What if Ticket Taker was Being Petty?
What if TT putting his hands on us wasn’t a power move on just us but also to Pierrot? Maybe it was also a petty display meant to “get back” at Pierrot for how he behaved earlier that day.
This observation came from a convo I was having with my mutual @flysoji!
If you’ve seen my previous theories, you know that I strongly believe that Ticket Taker closely parallels the Pantalone stock character from Commedia dell’arte. A hallmark of Pantalone’s personality is his pettiness and grudges.
Ticket Taker is a dominate-coded character. Physical contact plays a significant role in establishing power dynamics with characters like him, often serving to signal hierarchy or assert authority. Touching is intentional with him. It’s not overdone, but purposeful. Also notice how (in his tent) he makes contact from behind, where we’re most vulnerable and he is unseen in the shadows.
Considering that TT values hierarchy, I imagine he also values the troupe’s hierarchy and sees himself high up in its class. Pierrot would be below him in that ranking.
Earlier that day, Pierrot committed what Ticket Taker could have seen as three offenses:
1. Speaking
2. Attempting to deceive
3. Touching with the intention of restraint
Later in Ticket Taker’s tent, Pierrot cracks one of the mirrors. Likely being a fourth offense.
We’re the first person Pierrot has ever given his ticket to, and in doing so, he has essentially marked us as his.
What better way to assert some level of authority and retaliation than by touching what’s his but in your domain? Right in front of him?
But Ticket Taker can’t hurt us. I assume it’s because our red ticket protects us (at least from physical harm). But remember that TT doesn’t need to physically inflict pain to be effective.
I think TT was also petty in another way but this one takes a bit of reading between the lines. It’s when he mentions that “he doesn’t bite.”
When Ticket Taker says “What an impressive trick,” he’s likely saying it in a sassy, mocking tone due to the italics. Or at least SOME kind of emphasis.
He also says “I don’t bite” in italics so he may be emphasizing it in a mocking tone also.
At this point he’s well aware of Pierrot’s presence in the tent. Even if we choose to obey him, TT already assumes that we’ve been to each mirror when we go to his (which, again, lets him know that at least Pierrot is lurking. He still broke the mirror).
Just as with Pierrot’s, however, Ticket Taker assumes that we’ve also seen Harlequin’s mirror, whose reflection he makes bite us.
Like he did to her.
This is also where I can see TT holding some sort of grudge towards Harlequin.
But regardless of whether Harlequin is in Ticket Taker’s tent with us or not (which depends on if we show even a little interest in him), this assumption is likely still made and referenced.
The reason I mention these points is that Ticket Taker might be making a jab at Pierrot, Harlequin, or both when he says “I don’t bite.”
Because, they do.
With that line, I interpret Ticket Taker basically saying:
“I’m not like HIM. I don’t bite like HE does.”
OR
“I’m not like THEM. I don’t bite like THEY do.”
Because you can’t have one without the other.
Which is a petty jab when he knows that Pierrot is right behind him.
UPDATE: I’ve seen many people mention how TT was the one to first offer us his ticket. And if we fancy Pierrot he takes TT’s ticket and does a magic act to instead give us his instead. That could be another reason why he’s being petty lol, we were his first.

This was a kind of sweet dashboard coincidence.
Fun Facts
Lately, I’ve been taking a lot of notes about the game’s backstory it kind of helps me keep the characters’ behavior consistent, if that makes sense to you. So I thought I’d share some fun facts!
About the circus travels:
Jester and Ticket Taker always keep an itinerary with the circus’s next stops (though they do take suggestions from the others). They’re the ones who handle most of the research. So, how does it work when the circus moves to a new place?
If they don’t speak the local language, they learn it. They spend some time just studying and observing the new culture before setting up the show, and each of them has a role in that process.
This is usually when they can stay in hotels/inns (which I mentioned before) to relax and do some field research.
Here’s what each one does in those first few days: Jester has an incredible talent for languages. In the first days, he gathers books and newspapers to start learning before he passes it on to the others.
Ticket Taker visits local places in more casual clothes he learns best by observing and interacting.
The Doctor is usually the least seen in public, and if he goes out, it’s only at night. At first, he just wanders around the hotel and nearby areas until he’s familiar with the new environment.
Pierrot goes shopping for supplies, usually dressed casually, often accompanied by Ticket Taker or Harlequin.
Harlequin practically roams through the whole city. He enjoys watching the daily routine of the place and testing out what he can do before returning to the hotel.
I’m not sure if you guys enjoy these kinds of fun facts, but here they are.
These are colored sketches I had to make to help me with the new sprites. A lot of people asked to see the full outfit so here it is!
we know that in order for Pierrot to stop loving us, we must try to act, because even an attempt to kill him will not make him give up his feelings.
