In this universe, the aeromorph is considered to be something like the spirit or soul of an aircraft. It’s a form the plane can take when it’s not being used as a machine. Nobody knows how this happens, or why they exist
Text:
1900s- Kitty Hawk: The ‘hangar ghost’ occasionally spotted by the Wright brothers in place of their flyer. Her existence was never confirmed
1910s- Sopwith Pup: Aeromorphs of the shy biplane were often spotted by WW1 pilots late at night, communicating amongst each other with strange propeller-noises.
A few pilots were able to gain the trust of these creatures, and found them to be deeply loyal.
post WW1, reports of the existence of ‘plane spirits’ were corroborated by many pilots, though some still considered it a myth.
1920s- the Spirit of St Louis: Lindbergh’s plane is considered the first ‘celebrity aeromorph’. Unlike the first planes, Spirit was not shy about revealing herself to the adoring public
Aeromorph existence slowly becomes common knowledge, leading to ‘aeromadness’ in the 20’s: a public fascination with all things aviation
1930s- Lockheed Electra: By the 30’s many pilots had formed deep friendships with their aircraft. Aviation was no longer a novelty, but accidents were still common
1940s- P-40 Warhawk: in stark contrast to WW1, fighter planes in the Second World War were treated as collaborators and often provided valuable strategic input. A new generation of fighters were created, ones that craved the thrill of battle
1950s- “Super Connie”: By the 50s, the aeromorph was not just a curiosity only encountered by those working in aviation. The first airliners, like the Lockheed Constellation, were expected to fly well and present a friendly image to the public
I've always really liked aeromorphs, but i particularlly love your worldbuilding and character writing! I ended up gushing to a lot of my friends about your work and showing them your comic with Needles on a date (i really like how genuinely uncomfortable she seems and her characterization is so strong). You inspired me to pick up and redesign my previous attempt at an aeromorph character!
Hi, thank you so much! Love your plane :D she’s so cute
There are quite a few nasa/space travel themed aeromorphs out there, too. It’s not a subject I know much about, but there are people doing some pretty interesting stuff with the concept
hi really love ur planes they make me happy! one thing i noticed was that unlike a lot of aeromorph designs, you actually include the little passenger windows on the sides of their bodies/fuselages: what would one see if they were to peek into these windows? are they opaque, or would it show the plane’s organs or perhaps the cabin? idk why but the idea of looking into a plane person and seeing a bunch of little seats or a drink cart or whatever is just so funny and cute to me.
Thats a cute idea :D but I kinda just intended for it to be a random pattern since the windows on a plane are a pretty distinct feature to me
If I were going a more speculative bio route with them I’d say theyre sort of like air gills since they remind me of the way a caterpillar lung is set up. At the moment tho im not really working on having their existence make logical sense lol
Piper said that she's a dangerous machine and that machines are not liable to the law - but, like, how "not liable" are they really? I mean, fighter jets obviously can just kill whoever they want, that much has been established, but does that extend to other aeromorphs as well? Do they get immunity only if they can reasonably blame their actions on their pilots, or can they just get away with anything?
Honestly im retconning this lol, I created that image as a one off joke before the planeverse was a concept with internal logic
With plane personhood being a thing, they have to abide by human laws. Though I think except in egregious circumstances, most of them would be off the hook for minor accidents if there was a pilot in command present (and also given that they’re the ones who have to suffer the damages)
The image in question. I’ll recontextualize it to say that Piper is bullshitting to fuck with a student pilot
Is there any major public outcry in your planeverse over the fact that fighter jets are allowed to carry missiles and shit while being extremely unstable and mentally ill? Like, that feels like a recipe for disaster. Someone like Needles could just have a psychotic episode one day and go AWOL and before you know it the nearest school is a pile of rubble.
Tbh this is one of the aspects that doesn’t really require much suspension of disbelief. Irl us law enforcement and defense have access to these sorts of weapons while also being composed of the people you’d least want to have them. I mean if you’re talking about schools, just recently there was the elementary school bombing in Iran, by American soldiers that were presumably deemed mentally capable. so any semblance of ethics or moral conduct is meaningless when you can just have a school full of children killed ‘oops by accident’
Not that I am particularly knowledgeable in global politics or military operations but everything seems to point to the fact that it is already a recipe for disaster, we just don’t see the firsthand effects here in the USA
And if being mentally cleared for these things is anything like it is for the FAA medical, you just have to have nothing on your record and say no when they ask about anything that might imply mental instability. In some ways it sort of disincentivizes getting help or treatment
Your airplanes have such excellent snouts and I am filled with joy and appreciation every time you post them. I love you have an excellent rest of your day and your art is lovely
Hi! Other than brief brushes with plane mutuals' one-off reblogs, I'd never really encountered aeromorphs before. I clicked on your blog all charmed by the dating sim, and am now fully hooked on planeworld. Thank you for drawing, you're super talented (I know the angles on those wings can't be easy 😂) and I really love your cringefail lesbians and complex character dynamics. Really excited for more!!
Hi, thank you so much :D im really glad you and others enjoy them because I have so much fun making them!!
