Xiong wasn't sure the nature of the laugh or the motion of Aang covering his nose cause of his smell. For a while, he could only feel his embarrassment climb from the gestures, placing his right hand across his eyes to hide his face from shame. However, the sound of steps closer was enough to cue that it was joking in nature.

Why would someome laugh about someone being covered in fertilizer move closer otherwise? It was enough reassurance that he was willing to uncover his face. He was thankful that he had worn gloves when the door broke and had sent them off to be cleaned. That was the only portion of his outfit he could send off. Stepping on the roads could have worse things and he was by no means going to toss his clothes for multiple reasons.

"Sounds like a good way to make a quick exit, just need to work on the landing." A playful grin crosses his face. "Definitely not the best way to be remembered. The guy who smells like a farm exploded."

He had put his name on enlistment with his names swapped, so he was not accustomed to someone using his individual name. "I'm nothing special. The top firebender of my generation from the academy just trying to make amends for my crimes." Though he couldn't really make amends for his crimes against the Fire Nation, military protocol wasn't lenient on him and he was thankful for the pardon.

"A lot of firebenders are all trying to make amends, so needed something unique. Not lying though." He was proud of that accomplishment, especially given his nature of fighting. "Was my smell the only thing that drew your attention Aang?" There was a teasing tone in his voice.

Aang snorted at the comment about the landing, shoulders shaking with another laugh. “See? You get it. Flying’s easy. It’s the suddenly not flying anymore part that causes problems.” He flashed him a grin, though it softened when Xiong Long called himself nothing special. Aang’s brows lifted incredulously. “Okay, hold on—top firebender of my generation and nothing special don’t really belong in the same sentence.”

There was no judgment in his voice when the man mentioned making amends for his crimes. If anything, Aang only studied him more carefully afterward, thoughtful rather than wary. “A lot of people did terrible things during the war,” he said gently. “Some because they wanted to. Some because they were taught to. Some because they thought they had no choice.” He gave a small shrug. “But not everyone decides to change after.” Then the teasing question pulled a crooked smile right back onto his face.

“Your smell definitely made an impression,” Aang admitted shamelessly, waving a hand through the air between them. “But not the strongest first impression.”

● — || 𝐊atara nuzzled herself into his chest more , keeping her eyes open as she looked down at the ground . Her fingers [ [ twisted ] ] into her tunic , letting his words wash over her like a wave . She understood his words , all of them , but something about how he felt really [ [ liked ] ] for a minute because of all the attention he was getting , made Katara's heart sink . Instead of saying anything about it , Katara just closed her eyes .

In that moment , it felt like she was [ [ fourteen ] ] again , accepting that this was something she'd have to get used to if she wanted to be with the Avatar . . . But , that didn't make it hurt any less .

❝ You're allowed to like the attention , Aang . It's not a bad thing . We live in a new place — a place where people didn't get to see the Avatar before . This attention comes with the territory . It might pass but that doesn't mean you're not special anymore . You'll always be special , Aang . . . Attention or not . ❞

Aang sensed her shift in mood immediately. There wasn’t much in the ways of feelings they could conceal from each other after more than a decade together. He knew her heart as well as he knew his own. “Hey,” his fingers gingerly lifted her chin, guiding her eyes to meet his, the sea meeting the horizon.

“I didn’t mean it like that. It wasn’t about being special. Not the special we are to each other. Never that. Just… liked. Ever since you got me out of that iceberg, all I’ve heard from people is how I failed them by running away, and the war was all my fault. Even twelve years later after ending that war, people still blame me for it happening in the first place.” He tries to explain.

“But today, a few of them were excited to meet me. I didn’t realize they were going to get so handsy and flirty—which I put a stop to. But for a little while, it was nice to have people actually like me, you know?”

● — || 𝐐uietly , Katara's eyes followed his hands as they closed the distance between them until they held hers . He squeezed her hands with care , [ [ grounding ] ] her in the thought that he was with her , and no one else . ❝ You don't have to apologize , Aang . . . I should have said something back then instead of acting like a spoiled brat . . . Like I did just now . ❞

Her eyes traced the line her hand made as he carried it to his lips . The kiss there , as light and delicate as the wind on his fingertips , managed to make her smile [ [ peek ] ] through like the sun to a stormy day . ❝ And your opinion's the only one that's ever mattered , Siqiniq . ❞ She buried her head in his chest as her arms wrapped [ [ firmly ] ] around his waist .

