Good morning
Fucking hell.
This disrespects the characters, the story, the author, the entire point of the book, and every single trans Discworld fan.
Context, for my non Discworld followers: Monstrous Regiment is a book which plays with the trope of "girl dresses as not to join the army", in which the protagonist slowly realises she's not the only one; all the other new recruits of her squad are similarly disguising themselves. Shenanigans ensue, and at the end of the book it's revealed a lot of the military higher ups are actually women with a facade of maleness, putting on the part so they can do their duty.
Sergeant Jackrum is also one of the people who ran away as a girl to join the army, but unlike the others he doesn't wear a facade. It's entirely himself. He is canonically a trans man. He doesn't want to leave the military and return to civilian life, cos he doesn't want to re enter the closet and live as a woman, and his squad's like oi mate you're literally sergeant fuckin Jackrum, there ain't a kid in this kingdom who hasn't heard of you in all your decades of service. Return to the family you left behind, the kid you birthed doesn't need to know you're trans, you can just say you're the guy who fathered that kid. Go be a grandpa and be happy.
To misgender him in any way is spitting in the face of the author, fans, and story. It's upsetting.
I also noted when I listened to the most recent Monstrous Regiment audiobook that they used the misgendering version for the recording.
I just did some quick research, though, and it looks like they may have gone back and fixed it? I'll have to listen to the audiobook again to see if that is indeed the case.
EDIT: Nope, still the wrong pronouns. However, in my search I also came across something interesting: there's two versions up on Audible. One released 2/23/23, published by Transworld Digital and one released 9/25/23, published by Harper. Both exactly the same length, both with the same narrator/cast. The Harper edition is the one that I have. But I think, the Transworld Digital one is the correct one.
Simply because I had to use address trickery to purchase Nightwatch's audiobook back in 2023, and it, too, was published by Transworld Digital. I think I'm going to spend a little extra money soon and buy that version and see if it's correct.
EDIT 2: Yep. Transworld Digital does not misgender Jackrum, but you have to spoof the address to make Audible think you're living in the UK to buy it.
Covid-19 killed a whole lot of people, changed the world, and gave everyone still alive a lot of trauma in the year 2020. But we don't talk about that as much.
It's 2026. Two of the biggest movies this year are Iron Lung, and Project: Hail Mary. Both of these movies involve a scruffy guy who must attempt to save humanity from an overwhelming existential threat, while being confined to a small, isolated, self-contained space.
Unable to visit or receive aid from others. Rationing the scant resources, because it's unsafe to leave.
Trapped on the ship. Trapped on the submarine. For the good of humanity.
We're all having a normal one, huh.

Drawing Simon starter pack:
simon falls first AND falls harder btw, grace just trips over him and doesn’t get up
You… you don’t even know… you sent me down here to die and you don’t even know my name?
Iron Lung (2026) dir. Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach
has this been done already? am i embarrassingly late to the party?
Simon's mutations mean Erid's gravity has no impact on him — and they don't know it, but he can actually survive fine in the atmosphere, too.
Meanwhile, the starvation and loss of muscle mass means Grace is even more susceptible to Erid's intense gravity. By the time they meet, Grace is already using a wheelchair to move around.
Simon's there four years before Grace's body gives up. The Eridians have no choice but to place him in stasis until they find a solution.
Simon's life the last four years has been a beautiful dream. For the first time in a long time, he's safe. He has people — well, one person and multiple aliens — who care about him. They find him funny! They seek out his company!
There's always food. When Grace finds out he's not from Earth and has never had cake or spaghetti or french fries, Grace moves heaven and Erid to make those foods for him. Simon cries the first time he tastes strawberry shortcake.
Simon gets to see trees and plants and can pick fruits and vegetables from the greenhouse.
On his dark days, though, he feels undeserving. Grace and the Eridians have given him everything, and he can give them nothing in return.
He can fix things, but he's no engineer. He's not able to teach the Eridians science they haven't discovered and change their society. He's just a freeloader.
But then Grace is put in stasis, and Adrian wonders aloud why it is that Simon isn't impacted by Erid's gravity. They ask for a sample of his blood, and Simon doesn't hesitate — he'll bleed himself dry to see Grace smile again.
And they discover a lot of things. How Simon was made less human by The Blood Ocean, but how it's this terrible thing that happened to him that will save Grace, that will allow him to thrive in Erid the way Simon has.
He's been treated less than human his whole life, and then he finds a place where he's respected and valued, and it's there that he finds that he's now the Less Than Human he's always been treated as.
Except no one even CARES how human he is or isn't, and they all love him just the same, and also he SAVED Grace, and Grace wakes up and smiles still a bit tiredly, and he's THANKFUL for The Blood Ocean, and that's a whole 'nother can of worms, and this whole thing has basically meant having about ten cans of worms he needs to deal with, except Grace is SAFE and that supersedes everything else, and — shit, is he in love with Grace?

In honor of pride month and the iron lung movie being available to stream now, here’s some yurified Bloody Mary
I love how the biggest space guys on tumblr right now, Dr. Captain Ryland Grace and Simon the Convict, are played by Mark “send me to space I don’t care if I don’t come back” Iplier, and Ryan “oh my god please don’t send me to space. Why are you sending me to space?!?” Gosling.
I just think that’s hilarious
