Having Alfred/America be a female nation could have had a powerful backstory.
The United States as a nation was one a lot of the world thought was going to fail. I mean fighting against one of the largest growing empires in history? But winning with the use of the rest of Europe's hate and pettiness to make alliances. Then no one believing it would last long, but also forming a modern democracy that would inspire a bunch of other places? Unheard of. Making it through a second run in with England, a civil war, expansion, and than becoming a world power despite everyone thinking it wouldn't happen? That would be such a cool story to show through the new 'generation' of world superpower being a female nation.
Nyo!America as a character could be so interesting. The way others view her could tell a complicated but ultimately coming of age story. The old nation's scoffing at this upstart, but barely 150 years later being the ones who will fall short to her might. Her complicated relationship with her government and people as they always wanted a strong nation to help them, but getting this woman. Nyo!America learning she doesn't have to prove her worth to them. They just have to get with the program.
Nyo!America who has had to use blackmail, spying, and some underhand tactics to get things done, because no one gave her control unless she had something over them for the longest time. Her being kind and caring, open minded and warm because everyone deserves the acceptance and love she wasn't given. However she is calculating, strategic, and knows something about everyone and could get things done quicker. However few deserve that. She won't take that choice from people.
Nyo!America who is a workaholic because it's so ingrained in her to give a hundred and twenty percent because she has ro give more than the men in order ro be treated the same. Nyo!America who is positive and appears ditzy. Who generally enjoys being able to lie back and allow people to forget how dangerous she can be. It just makes it all the more fun to remind those later.
My 1 am ramble I might turn into more later.
