he’s alright. That he’s gonna come home safe.”
