Considering what’s been going on with Tumblr and FA password debacles, you may be curious about how passwords are stored. Watch this video to get an idea of how it’s often done (in order from most to least stupid ways), and what you can and cannot do even with access to the database!

Based on what we know, unless FA did something extremely stupid and saved passwords in a really insecure format somewhere else on the site, there shouldn’t be a way to decrypt the hashed passwords. In other words, they can’t take the database, and run your hashed password through a machine, and make it spit out the password it came from. But they can verify passwords! (Is this it? No. How about this? No. This one? Yes!!!) You can imagine this would take some time, even for a computer.

The gist of it is that weak passwords (short, all letters, maybe all lowercase or all uppercase, made of english words, or is on the list of 100 most common passwords) will be the first to go. But if your password is strong (More than 8 characters, contains numbers, letters, upper/lower case, and symbols) you could be dead for decades or centuries before they figure it out.

Of course if they do crack your password, it will no longer work on FA. But guess which password they’re going to try on your email, dropbox, paypal, etc. account…

NOTE: I understand that they can also try and find an existing rainbow table for the hashing if they never salted it, but it seems like they would have been able to do more damage if that were the case.
