Design 1
I believe that design is very powerful, this is one of the main reason why I decided to take this course. I wanted to start learning about all the little details such as colour, position, type and more that make a difference. This course has taught me a lot. With each assignment or in class exercise we had, I learned something new, whether it’s a shortcut or different functions and skills on how to use a software it’s still valuable. For example, with our first assignment, which was the Silhouette assignment, that was my first time working with illustrator so I definitely learned a lot. This assignment was a bit restricting and had a lot of rules which made it harder but I enjoyed it because it allowed me to see the object as it it and with repetition come up with a new ideas on how to use it. For the collage book cover assignment, I didn’t really like my book cover for different reasons. First, it was hard to find matching objects to an extent and I am not a football fan, and I don’t watch football. Also, one specific thing frustrated me with this project, is that the black border I drew was not as black as the spine or the top part behind the football helmet, and after I thought I fixed it, when printed out I could see the difference again. The pattern of life assignment was very complex and took me a lot of time, but this one has greatly improved my skills in using illustrator, I loved it. The fourth project was making a small booklet that includes a short text about my ten favourite things. For this assignment it was also my first time working with InDesign, it was fun to learn all these functions of InDesign and I liked how this software is very flexible and helps in laying out text and images in anyway I wanted. It’s so ironic because every time I read a book, I always think to myself how do they decide what goes where and how to align the text, the font and how it’s printed. This assignment gave me a glimpse of how it goes. In general, I am really glad I took this course because I am very interested in design. And even though we did not do a lot of Typography, but the basics we learned empower me. The only thing that might have cause me some frustration during this course is that I change my mind a lot, and it takes me a lot of time to decide on which design I like better, and since design is unlimited and the amount of things I could do with it is infinite that caused some problems at times. But the key, I learned, is to keep trying different options until one looks right to me and to be patient. Sometimes it’s also better to leave it for a few hours or a day and then look at again, because when looking at a design for too long your eyes get used to it and you might not notice little things that don’t look right.
