“Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to be a cloud?”
"Not really. Why?"
“Sometimes I get too engrossed in things and gravity hates me. It doesn’t happen a lot but when it does, it’s kinda spectacular.”
“Engrossed? Really kid?”
“They all stick. Every person I’ve saved, and every person I haven’t.”
“Yeah, but one of these days the person you don’t save is going to be yourself. There’s a reason we don’t have every Bob, Joe, and Peter trying to be a hero.”
“Woah are you alright? I was just walking and saw them tossing you out…”
“Yeah. I’m drunk not dead.”
“Yeah, well, I kinda have to be. Who the fuck else is going to do it?” And now she’s getting angry. It’s stupid, really, immature, getting angry over the fact that this woman won’t let her walk her home. But Kate doesn’t care at the moment.
“Go sell some cookies somewhere else Girl Scout. You’re not doing anyone any good here. You wanna help someone? Go find someone who needs it.”
“What’s so bad about that?” She’s crossing her arms, frowning.
“You sound like a shitty promotional for an abuse hotline.”
“Look, I just want to make sure you’re okay.” Even if the woman can obviously take care of herself, she’s growing anxious about late at night. She needs to make sure that no one’s getting hurt or worse. Especially the worse part. “Women need to stick together.”
“Look, I’ve made it this far doubt anything else could be worse. Women need to stick together, really?”
He shakes his head because it doesn’t happen that often; he’s too good at his job. But then he nods a bit, the corner of his lip quirking up sheepishly. “I think so, yeah. But you know your limits better than I do, so…tell me to go and I’ll go.”
Jessica actually stood up then, wiping her hands on her jeans and sort of nodding at him. “Come on then, bars are on last call, even if I wasn’t kicked out no one would serve me. Not like I don’t have plenty at home.”
“It kinda is. But you know,” she shrugs, and then she’s still following her. “Listen, I just want to walk you home. I’m committed, okay? Can’t back out now.”
“The fuck you can’t. Look, I’ve got enough to deal with, without some random person following me home and knowing where I live.”
“…I completely understand if you’d rather punch me in the face for offering this but I was wondering if you needed an escort home. It’s after curfew.”
She stared up at him for a moment, “I’m not going to punch you in the face, what the fuck. Does that happen often? Fucking Christ. I don’t need an escort either. Look, would it -- would you feel better if I let you walk me anyway?”
“No. And maybe I’m a little biased because, you know, a litany of super powers making it unlikely that I’m going to end up that way. But I think it’s important to help.”
“Good luck. Powers or not, doesn’t matter how invincible you think you are, something’s going to hurt eventually. Something’s going to stick.”
Oh, okay. Shit. Welp. Kate just stares at the other woman for the moment. “Yeah, no, I can’t really do that. Worry about myself, I mean. Never been able to.”
“Sounds like a personal problem.” Jessica started walking again, not even bothering to look at the girl because honestly, she was just tired. She was tired and she wanted another drink and the buzzing of the cheap neon bar signs all around her made her feel like there were flies in the air. “You should go work on that, somewhere else.”
He walked up quietly and slowly, frowning down at her. Part of him thought that he should offer to help her up, but he didn’t know this woman, and he had a general rule against extending offers of physical assistance to drunk people. “…Ma’am?”
Jessica groaned and honestly considered just laying there. In the trash. Just laying there. Then she sat up because fuck it. “Yeah?” And then she stopped to take stock of the guy in front of her, he...looked like he was doing as well as she felt.
“And maybe I can agree with that in some ways. I mean, it’s certainly not all glamorous. Sometimes people don’t even say thank you. But I just don’t think it’s about the glamour and the thank-yous. I have the power to help. Wouldn’t it be worse if I sat around and didn’t?”
“Wouldn’t it be worse if you woke up one day, beat to fuck, life a shithole all because you gave it up for some assholes who didn’t even say thank you?”
Kate snorts a laugh. “Okay, call me a weirdo for trying to help out someone. I’ve been called worse. And that’s totally fine, you can be alone when I see you home. I’m not just going to leave you alone while you’re walking home. What if you pop up in the newspaper tomorrow? ‘Drunk woman murdered by some asshole!’ And I could’ve stopped it, but nope, you wouldn’t let me. So you know, you can get mad at me all you want, but at least let me see you home.”
Jessica looked her dead in the eye and drank the rest of the bottle she had before throwing it into the trash. She didn’t even hesitate, let her fist slam into the metal of a streetlight the whole thing shook and the metal dented. “Worry about yourself.”
“I know you’re being sarcastic. But your opinion matters.”
“You want my opinion? Being a hero is bullshit, but if you can pull it off and your life isn’t a train wreck, go for it.”
She follows after her, keeping a close eye on her. “You know, it’s always said that if you go out drinking you should go with a buddy. Especially if you’re a woman. There’s some fucking weirdos out.”
“Yeah, I know. You’re one of them, I can take care of myself alright? I don’t need a responsibili-buddy or whatever shit you’re trying to push at me. If I needed someone to hold my hand every time I drank I’d never be alone. And I like being alone.”
