“Perhaps,” he answered as he took another measured step forward, calm and centered despite the danger standing before him. “But I believe there are times when standing alone is necessary. Especially when others are too afraid to stand at all.”

  𝓖reen eyes shifted from the tile on the floor to briefly watch Tenzin move to crouch down beside her, trying to comfort her in this troubling time. They didn't know what the outcome would be, they didn't know how long this would be. Would word even reach back to Zaofu about what happened? Perhaps there was some truth in his words about becoming stronger by leaving home and her choice to leave was not in vain. Everything happened for a reason, and there was a reason why she had been given airbending. The universe clearly had something in store for her. She knew that she would be part of the new air nation, but what else would only be revealed In time. ❝I- I know korra complemented my airbending. It was very nice of her.❞ She gave a small nod, and another sniffle. Tears still pooled in her eyes. The new airbender couldn't shake the terrified feeling from her mind and her stomach. Hearing Tenzin's wisdom and calm voice was beginning to ground her racing mind. ❝What's going to happen? Have the airbenders been attacked before? I mean.... after the... you know.❞ She gave her head a small shake, unsure of the proper words to use to ask about the subject.

After the genocide. After the Fire Nation had hunted his people to near extinction and the  Air Nomads had been reduced to stories, ruins, and the unbearable weight placed upon one frightened little boy.

“No,” he answered softly. “Not like this.” His throat tightened despite the calmness in his voice. The Red Lotus had targeted the future of the Air Nation itself. Every instinct within him screamed against the helplessness of being trapped here. Tenzin forced a steady breath into his lungs before Opal could notice the flicker of fear that crossed his expression. “When we started to rebuild the Air Nation… there was always going to be opposition somewhere in the world. Things that could threaten our sovereignty. But the airbenders themselves…” His eyes lowered briefly. “We haven’t faced a threat like this since the Hundred Years' War.” And that was precisely what terrified him.

Zaheer understood exactly what the Air Nation represented. Hope. Balance returning to the world. If the Red Lotus wished to shatter that hope, then imprisoning its newest members and forcing an impossible choice on Korra was no coincidence. Tenzin straightened slightly beside her, drawing back the storm threatening to surface in his own thoughts. He couldn’t afford to unravel. Not while his family and his people looked to him for steadiness.

“But listen to me carefully,” he said, firmer, though no less gentle. “Fear can convince us that because something terrible happened, there isn’t any hope. My father spent his life proving that wasn’t true.” A faint, tired smile touched his face at the thought of how his father was impossibly hopeful even after everything he had lost. “He believed the Air Nation could live again now it is. Because of brave people like you. I don’t know what Zaheer intends. And I won’t insult you by pretending there’s no danger.” Tenzin’s voice lowered. “I am afraid, too, Opal. But fear doesn’t mean we have already lost.”

Tenzin stiffened on instinct, his shoulders drawing tight under Bumi’s arm as he exhaled through his nose the way he did when he was reminding himself to be an adult about things.

“…Yes. I’ve noticed,” he said dryly, adjusting his robes where Bumi had poked him, as if smoothing the fabric could restore order to the universe. “She hasn’t rejected me,” he added in a defensive tone. “She’s just… growing. Finding her own balance. And that means she doesn’t need me in the same way anymore.” He paused, his gaze drifting off. “Which is… good. That’s what I wanted for her.”

He glanced back at Bumi, brow lifting. “Even if it does feel like being quietly demoted from hero to embarrassing parental figure.”

The wind coming off the bay carried the scent of rain and salt through the upper terraces of Air Temple Island. Prayer chimes whispered softly overhead, their tones uneven in the evening gusts. Below, Republic City glowed in scattered ribbons of gold and electric white, alive in the way it always was, moving forward whether anyone was ready or not.

Tenzin sat alone at the edge of the temple steps, hands folded tightly in his lap. The memorial fires behind him had long since burned low. Most of the guests had already left. Even his siblings had given him space. Out across the water, illuminated against the darkening sky, Avatar Aang’s statue stood watch over the city. His father looked eternal from this distance. Untouchable.

“I thought today would feel different,” he admitted quietly. “Everyone came to honor you. World leaders, air acolytes, old friends…” A faint breath escaped him as the fabric of his robes shifted slightly in the breeze. “But all I could think during the ceremony was that I never got enough time.” His jaw tightened for a moment before easing again.

“I kept waiting for you to walk back into the room and make a joke or correct everyone about the incense placement or the way they folded the ceremonial banners. Anything.” He shook his head once. “I know what you meant to the world. I do. But to me, you were just… my dad.”

I'm excited to dive into Tenzin with the same love and care I have for Aang and Zuko. And I'm happy to engage with you guys.   𝓘t was hard to hold back her tears, but it was her first time away from home, and now the Red Lotus was attacking. Opal felt ill-prepared for the world that truly lay outside of the protective domes of Zaofu. It made her miss the safety and comfort that was her home. ❝I should never have left...❞ She sniffled, keeping her eyes fixated on a tile on the floor. Things had become far too real, too quickly. It was her choice to leave, and now she was having slivers of regret, not knowing whether or not she would see her family again.

Tenzin’s expression softened the moment he heard the tremor in Opal’s voice. He knelt beside her and hoped his calm presence would be the grounding she needed. He understood the fear that came when the world proved harsher and less forgiving than the safety of home.

“Opal,” he spoke gently, “leaving home was not a mistake.” Tenzin rested a hand lightly against his knee, careful not to overwhelm her while she struggled to keep herself together. “The world is dangerous right now. More dangerous than it should be. But courage doesn’t mean being unafraid of that.” His gaze lowered toward the tile she had fixated on. “It means facing it despite the fear.” He exhaled slowly.

“When I was younger, I believed I could protect the people I loved simply by keeping them close.” A faint sadness crossed his features. “But isolation can’t prepare us for life. Your choice to leave Zaofu was brave, Opal. Painful, perhaps… but brave. And your family would rather see you grow into your own person than hide behind those walls forever.” He offered her a small, reassuring smile. “You’re stronger than you think. The fact that you’re frightened only proves you understand what is at stake.”
