I cannot believe degendering pregnancy is a controversial topic. idk how it is in the west, but when I went to a doctor, told her that I'm pregnant and I needed to do blood tests and many other things she laughed at me and said smth like: "you a 180cm grownass man pregnant??? honey, pregnancy is for those who are women. if you're a mentally ill trans then you can visit a psychologist instead", and I told her that I'm intersex but she was like "not pregnant, *h slurs* are sterile and can't get pregnant, especially if they're a man like you are." I saw 6 different doctors and I was mocked by all of them, until my partner somehow made one of them listen, and she saw that I really was pregnant and being intersex didn't make me "sterile." if pregnancy was degendered and was replaced with neutral language I'd have easier time accessing healthcare. and now that I did, the doctors are still confused and they're like "yeahhh, they never taught us how to treat defects like you so let us treat you like we would treat *normal pregnancy.*" first of all why are you calling a human being a defect, and secondly, do you treat EVERY pregnant woman you see the same way? there are different kinds of pregnancies. not every pregnancy is the same. different people have different complications and needs. why do you treat intersex pregnancy as something impossible that cannot be helped and monitored. especially for pregnant intersex men (or phenotypical "man", idk how to say it). the medical system makes you feel horrible for being intersex and pregnant intersex man. they'll either deny your healthcare or they'll abuse you and force you into womanhood even when you never lived it.

Imagine how surreal it must have been for Grandmother Silk to be plummeted down into the void, surviving only on mother's adrenaline and then her murderer arrives and she's powerless to do anything except watch and scream as this pale rival attacks her child.

Did she think Hornet would kill Lace? For surely this daughter had proven herself more pale than weaver and would gladly slay an obstacle to her taking Pharloom as her own.

Because that's the nature of pale beings: to dominate. Grandmother Silk must know that because she embodied it yet what if as she watches Hornet attack she sees the void be battered off Lace until finally her only loved child falls-

And instead of slay Lace, Hornet cradles her, and Grandmother Silk realises this daughter has taken after her Grandmother for her urge to dominate has been bested by her urge to mother?

On seeing Hornet in the void, was it relief she felt, rather than dread?

obligatory pretentious bullshit blast + other assorted trivia things bc there's not actually a lot of pretentious bullshit hidden in here:

the title of this fic used to be something else. but i stumbled into gms referring to lace as bird boned while i was scouring to site my sources and grew attached to it as a concept. i like that it can kind of be a phrase that refers to them both, in a way

idk if this is a thing outside of black households, but it was very important to me that i made a reference to phantom's skin being ashy. black skin gets ashy really easily, and its very common to refer to someone with ashy skin (especially in the contexts of a child) as someone "walking around like nobody loves [them]". lace going out of her way to imagine lotion on phantom's skin is something deeper than the superficial concept of it all. its a burning desire to care for them in little, meticulous ways.

it wasn't originally going to be exactly 10 years since phantom's death. i just kind of decided that 22 would be a good age for lace to be and then needed to crunch the numbers to see how old phantom would have hypothetically been. if i did the math wrong um well no i didn't actually

didn't have much room to slip it in, but phantom being kind of shaken by just how much lace has grown since the last time they've seen her was meant to show up explicitly somewhere... the phone was the only instance of that i managed to elucidate in the end- and even then its kind of vague. but there's something to looking at a photo of your little sister and not recognizing... anyone. not the people she's hanging out with. not even her. in my mind i feel like phantom got most of that existential stuff out of the way before showing themself to lace.

lace not being able to force herself to express conventional emotions wasn't supposed to parallel phantom not being able to force themself to be vulnerable with lace (both as a child AND like. literally right now) but it worked very well, so maybe my subconscious is just like. kind of awesome.

phantom gets a brief stint as a deer entirely bc of how much they remind me of december holiday. thats just for me. thats mine. for me.

speaking of things that were for me, since uhh. checks calendar. since. april. i'd been wanting to write something yasg related. i was way more indecisive abt what, though. and also paranoid. i had spun around the concept of phantom's death for a while, but ultimately decided that i wouldn't know how much i would be able to add to something that happens so relatively quickly. also i wouldn't know who's pov to put it in. so it kind of never happened. oh well

there was a line i had to cut at the beginning of the fic abt ac bc snor said that they don't have ac in france. its so fucked because it was like. a paragraph and a half and it was really good too and i had to cut it. because theyre french. whatever… walks away and destroys a small hamlet

Perhaps the most offensive case of mischaracterization of Lace I've seen so far is not only the suggestion that she would be a morning person, but that she would get up before Hornet. Absolutely disgusting. You could not pay that girl to wake up at a reasonable time

#hornet just straight up doesnt sleep and lace gets so frustrated when she gets tired and falls asleep by accident just to wake up in the mor #ning (or afternoon) and hornet is just there like “you looked tired i decided to let you sleep”#girls body tells her she needs rest but she also needs to outdo hornet in every way possible
