Eyelash Curler
The invention of the eyelash curler came about between 1920’s to the 1940’s. Eyelash curling was not of great concern up until women were in moving pictures, as well as the women dying their eyebrows and eyelashes they wanted them to be more visible.
Tweezer
Tweezers are known to have been used in asian countries, consisting of two strips of metal moulded together, where they were potentially for the use of catching lice. This instrument was later used as a beauty tool, as a tool of hair removal for example the eyebrows.
Eyebrow Razor
Was a modernised version of a normal mens razor, simply designed for women as a means to remove unwanted hair they had on the face, neck and anywhere else. Marketing a woman holding a mans razor and shaving was deemed unfeminine therefore this creation of the razor for ‘women’ was suddenly deemed a more acceptable hair removal tool. Marketing it that it smooths the skin, removes impurities, improves skin texture, evens pigmentation, removes fine facial hair.
Razor
Safety razors have been known to exist since at least 1876, which gained major popularity during World War I when the U.S. military started issuing shaving kits to its servicemen: in 1918. Razors were originally designed for men to be able to shave their beards and was later used and advertised for women for all over the body hair removal. Minimal hair on women was highly in fashion and highly exercised in post war culture.
Menstrual Cup
The first prototypes of menstrual cups, also known as catamenial sacks, were patented in 1860's and 1870’s - but never made it to the market. The first modern menstrual cups were invented in 1937 by American actress Leona Chalmers, designed with latex rubber, which soon became a scarce material and production stopped. Menstrual cups were reintroduced in the late 1980's with the creation of "The Keeper." This cup is made from latex rubber and is still sold today. The 21st century new material medical grade silicone, was integrated into the design.
Jade Roller
Jade rollers date back to the seventh century and come from China where Jade is known as the “stone from heaven”. They were used along with gua sha (a scraping tool) to invigorate the skin and are part of Chinese traditional medicine. When used properly jade rollers are proven to increase blood circulation facilitating the removal of toxins, reducing inflammation and puffiness and can reduce under eye circles - lead to tightened pores, and reduction of fine lines. Effectively being marketed to make women look younger or “keep their youth for longer”
Waxstrip
Waxing originated in Egypt in 1150 BC, the bodies of women were smooth and hairless, it first originated in Middle Eastern countries in order to reduce parasites, fleas, lice and body odour which were very common when living in such hot conditions. For aesthetic reasons waxing was later commercially introduced and manufactured in the 1930’s in France. Specifically marketed towards women and quickly became the choice of woman all over the world for removing hair.
Botox Needle
Clostridium botulinum (Botox) was first discovered in 1895, it was later officially used in 1980’s. Botox wasn’t originally created for anti wrinkle purposes, it was made for treating strabismus (crosses eyes) when being tested on monkeys they came to the conclusion it also prevented wrinkles, hence its use became to popular.
Beauty blender
Was created in 2003, by makeup artist Rea Ann Silva who was looking for a way to make makeup look good on high-definition television. She started with cutting up sponges for the application of makeup and later created this latex-free makeup sponge that's shaped like an egg that gave makeup an airbrushed finish.

magazine idea
just sketching up ideas of different ways I would like to potentially design the magazine with different images that I have taken and also giving inspiration for further shoots I can do.
the series of images I have put together for my folio in my pilot project. These are the edited pictures from the shoot, I am happy with the images, however still think there is more that can be done to help the project further develop.
some of the images from shoot 9
props I used
- razors
- marigold gloves
- doctors gloves with syringe
- menstrual cup
- wax strip
- tweezers
- cotton wool balls
all objects relating to femininity and looking at how I can photograph them and convey a message. As in both western and eastern cultures beauty ideals have become a high fashion, where maintenance and up keep is vital. I wanted to capture this epidemic in an abstract/minimal manner. Looking at the odd instruments that we have to use and how the concept of consumerism and beauty has formed such popularity in daily life.
