how life feels. sometimes it’s simpler to return to earth, to fall to water, even when it’s the overwhelm of soft and crinkled emotions that push us there
Sweet Juice of Static Things, 2015 //
a work from what seems like so long ago. I had no idea what this piece was going to turn out like in the process. I started with casting oranges, focusing on details of the skin, catching a static moment in its ripening and softer deterioration, but after running out of plaster and with a deadline coming up, the piece took an unintended and interesting turn, highlighting what I love best-- scrappiness of using all parts and things, leaving nothing behind and finding a way to incorporate excess into a simple ecosystem, reminiscent of how a mess of citizens shifts into a rhythm of community, perfect in its singing clamor.
Looking back, this piece relates so clearly to the concepts I respond to now in my design work and business: remembering the vibrance and utter juiciness of the nature and her offerings when enjoyed without interfering, while calling out the static backwardness of sanitized ideas that get in the way of it. Think of a ripe farm or home-grown tomato, for example. All one needs to do to enjoy its gift is to pick it off the vine and let its juice pop in the mouth-- sans any plastic wrap or packaging or sprays intended to take away visual irregularities.
We are past this time of plastic wrap. Time to remember a world beyond artificial flavorings and pulp-free juices.