❝ And , Aang ? ❞ Katara closed her eyes as her fingers twisted into his tunic . ❝ I'm sorry . . . That I didn't say something sooner . ❞

“It’s ok,” his hand finds a gentle rhythm, caressing her back as he holds her. “I’m not upset with you, and anyone who loves their partner would feel insecure when strangers are trying to be all over them, even when you know in your heart it will never happen. It’s been a lot of me, too, since we moved to the city. I’m not used to all this attention every day, and maybe I let it get to my head today, like when I was a kid, because for a minute, I felt really liked. I’m sorry that I didn’t see how that was hurting you.”

“𝓘 remember such a time, even though it seems so unimaginable now.” She paused, listening to the airy stillness that the landscape offered. Sonam sauntered further, ensuring her footsteps were light against the ground as she tread alongside the younger airbender. Her vibrant, tangerine fabrics streamed down her shoulders. “Back when the foundations of our temple had just been set, and when the staff was first made–my disciples were the same, learning to trust the air and become one with it is no simple task.”

Her brows pressed inward, forming a subtle crease on her forehead as she became seemingly lost in her own sorrows. Her intonation was quieter, and it carried an unresting grief. “Tell me, is it truly everything we’ve ever hoped for?”

Aang's steps slowed completely at her question, and for a few breaths he didn't answer. The wind of the spirit world moved around them in soft currents, teasing at the edges of Sonam's robes and stirring the folds of his own. His eyes drifted toward the horizon, where sky and earth blurred together in a line so distant it seemed unreal.

"I thought it would feel different." He admitted, his voice quiet. "When I was twelve, I used to imagine this all the time. Air Nomads everywhere. Temples full again with children laughing in the halls and sky bison crowding the sanctuaries. I’ve carried that dream with me for twelve years, and some days it was the only thing that kept me going." Aang smiled faintly, but there was sadness in it. "And now it exists." He looked back at her.

"The temples are alive. There are people who meditate in the plazas and leave offerings beneath the statues, who study our teachings and love our culture, who look at the sky and feel the same yearning for freedom we do. But if you're asking whether it feels complete..." He shook his head. "No. I don't think it ever could. Because every moment of progress carries the shadow of what was lost to reach it. The Air Nomads are returning in the only way they can, but the people who raised me aren't here to see it. The world I wanted to save is gone, Sonam." The admission hung heavily between them.

"But that doesn't mean this isn't what we hoped for. I think hope and grief live together sometimes. The more something matters to us, the harder it is to separate them." Aang drew a deep breath, feeling the wind brush against his skin. "When I watched those acolytes today, I wasn't seeing replacements for the people we lost. I wasn't trying to rebuild the past." His eyes brightened slightly. "I was watching something new being born. Something that belongs to them."

"Someone force me to take a break because I have not slept in two days, but these need to be filed by tomorrow morning."

● — || 𝐊atara's gaze slowly started to relax as he talked — her hardened glare [ [ softening ] ] until her eyes fell to the ground by her shoes . ❝ They can have desires , Aang , and I'm not saying that they can't . . . Just that this feels like when we were on Kyoshi Island when we were kids , and you kept entertaining those [ [ girls ] ] who called you cute and [ [ Aangy ] ] . ❞ She looked to the side a little , more annoyed with [ [ herself ] ] than the situation .

❝ Sorry . . . I know how stupid that sounds . ❞

Aang’s expression softened immediately, and he closed the space between them, his hands finding hers instinctually as he gave them a reassuring squeeze that he was here, always. “It’s not stupid, Katara. I’m sorry that I ever made you feel that way. I was just a kid who was enjoying people thinking I was great and not the failure I believed I was, and I know you always saw me as great. That you still do.”

He brought one hand to his lips and kissed her palm and then drew her into his arms. His lips spoke in a near whisper behind her ear as he held her. “I didn’t realize how much I hurt you in that one little moment… your opinion of me is the only one that’s ever mattered, Sweetie.”

The expression that takes over her face sends a chill up Aang’s spine; his own face contorts into a grimace that he does a poor job of hiding. “I… don’t feel comfortable answering that question.”
