Look. I really did not intend to hurt your feelings. Your tumblr is the one place that you are most active and I wanted you to answer my question directly so I didn’t see a problem with sending it via your asks because I didn’t and tbh still don’t really see it as outright mean or hateful. I will definitely admit that I could have phrased it differently but the overall point of what I said is still a valid critique.

I didn’t appreciate the way that you completely dismissed my entire ask as rude and hateful and said that I just don’t understand storytelling. I also really don’t appreciate the fact that you didn’t publicly post my other ask saying that I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings and just continued letting all of your other fans think that I’m some horrible and hateful bully because Im not.

I am a fan of your work. I own multiple books and I have been avidly reading heartstopper since like part 2. And I also completely understand that you are putting out FREE ($0.00) content for us to enjoy but I don’t think that just automatically means that we as fans are no longer allowed to criticize or question your creative choices. And as a content creator of any kind, you have to be able to accept criticism. you said that you don’t mind when people criticize your works and yet when I voiced a valid criticism about an aspect of your work, I was demonized by dozens of people.

I apologize for coming across as rude because that’s literally not at all how I meant to sound in my ask otherwise I wouldn’t have asked it. I didn’t realize that what I said would be so controversial and considered unwarranted and unsolicited hate. But I also think it’s kind of unfair that I’m being accused of publicly attacking you and essentially bullying you when you didn’t have to post my ask to your public blog if it bothered you so much and criticism is not bullying.

And to all of Alice’s fans who said they were gonna fight me: first of all, no you’re not lmao. And second, it you only ever praise someone’s work and say that it’s perfect and they don’t need to change anything ever, you guys are actually doing them a huge disservice and are active agents in preventing them from being able to actually grow as a content creator, an artist, and a writer.

Hey, I think your thoughts on the pacing of Heartstopper are pretty valid, although I’ve never really looked at it that way. I do think she overreacted with her response though. Everyone makes mistakes, maybe she’s just having a bad day. But maybe I’m wrong and ask boxes are just for praises

Thank you. I genuinely did not think my question would be viewed as hateful and that’s why I was so shocked that she and others responded the way that they did. And I’m willing to admit that maybe saying that the pacing seemed unnecessarily dragged out similar to a sports anime wasn’t the most kind thing I could have possibly said but also I wouldn’t go as far to say it was outright mean. If other people are happy with it that’s totally fine especially since she’s creating content that costs $0.00 for us to view! But I don’t think that it means we should never be allowed to criticize it or question her creative choices as fans and as a content creator she absolutely needs to be more receptive to it and her response in my opinion was extremely childish

I totally agree with your comments on the pacing of Heartstopper. And I agree that you have a right to criticize any creative content you want. Whether you were rude or not is up to interpretation. Maybe Alice should be better at taking criticism too. But!! her inbox isn't a place to send unsolicited criticism. Post it on your blog, post it on goodreads, etc that's fair game!

Facts! I didn’t realize my criticism would be so controversial and seen as hate so I didnt see a problem with asking her on her public blog which is why I did it! Plus I wanted her elaboration on why she made that creative choice. Obviously whether or not my criticism is rude is subjective but I do think her initial response, her allowing people to call me a bully lmao, and the fact that she refused to post my second ask saying I didn’t deliberately mean to hurt her feelings but that I didn’t appreciate her saying that I don’t understand storytelling and then had the audacity to say that I “sent her another rude message” is incredibly childish.

hey uh ur opinion on heartstopper's pacing is valid, ur allowed to have criticism, and criticism isnt inherently "bullying", but intention doesnt matter as much as the impact right now. if u came off as rude then u were rude. i mean u literally said "unnecessarily dragged out", which sounded pretty rude to me! if u really intended for ur question to be genuine there was nothing stopping u from sending an ask clearing the air, instead of refusing to take criticism for ur own unwarranted critique

Hey so that’s totally fair! I actually have already addressed that I understand that she was upset about the way that I phrased it and she’s well within her right to feel that way! But you have to understand that as a content creator you have to be able to accept criticism especially from fans. The Paris arc was so incredibly long and there were only a handful of events that were key to the overall plot of the story. If that’s something that you like then that’s totally fine! But in my opinion it’s bad storytelling. And I actually did send her another ask saying that I didn’t deliberately mean to hurt her feelings and that I’m a fan of heartstopper but that her calling me rude and saying I don’t understand storytelling while simultaneously saying she can accept criticism was childish and apparently that was “too rude” for her to post publicly.

hey, I understand where you are coming from but I do wish you would take a bit of your own advice and accept your own criticism. It's valid to feel that way about pacing! But what's not so kind is to call attention to it, in an unkind way, especially when it was never asked for in the first place. Storytelling is a very subjective experience, you know? I get that it wasn't your intention! But it might help to listen to those that are saying that unasked for criticism is actually rude. Cheers!

Okay but see also I was asking a genuine question about why she decided to pace the story the way she did because to me it’s just unnecessarily drawn out and she called me rude and said “that’s storytelling” instead of saying anything about why she decided to pace the story that way which is honestly just petty and childish. I totally get what you’re saying that she thought the criticism was unwarranted but also as a content creator you have to be able to accept criticism and if she thought that what I said was so outlandishly mean and rude then clearly she cannot.

I actually think that it was a very valid question and the fact that all the people attacked you and they called you rude just for a critic that they could have explained so you could understand better is just...upsetting

I think what’s most upsetting is that I actually really like heartstopper! I think the characters are very interesting and compelling and it’s so frustrating to see that she really just can’t take criticism and that she was agreeing with people essentially calling me a bully and for what!!!!!?? Fans are allowed to criticize your work!!! It’s literally part of being a content creator.

hi. why did you feel the need to offer criticism to someone via a public ask on a blog? i think you at least could have done it via dm. i think the reason your ask wasn't recieved well was because it was unwarranted and unasked for, and done publicly, making it rude. alice never asked for concrit, nor does she have the need to pace her books to your specific liking. for ex, i found the pacing excellent so far. places like goodreads are for fans to post concrit if they feel the need, for readers

Okay hi so I don’t think my ask was rude which I why I didn’t feel like it was necessary to ask via dms. Criticism is not inherently rude or mean or bullying and fans are allowed to criticize any aspect of someone’s work regardless of how hard they worked on it. I understand that Alice wanted to include lots of things on the Paris trip but in all actuality, there were only a small handful of events that happened that were key to the overall plot and the updates spanned well over an entire year and that is bad storytelling. Charlie’s eating disorder has been hinted at since part one and we are only just now seeing anything out of it and it’s part 6. That is incredibly slow pacing and I’m allowed to be unhappy with it and ask her why she decided to pace it that way. She chose to respond to my ask publicly on her blog call me rude and it’s honestly not my fault that she actually cannot take criticism like she said.
