Words, Resurface

Here's one man from Karangasem who turns ecological consciousness into deep artworks.

He reuses pages from old magazines, books, and printed matter, reshaping text that once carried information into surface visual layers through intricate textures and details.

Nothing is erased. Every layer stays visible, creating new life from the noise of memory and human stories into something that resides in a room.

Meet Suarimbawa “Dalbo” (ig @dalbosuarimbawa). The artist who brings chronicles into dimension.

Alam Taslim x siji, 2026

This collaboration creates one size genderfluid casual piece crafted from breathable unbleached cotton, preserving the fabric’s natural character while minimizing unnecessary processing. Featuring hand drawing in water-based ink and fabric paint of monster Igor, reflecting Alam Taslim meticulous drawing and imagination.

Alam Taslim (ig @apel.jpg) and siji speak about life and human beings through two forms that mirror one another. One through ig @igorsatumangkok and the other shows up in garments. Still, both share the same intention: to tell stories, to express what they see and feel, and to observe life as it unfolds. Meeting in the middle, these reflections take form as something to contemplate; a reminder that life doesn’t always have to feel heavy. It indeed can be light, witty, and quietly amusing.

It’s been a while since siji joined a pop-up, and this time it returns through Kumpul, a gathering of works shaped by different hands, processes, and collaborations.

Featuring a series of pieces and prototypes with varied materials, artworks, and techniques, this moment reflects what siji has always held close: every individual carries a story. Different paths, different rhythms. And when they meet, something meaningful unfolds.

Title & year: Dipandang Sekedar, 2025

Medium & dimensions: Costume installation, dimension 130x80 cm

Material : calico, cotton, nylon, ceramic, metal, wood, plastic, air clay, sharpie.

Techniques: sewing, embroidery, hand stitch, sculpting, hand drawing.

Concept and relevance to the theme Food: Artificial Intelligence (AI) yang sedang bercerita mengenai pergeseran arti makanan, dan menunjukkan bentuk bagaimana makanan dipandang saat ini.

Karya ini berangkat dari pertanyaan tentang pergeseran arti makanan yang diajukan kepada kecerdasan buatan.

Jawaban AI tersebut kemudian disulam langsung pada gaun blacu, mengubah teks digital menjadi proses manual yang lambat dan personal.

Tulisan ini membahas bagaimana makanan kini tidak lagi sekadar sumber energi, tetapi juga simbol gengsi, konten media sosial, dan tren, sementara makna makanan tradisional perlahan memudar.

Gaun menjadi medium yang “dipakai” tubuh, menunjukkan bagaimana perubahan makna ini hadir dan dinormalisasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Kehadiran objek makanan “palsu” menyoroti jarak antara tampilan dan isi , sesuatu yang terlihat familiar, tetapi kehilangan fungsi dan makna aslinya. Karya ini mengajak melihat kembali bagaimana teknologi dan gaya hidup modern membentuk cara kita memaknai makanan.

The life stage where we are caught between what was and what will be. It is the discomfort of shedding an old skin before the new one has fully formed.

Is a Passage of people from one status to another, initiation ceremonies in which an outsider is brought into the group. This includes marriage and initiation ceremonies that move one from the status of an outsider to an insider.

Title: Bangkung, 2022

In spirituality, liminality is the sacred threshold between the known and the unknown, the material and the spiritual. It is the in-between space where transformation becomes possible — a moment of surrender, unknowing, and deep inner transition. the liminal phase is where old beliefs may dissolve, ego structures soften, and a more expanded consciousness begins to emerge.

People who are socially marginalized largely lose access to social opportunities. They may become stigmatized and often face negative public attitudes. Their chances to contribute to society may be limited, and they may develop low self-confidence and self-esteem.

The silence wasn't empty; it was full. Full of potential, of insights, of a deeper connection to self. The chatter quieted down, and in its place, a sense of calm emerged. It wasn't always easy. There were times when the silence felt uncomfortable, even unsettling. But learned to be patient, to observe the discomfort without judgment, and eventually, it would pass. And in those moments of stillness, discovered a quiet strength, a sense of peace that hadn't known existed.

This central point, often referred to as the soul, the deeper self, or the transcendent self, is a constant, accessible, and pure part of our existence. It is the resonance of our true nature, unfiltered by the noise of the external world.

Through clothing as mediums, this collection invites people to contemplate their own inner axis mundi. By exploring themes of connection, consciousness, and transcendence, we hope to inspire a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe.
