While not on exhibit currently, this artefact has been included in our Ring of Fire exhibit (WWII Pacific conflict).
Known as a Senninbari, or a Thousand-Stitch Sash, it was a Japanese and Shinto tradition. Given to soldiers as a symbol of luck, they were predominantly made by a female family member. Each stitch was set in by various people, usually as the woman making the sash would travel the town. Elegant sashes were made from silk with soft thread, though many were made from cotton.

July 27th heralds the 60th anniversary of the Korean Armistice, and in honour of this occasion The Military Museums is holding a special commemoration ceremony at 11am.
Due to the recent flooding in Calgary, the officially opening speeches and celebrations for the Korean War exhibit will be held that day as well. We encourage all who can to come and celebrate with us on July 27th!

Year of the Korean Veteran
In January it was declared that 2013 would be the Year of the Korean War Veteran in Canada. It is the 60th anniversary of the Korean Armistice, a fitting time to celebrate and give memory to the Canadian men and women who served in the Korean conflict. Over 26,000 Canadian forces members served, with 512 Canadians who gave their lives during the course of the Korean War.
Veteran Affairs Canada has released an interactive, multimedia feature for any to experience. Featuring interviews, and documentary footage of the war, they strive to bring a strong presence of the importance this war played on a global, and personal, scale for many people.

If any happen to be in Calgary, make sure to stop by The Military Museums, and tour the Korean War exhibit in the Founders' Gallery.
Stretching 250 kilometres across Korea's 38th parallel, the Korean Demilitarized Zone serves a harsh border that separates North and South Korea. Created due to the Armistice Agreement in 1953, it has still seen several scores of incidents between both countries.
Brought back to Canada by a Korean Veteran, this piece of barb wire comes from the afore mentioned DMZ. It is currently on display in the Founder's Gallery at Calgary's Military Museums.
