My friends on the boat have been introducing me to Hazbin Hotel and I’m now so unwell about it… all I want to do is look at fanart of best boy ever Sir Pentious but my friends have warned me that tumblr is rife with spoilers and are working so hard to keep me blissfully ignorant and spoiler-free ♥️

After finishing Kokoro, I can hardly believe it’s by the same guy who wrote silly goofy Botchan. It’s been a few years since I read Botchan so maybe I’m misremembering how funny it is, but I genuinely recall giggling out loud bc of it. Kokoro is heavy intense tho goddamn… in a good way though. I think it might be my new favourite book tbh

Actually I can’t stop thinking about this book so I’m just gonna lay out all the things that I loved about this book here:

1. The framing narrative.

Since the book begins from the 1st person perspective of the narrator, there is so much mystery created around the character of Sensei. We are fed tantalising hints about his true nature, his past, his secret sins - yet never quite enough to satisfy our curiosity. What crime could he have committed that led him to isolate himself from the world? And what atrocities had the world committed unto him that could have rendered him so hateful of humanity? This first part of the novel left me with so many questions I was compelled to keep reading. That being said, the narrative hooks certainly aren’t the only reason to keep reading - the narrator character has a very interesting and heartfelt story of his own. This brings me onto the next point I loved.

2. Historical significance

As someone who lived in Nagasaki for a while and also hold Yokohama dear to my heart (ty bsd lol), Japan’s sakoku period is of great interest to me. Lately, I’ve been reading up about the arrival of the Black Ships, the end of the 200 year isolation, and the seismic paradigm shifts that rewrote Japanese life in the Meiji era. Natsume Soseki lived in this time of radical change and Kokoro illustrates the cultural tensions that characterised this point in history. Though it’s a pivotal moment in every part of the novel, the narrator’s story is particularly closely enmeshed with the death of the Meiji era and I really felt I had a deeper understanding of this period after reading the book.

3. Pathetic Fallacy meets Mono no Aware

Nature has always been a big part of my life personally, so I’ve always loved the Victorian literary concept of pathetic fallacy - ie nature reflecting the internal, emotional states of the characters. Natsume Soseki lived in England, studied English literature intensely, and eventually became an English lit professor back in Japan, so he was undoubtedly familiar with pathetic fallacy. Then again, the examples of it in Kokoro have a uniquely Japanese feel to them - the characters’ inner states are sometimes reflected onto objects too (such as a university graduation scroll) and they often shift with the passing seasons, mirroring summer cicada songs, cherry blossoms, autumn foliage, and frostbitten evergreen trees. Perhaps it’s the characters who imitate the transient seasons in the end?

I’m sure I could find more things to write but it’s approaching half 2 in the morning and I’ve got cherry blossom viewing to enjoy tomorrow, so I’d better get some rest. Who knows though, maybe I’ll keep adding to this list :)

I’m currently reading Kokoro by Soseki Natsume and I keep thinking how much Dazai must’ve loved it. There’s been at least 4 suicides already! Also there’s a lot of chat about being human and acting human. The character of Sensei wrestles with feelings of misanthropy and feeling as though he doesn’t deserve to live.

Additionally, aside from all the parallels with the themes in Dazai’s prose and some of the larger themes in BSD, Kokoro is also just a beautiful book. I particularly love all the pathetic fallacy - objects mimic the situations that characters find themselves in and the plants that illustrate the passing seasons also play a large part in the narrative.