So, personally, I wonder what kind of actions will make him doubt that we are the ones?
Oh, my! One more question! what would the troupe do if the MC turned Pierrot against them? Still, Pierrot is quite trusting and receptive, I think the person he is madly in love with can influence his opinion. So yes, in fact, I wonder what he will choose, his love or his "family" 👀
(ahem, you're just smart, I'm glad that Someone got a little better and you're helping him! Good luck to you, mheh :D)
Well, you brought up some really interesting points, and unfortunately I can’t go into too much detail in my answers here, ouo" For Pierrot to truly doubt the MC, terrible things and controversial decisions must be made. That’s a good question which side would Pierrot be on? Is that even possible? To corrupt Pierrot like that? Wow, that sounds so sad... doesn’t it? Maybe I have plans for a situation like that >.>"
Omg I am IN LOVE with how you draw human Harlequin, may I please get more...?🥹🥹
That's an old doodle I drew before and I never shared hehe 🙏😚💕💕💕
Hello! I discovered your game via YouTube and it hit my hyper-fixation for both horror and the jester aesthetic. As I watched the gameplay, I went from mildly interested to deeply invested!
When I found your Tumblr page, I binge-read it, eager to learn more about your game (the phrase "we shall watch your career with great interest" lingered as I read). As I've read questions and answers about the game, I have developed theories of my own like the mystery-loving gremlin I am! I have lingering for about a month now, and I eagerly await what is in store!
Like my name suggests, I am a bit of a fandom hermit and I mostly just watch from afar. However, my fixation on this game has given the motivation/courage to engage a little bit.
That being said, I (finally) came up with three questions to ask out of curiosity.
1. How would the circus members react to a MC that used to be a detective/private investigator, but quit due to personal matters?
Ex: Wanting to protect family, assumed dead, etc.
2. (Assuming the mc is close enough to pierrot or harlequin to know that their monsters) How would the circus members react to the MC asking what species they evolved from/if they come from a divergent evolution line out of sheer, innocent (and possibly nerdy) curiosity
3. (This might be weird, depending on what questions you find unusual)
How would Pierrot or Harlequin react if MC said they wanted to have their babies or start a family? (I'm a full on Pierrot simp, but I included Harlequin for all the Harlequin fans)
If you find this ask among the hundreds of asks you already have, thank you for allowing me to ramble on how much this game has captured my interest!
Hello! I’m really happy to hear you’re enjoying it so much! And I’ve definitely seen you comment a few times, haha.
I’ve always been more of the “watch from a distance” type too, but I’m just now starting to get more involved. I don’t want anyone to think the game is on hold or anything like that I actually work on it every single day. And since I’m a fan of some works myself, I know how happy it makes me when the creator shares updates so I try to be present for you all too.
They would definitely be aware of that. They’d realize they might need to be more careful when the MC comes to the circus.
That question would feel very strange to them. They're not used to someone calmly accepting things like that. All of them would be expecting the MC to either pull out a knife or run away screaming.
That’s still a pretty uncertain topic. None of them really plan on having children mostly because the way they live is too dangerous. Pierrot would be completely confused if the MC said something like that. He’d blush and overthink it way too much, since it’s something that’s never even crossed his mind. At first, he’d be totally unable to respond. Harlequin would question the MC’s desire, bombarding them with a whirlwind of slightly more logical questions, trying to understand why the MC would want to build a family with someone like him.
You see for them, their current understanding of “family” is: The Circus. The circus is their home, it’s their family. They protect each other, take care of each other, and run away together when necessary. They do understand the human concept of family but it still feels very distant from their reality. So the idea of “starting a family with someone” is something they don’t fully grasp yet.
I hope I explained that well! I know it might sound a bit confusing.
Cooking for Circus member pierrot.
Machine translated English, hopefully without making the semantics too weird.
I really wonder what it would be like if pierrot had a little trouble with the Harlequin in the area of cooking that he is good at.
Both of you are lovely! I hope everyone can be happy, even if there may be a little friction.
I love this, they’re so cute!
The Freak Circus is a wonderful new visual novel available on Itch.io by @nekoboydreams
I wondered what these characters would sound like and couldn't help but to try my hand (voice?) at voicing some of the scenes in the game for kicks and giggles-- for warning, it does use fem terms, but I'd happily make versions with masc/neutral terms if someone genuinely wanted!
It mostly spawned from me and my girlfriend joking that maybe Pierrot's voice sounds a little uncanny or 'off' and is part of why he can't talk (even when there's plenty of context against that headcanon) but it was nonetheless fun to try! :D
If you enjoyed these snippets then go! Play the game and support the creator's awesome project!
I love how you did their voice intonations! Especially Harlequin’s venomous way of speaking I loved hearing each one of them!
