You can call me Aiyana.
Seeing Britannia on my dash is making me think, I usually call Mama Britannia Igraine (because she's the mother of King Arthur, wow, so original), but I found out apparently in the original Welsh it would be Eigyr? Would that be more appropriate? Or is it arbitrary considering all of the ancient personifications are old and likely have somewhat anachronistic names anyway??
I think that as long as you remain respectful about the names, and the history names have it should be fine. However, to add some larger feel to a story, have different characters call others by different names. Arthur could call her Igraine, and Wales could call her Eigyr. Or depending on the timeline the name changes, maybe on purpose (to be more angofied, or it happens without the nation themselves being aware that they made a switch.) It really depends on how you want to handle the story really. Angst, fluff, casual, historically accurate.
Just remain open to the possibility that someone more well informed on the topic will have a different opinion, and at least hear them out.
Apologies if this wasn't an answer you were looking for.
Hey, I just came across that rarepair post you made -- can I ask what rarepair was it that offended people? Bcs the fact that people are ship shaming in 2023 ffs.... Feel free not to answer though
I was the problem. I had raised a concern about some Germany ships because there is some fanwork out there that writes Germany ships as very predatory and 'wierd'. I had cautioned the person who had responded just making sure that they didn't write like that when wanting to write or create a good functioning and safe relationship.
I removed my responses because either they themselves or someone close to them had gone to my Ask box saying some mean stuff and just generally creating problems where there hadn't been problems. I didnt want to deal with it anymore so I just deleted my responses talking about the ships [starting a conversation] because honestly I didn't need more toxic stuff in my life.

Reblog time!
Hetalians reblog this and write who are your top5 favourite characters!
I'm going to go with Canon characters because I don't think I want to explain the stack of OCs I have ready to start making content for.
1. Romania
2. Taiwan
3. Moldova
4. Prussia
5. South Italy
Genuinely curious @ hetalia fandom, what was the earliest year you got into the fandom??
Can you link the book, or give the name of the book, I want to read it as well, and it gave me the brain worms to write out a situation with it. Please.
Sure :) The University of British Columbia has all the volumes from the arbitration(s) available. The first four volumes deal with the arbitration case in Geneva which was hashing out the dispute about the Alabama and other British boats used during the Civil War. The 5th volume covers the simultaneous arbitration in Berlin dealing with the San Juan Islands and Kaiser Wilhelm, so if that’s the one you’re most interested in (like I was), here’s the link to that page
https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/bcbooks/items/1.0221812?o=0
From there you can also get to the other four volumes if you click on the link to “Papers relating to the Treaty of Washington”. I can tell you from experience the Geneva arbitration documents don’t contain any extra information about the San Juan Islands specifically, but to anyone interested in the boats, BCU has conveniently compiled all of that can of worms into four easy bites for you
Reblogging this so I don't loose this! I have an idea, and I need to have sources to look back at!
Reading the US Arbitration for the San Juan Island Dispute right now, and in their opening the U.S. rep has referred to the U.S. as “the heir of Spain”. I’m about 85 pages in and it’s come up two times. This was written in 1869-70(ish).
The reason the lawyers are bringing it up now is basically to say “We should be allowed to have everything Spain used to own above the 42nd, since Spain’s empire is basically dead and we’re not, and that would include ALL of Oregon, so you see your Highness, German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm I (he was the judge), it was actually very generous of us to offer up the 49th parallel as the border and give Britain all that land they had no right to and despite all that now they’re being dicks about who gets the San Juan Islands which is pretty lame of them tbh”
It’s just a fascinating detail to me because it’s sooo different from the way we think of the U.S. empire now. I see the word “heir” used a lot for Alfred in the fandom, but always in reference to Arthur and the British Empire. Now, that makes a lot of sense to me. The first 13 colonies were British. English is still the majority language in the US. America really took off as a global superpower right as the British empire was collapsing. As an American, I have never once seen someone call Alfred “Arthur’s heir” and thought “wait, but where’s Spain in all this?”
The people who wrote this document probably never imagined the British Empire could collapse, or that having an empire wouldn’t always require physical possession of the actual land.
I would like to imagine in the Hetalia world that just about everybody doesn't know about this or forgets about it. [Because so much happened after this, or because it feels so minor in the grand scheme of things.] Except for Prussia who doesn't even remember himself until he was going through his categlog of journals. He made note of it because he was actually there and got to read the arguments as well.
So I imagine an interaction in the modern day after Prussia gets a refresher goes something like this:
Prussia: Spain have you ever considered who your heir is before?
Spain who is used to strange conversations at this point, but hasn't thought about this is in awhile: I don't think any of my. . .former. . .colonies would want to be associated like that with me.
Prussia: Okay, yes your unawesome attitude has ruined the bonds of your family, but who?
Spain: If someone really wanted to be considered my heir they can be.
Prussia as he explains the whole situation and shows Spain the document.
----
Timeskip to the next world meeting
America as he is sitting down munching on a bag of chips, and having small talk with whoever was unfortunate enough to sit next to him.
Spain comes running in yelling: I have an heir!!
The former Spanish colonies all look at eachother with a look that generalized to 'Who decieded they wanted to be associated with him again?'
Portugal is giving Spain a very confused look that can be boiled down to 'Which person did you bribe?'
England and France stop bickering for a moment before they glance at eachother, and than England has a sort of flashback moment.
[Short random thought that I might continue later.]
Hey Hetalia fans! Yes you!
Reblog with the rarepair you ship, and explain the dynamics or why you like it. I want to get to know some of the other rarepairs.
If you have any content for that rarepair you want others to see (whether you made it or not). I'll go read or look at the fanart and reblog it with my thoughts on it.
I know rarepairs so often get overlooked, and we all want a chance to gush over our ships, so this is your chance!
Before i answer what's the criteria for a rare pair?
Use your instincts. Hetalia has been around for a long time, and there are many websites where people interact about it. Different regions of the fandom ship different things. What is a rarepair in the English fandom might be a regular ship in the Spainsih or Japanese fandom.
If you want to go by AO3, has anywhere between 0 to 175 fics dedicated specifically to the ship. [IE no Harem, or one-shot compliations] It can be over that amount as well but generally speaking if I click the filter button, and see the ship as something I can include or exclude right off the bat, it's not a rarepair]

