❛ ARIEL FRANZESE:
Ariel had just gotten done with some light shopping and had arrived back to the apartment building. She’d picked out some summer clothes, mostly, as well as some new shoes - unnecessary things, really, but what did it matter? With her bag in hand, she’d gone to her box to check the mail - which just so happened to contain her paycheck. God fucking bless, because she needed to fill up her bike and was running low on funds. When she heard someone speak to her, Ari turned to face them with a slight smile of her own. “Oh - sure, I don’t see why not.” Her hands were full, though, so she set her shopping bags down on the ground and took the key. “3a you said, right?”
aja couldn’t lie but she was almost relieved when the woman agreed to lend her a hand. she didn’t know everyone in the apartment building, despite having lived there for 2 years, but was sure that not all of them would give her such mercy. maybe even ridicule her a little for even asking such a favour. but then again, perhaps she was being too harsh on the unidentified occupants that she hadn’t yet met. ❝ 3a, yep. ❞ she confirmed verbally, paired with a singular nod of her head. she leaned over the mail cart a little in an attempt to point out to the woman which box was hers when she couldn’t reach it herself. ❝ it’s that one, on the end there. see? ❞
❛ JOSEPHINE BEAUMONT:
It was one of the rare days that Josephine came home for her lunch break. The preschoolers were learning to dance today, and it had been a lot of fun for both Josephine and the children. Picking up food and a cold coffee, she came home and stuck the key into her mailbox to retrieve her mail, holding a stack of bills in her hand when she heard a female voice behind her. It came from a blonde that she didn’t recognize but realized must be another tenant of the apartments she hadn’t met yet and she smiled politely. “Of course,” she said, taking the key and opening up the girl’s mailbox and taking out the mail. She handed the mail to her and pulled her hand back with a smile. “I’m in apartment 6b if you ever run into me again,” she grinned.
taking back the small stack of mail when it was handed to her, as well as the key, she smiled gratefully. ❝ i mean we live in the same building, i’m sure we’ll run into each other soon enough. but then again, i don’t think we’ve met before? ❞ as aja was gazing at the woman, now that she thought about it she did seem kind of familiar. but not too familiar that she would have been able to pick her out of a crowd if you asked her which one of them lived in her apartment building, before today that was. ❝ i’m alex, but i prefer to be called aja. ❞ she held out her free hand for the woman to shake. ❝ it‘s more polite to introduce myself with my given name and then preferred nickname right? ❞ she realised she was rambling now and shook her head as if to apologise.
❛ JAMES MCKENZIE:
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Miss Armstrong.” James looked at Aja with a concerned face for a while, before looking at the phone. “I mean, it doesn’t look broken from here, and it’s not like I can actually buy you a new phone because I don’t have that much money, but I do have some tips that can help.” James said with a nod, before looking up at Aja, smiling back at her. “Also, please don’t call me Jimmy, it sounds like I’m a kid.”
❝ you know you don’t have to call me that, right? ❞ it wasn’t that she didn’t like the name, being called ‘miss armstrong’ actually made her feel kind of important. she wouldn’t let anyone other than james call her that, though. he was like a little brother to her, even like a son to some extent. ever since their parents had introduced them back in chicago they’d been pretty close, then when he had ended up coming here and moving in the same apartment, their relationship had only increased. ❝ i’m just messing with you, i need a new one anyway. ❞ she shoved the phone into the back pocket of her jeans before turning back to the younger man. ❝ you mean to tell me that you’re not a kid? ❞ she joked, flashing him a grin to let him know that.
❛ MARLOWE OWEN:
“um…” marlowe looked down at the books in her arms before hesitantly nodding her head. “uh, sure. yeah, ok.” marlowe looked at the cart blocking the appropriate box before shoving it out of her way. she was incredibly shy and non-confrontational but…what was worse? having to ask the man to move his cart or just doing it herself? besides, this was new york city. sometimes, you had to be a bit rude. she unlocked the box, grabbed its contents, and handed it to the woman. “promise you won’t report me to nypd for that?”
watching as the other woman pushed the cart out of the way, aja was almost impressed. she would have done it herself but too many run-ins with the guy had made her a little wary. ❝ oh, thank you. ❞ taking the mail from the other’s hand and placing it in the inside jacket of her pocket so that she wouldn’t drop it on her way back up, she pulled the most serious face she could muster up. ❝ who says i’m not from the nypd? that could have been a test. ❞ she then smiled. ❝ i think if i reported you that i’d somehow get indicted for this too and i really don’t want that right now. lips are sealed. ❞
❝ sorry excuse me, could i- ❞ one of the things that aja disliked about living in the apartments was getting the mail when the mailman came. and yet somehow she always timed it so that he was there whenever she did. he always put his cart right in front of the boxes so that she couldn’t access her apartments mailbox, and refused to move whenever she asked. spotting someone else getting their own mail, closer to the boxes than she could possibly get at that current moment, she thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask if they could give her a hand. ❝ hey, excuse me. if i give you the key to my box, could you get my mail for me? it’s apartment 3a. ❞ she asked politely, holding out her key with a small smile.
