'Ello there! Would you care to educate me on why Autism Speaks is bad? (I'm not like, dissing you or trying to start an argument, I just legitimately don't know) Have a good day!

Heres some of the main reasons why autistic people tend to not support them (I think “hate them” would be a more accurate phrasing tbh)

Only 4% of their proceeds go directly to family services. Most goes to advertising and paying themselves. 

Only 2 out of 31 of people on their board of directors are autistic. Over half are non-autistic company CEOs . 

They have no influential autistic people in the upper levels of their organization. The one they did have, John Elder Robinson, quit in 2013 after his input was ignored and disrespected by the organization  

they have repeatedly released stigmatizing content such as the video Autism Every Day (in which a mother talks about how she contemplated killing her autistic daughter and herself, but only decided not to because she also had a non-autistic daughter.  she says this directly in front of her autistic daughter) and I Am Autism (which menacingly claims that autism “works faster than pediatric AIDS, cancer, and diabetes combines”, and that autism will “make sure your marriage fails”) 

 they have plagiarized autistic artists and writers in their resources (pamphlets, advertising, etc.)  

they have repeatedly supported the Judge Rotenberg Center, which uses physical punishment and electric shock to force its residents to “stop acting autistic”.  The center has been indicted of torture by the UN.  Autism Speaks allows the center to advertise at their walks and has not condemned them in any way.  

They frequently block autistic people on social media who do not agree with their practices 

They have used the murders of autistic children (killed by their own parents) to talk about why parents need more support to “alleviate the burdens”  (because not having resources for your disabled kid justifies killing them ya know)

So I heard this story second-hand, many years ago, but the gist was that a friend of a friend lived in what was generally considered a bad neighborhood, because he was a super poor college student and it was what he could afford. He didn’t have any furniture, he just slept on a blanket on the floor and had a milk crate for a chair and like an old wire spool as a table. No TV, nothing in the fridge, no microwave, basically just bare walls and a roof to keep the weather off. So one day he comes home, and there’s a man in his apartment, just standing there, with this look of utter amazement and horror on his face, and he turns to the guy who’s just entered and says, “This your place? ‘cause I broke in to rob you, but shit, man, you ain’t got nothin’. Wait here, I’m’a be right back.” And the burglar left, leaving a puzzled college student alone in his empty apartment. But sure enough, the burglar came back a while later, and brought some friends, and they delivered a table, a couple of chairs, and a small TV. “I think I got you a bed, too, but that might take a couple days.”

So, the poor college student made some friends. And he didn’t ask where they got the stuff.

Ok. Semi rant semi in depth whatever I don’t know.

Christopher Hart.

I could put up with his BLATANT disrespect for other artists, his refusal of any critique, and his immature behavior.

But what gets me the most is, this man knows what he is doing.  And what he is doing is capitalizing of the naiveté of young artists.  He has sold millions of books.

Many of these books contain not only terrible artistic advice, but harmful suggestions on how people should be stylized.  For example, that muscular women aren’t “sexy”, and therefore, you shouldn’t make women too muscular. 

If you are a young artist on this tag, I beg you, do not waste your time.  Do not allow his “lessons” to hold you back.  Because they will.  They are dangerous, and this scares me.

It scares me because young artists are being given misinformation that could take them YEARS to correct.  And they see his profile! They respect him! He is setting an example!

When we are in art class, during a critique, we do not ask our classmates to show us their “professional credentials”.  Just because it is a best seller, does not mean it is professional quality.  See: Fifty Shades of Gray.

Young artists, use your sense please.  Don’t waste your money.  Don’t waste your time.  You don’t need to learn how to “Draw Anime and Manga”.  Learn the anatomy, learn the basics, the real basics.  Then stylize.  Then find you OWN style, not Mr. Harts.  You will be better than him one day if you stick to it.  And if he keeps this crap up, it won’t take you very long at all. Because he has stuck himself in a self righteous rut.  And he is hurting himself, do not let him hurt you. 

I just want to know how he can live with himself, as an artist.  Knowing full well what he is doing.  Knowing full well that he is harming young artists.  Does he care at all?