Summary: Churchill lies, Singapore falls, an empire abandons his children in a sea of wolves. When their brother finds out, there will be hell to pay.In early 1942, Alfred Jones travels across the globe to save his baby brother and sister from the betrayal of their father. When Arthur Kirkland returns at long last, his eldest is waiting for him, ready to spill blood.
Warnings: Language, mentions of death and bodily injury.
Author’s Note: I kept things very vague to make it easier for myself, but this takes place not too long after the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942.

Alfred Jones hadn’t wanted to kill his father this badly since 1781. Come to think of it, Alfred wasn’t sure he’d ever wanted to kill his father as much as he did now.
Sure, he hadn’t been pleased that President Roosevelt acquiesced to Britain’s insistence on a Germany-first strategy. The scar of Pearl Harbor was still fresh and livid, and he was spoiling for a chance to hunt Kiko down personally. Even so, he’d kept his mouth diplomatically shut and had taken heart when Churchill assured him that British forces in the pacific would hold, that the ANZACs would have plenty of reinforcements to hold allied territories there.
That, as it turned out, had been a massive lie. Gargantuan. Colossal. Titanic, in fact. His father might as well have designed the ship himself, stuck his two youngest on board without lifeboats bound straight for an ice field, and stayed cozy in Belfast while Alfred broke his back feeding coal to the Carpathia in a blind, unplanned panic. Churchill fiddled while Singapore fell, and Father fiddled along with him.
“Where is he?” Alfred demanded, ignoring the guard at the entrance who was trying to slow him down.“
"I’m sorry?” Asked the startled British soldier stationed at the war room door.
“Arthur Kirkland. Where is he?”
The soldier took a few tries to say, “General Kirkland hasn’t yet arrived, sir.”
“Fine. Which room will be his?”
“Sir, I’m so sorry, can I get your name, I’ll need to ask–”
“Where?” Alfred demanded, and there was something in his too-perfect voice, his too-blue eyes, that made the soldier startle and point immediately down the hall.
“End of the hall, on the left.”
Alfred stormed in that direction without a word. The soldier blinked a few times. A deer released from headlights, it took him a moment to get his bearings.
“Wait,” he called after Alfred, quickly jogging after him. “Wait sir, you’re not allowed to-” but Alfred was already inside, going around to sit in the officer’s chair behind the empty letter desk. “Sir, the General won’t be here for another five, six hours.”
“Fine,” Alfred said, and had this young Australian known him better, he would have known to be frightened by his stoic, collected anger. Facial expression unchanging, the American wheeled back in the chair and propped his feet on the desk. “I’ll wait.”

Warnings: mentions of neglect, abuse, period typical attitudes and behaviours, colonization, imperialization, civil war, Spain, WW1, Great Depression, WW2, Cold War, the ‘90s and early 2000s. Basically, if it was a major event I touch on it through the lens of the possibility of Nyo!America.

America is probably the only nation I have trouble picturing as female. Maybe Germany and Turkey as well, but NyoAmerica just feels wrong. America is not underhanded, it's an open book and does everything with a brute force approach.
See I can understand why you might think this. You are however looking at two different sides of America. The United States as a whole.
Alfred is brute force and an open book. The United States has been known as fixing things with brute force, Bombs, Wars, Spending money to send military aid. This is one side of America. It is the more 'masculine' side. The side that didn't have to struggle throughout his whole life. He could so what he wants because those barriers don't exist.
Nyo!America is another side of The United States. If I must simplify it. She is the side that espionage, the spy, the one who knows how to twist the hands of others. She would have been constantly doubted as a female, and as her spot amongst the world. The one who didn't want to join wars, but the one who did. The one who ended wars. The one who rose to the top and stayed. No one can stay by brute force, there has to be something else holding it up.
---
On another note America has been personified as a female before. There was no Uncle Sam yet. There was Miss Columbia and Lady Liberty. Two females who represented aAmerica.
Here is just a few of them.
I respect the fact that you cant see USA as a female, but it has happened before, and I personally see America as a female.
Your comment seemed to be demeaning my opinion. If so, why spread hate? My idea of the USA being female was not hurting anyone? In fact it was opening up new possibilities of interpretation. You could have phrased this better.
I leave you with this.