❛ THEO PRESCOTT:
It wasn’t until he arrived at the door that he recognized the woman. There weren’t a lot of queer people in his life due to his inability to live openly or as loud as some of the guys in New York, but he appreciated Aja. She kept him anchored to his true self. His brows furrowed in confusion and his head tilted slightly to the side as the reference went right over his head. “Who’s Mr. Rushmore?” he wondered. He frowned a little as the realization she was coming home already dawned on him. “I was hoping to head to the bar for a drink after I showered. Why did you close so early today? We’re supposed to be the city that never sleeps. Now I’ll have to sleep.”
as soon as she had recognised theo, both relief and happiness washed over her. he was one of the friends here that she really was thankful for. ❝ you. you were... rushing. ❞ now that she thought about it, the name wasn’t too creative, and didn’t make much sense even to her mind. she blamed it on the tired-ness. ❝ oh it’s not closed, it’s still open. i just got to go home early. lucky me. ❞ she pretended to celebrate, though in reality she was actually relieved. she’d been there since 8am that day, early starts and all that. despite her current tired-ness, she did want to hang out with him. maybe having a drink and someone actually interesting to talk to would wake her up. ❝ you could come to my apartment! it’s not quite a bar but i can tend to you with drinks. we can be the apartment that never sleeps. ❞
❛ JAMES MCKENZIE:
James was climbing the stairs up to his apartment, looking down at his feet as he climbed, until he bumped into someone who was coming down. He was taken by surprise because everyone used to take the elevator, but apparently not this time. “Oh, sorry, this usually doesn’t happen, I’m used to being alone when I climb the stairs. Are you okay?” James asked as he looked at the other person, smiling at them.
even though her apartment was only on the third floor, heading up the stairs was something that aja almost resented. walking down them however, was an action that she didn’t mind and she was doing just that, while looking down at her phone, when she bumped into someone. it didn’t take her long to realise that it was one of her roommates and she didn’t even mind when her phone fell to the floor due to the impact. ❝ jimmy! ❞ she exclaimed cheerfully knowing that he didn’t like that nickname, and bending down to pick up her phone. she needed a new one anyway and if it was broken, it would give her a real excuse to replace it. ❝ think you might owe me a new phone. ❞ she teased, flashing him a friendly smile.
❛ MARLEY CALLAHAN:
She wasn’t going to be accepted into the royal ballet anytime soon, that was for sure. But that was okay. Marley didn’t think she would like it very much, anyways. Much too strict. Too many rules. Dancing shouldn’t have rules. Then again, she just had never been too good at following them. Her dancing wasn’t particularly good. It wasn’t the impressive kind, or a type that required any sort of skill. In fact, it was nothing more than the old go to: closed eyes, swaying hips, hands over your head because you didn’t know what else to do with them. That kind. With the bass thumping in her chest, mimicking her heartbeat, she couldn’t help but think that this is what being alive should always feel like. Wanting to share this feeling, her eyes opened to survey the room, grin only brightening at the sight of a prospect (re: victim). There was no hesitation in her slinking her way through the sea of bodies until she was settled right in front of them. She leaned in to be heard over the music. “Dance with me!” It was a question, though not sounding like such. Pulling back with raised eyebrows, she reached a hand in the space between them, asking for their hand without really asking, though making no real move to touch. Not without permission. “You know you want to…” Her tone sing-songed. Was she aware that she was most definitely just projecting? Yes. But did she care? No.
drink in one hand and the other playing with a bracelet she had tied around her wrist, she had zoned out entirely to the conversations of the people she came to the club with. her co-workers, big mistake. she was never really the type to turn down going out for the night, but this was the complete opposite of her idea of fun. she rolled her eyes as the group laughed, she couldn’t really hear them over the music anyway and had distanced herself just a little away from them, not that they had noticed. when another woman approached her, her eyes widened and at the offer to dance, aja shrugged her shoulders as if to say ‘why not?’. why shouldn’t she dance? this was much more excitement than what her co-workers had offered her all evening and she didn’t really fancy standing around talking about work in the middle of a club. taking the other woman’s hand without hesitation, she barely glanced back at her co-workers, not really paying them any mind. not that she cared what they thought anyway. ❝ you know, it’s not every night that i get asked to dance by some random stranger that i just met. ❞ she spoke loudly over the music.
❛ THEO PRESCOTT:
it was a little ironic, as alanis morissette would put it, that he worked as a mechanic but hardly ever drove a car. it was new york city and business was booming because ubers and cabs broke down all the time, but there was no point in him actually getting one. but walking home late at night in nothing but a grease stained wife beater, he wished he had one. sometimes he wished he could drive off into the night– especially on shitty days as the one had had. he finally reached the apartment complex and rushed to the person that was ahead of him. they already had the door open and he didn’t want to go through the pain of searching for his keys. “hey, hold the door,” he called out as he jogged towards them.
working as a bartender, especially in such a busy city as new york, equated to long days and long nights. it was something that she was very much used to by now, but it didn’t change how tired she would be arriving home after a stressful shift. the bar wasn’t too far away, maybe a ten minute walks tops, five on a good day or if she was running late. the walk home tonight however had seemed to drag on, all she wanted to do was get into bed. heading into the apartment complex, aja didn’t really pay much attention to anything other than her own exhaustion, but the sound of someone calling behind her made her turn and look out into the night, spotting a man not too far away. she hadn’t heard what he had said, due to being in her own thoughts, but assumed he wanted her to hold the door. ❝ you’re welcome, mr. rushmore. ❞ she joked with a small smile once he had arrived and she could let the door close behind them.
( brie larson. twenty seven. female. she&her. ) ❛ alexandra “aja” armstrong, a pisces from chicago, illinois, moved into holloway two years ago. they are a bartender that lives in apartment 3a and their neighbors don’t particularly mind them. some say they can be -unpredictable and -erratic but others say they’re +laidback and +trustworthy. anyways, one thing is for sure: you hear them changes by thundercat, it’s aja blasting it.
