wait im so fucking smart ok hold on so getens quirk name. ice ply i was trying to figure out what all this business was with the frost in his cell in 387 so i was like okay let me look at the kanji 氷操 (hyoso) which, when translated straightforward, is "ice manipulation" which like, ok duh however. however. i am on to horikoshis little tricks so i look up the kanji separately to look for specific connotations and the -so part, Misao, really doesnt mean "manipulation/operation/control" as its main meaning. its much more heavily associated with faith/honor/chastity/etc and im like 🤔 because if hes picking a kanji that is an unusual choice for the meaning then there must be something else

so i decide to google hyoso, and, lo and behold hyoso (diff kanji) is the art of mounting wall scrolls for preservation and decorative purposes. very heavily associated with and originating in hanging up buddhist writings and sutras. and , as we know, geten means apocrypha, a religious text of unknown origin and unknown veracity, and in the context of buddhism, non-buddhist writings especially those from Confucianism.

and buddhism and confucianism, while syncretically coexisting, are at odds philosophically in a really interesting way: buddhism is about personal enlightenment (awakening, even), inner peace, internal progress, and the release of suffering through it : confucianism is about how to achieve the pinnacle of humanity through strict social hierarchy, virtues, and order.
