When I say that Wiress altered my brain chemistry I mean it bc whenever I see 49 my mind immediately goes to her😭😭
Despite me adoring Effie and Maysilee’s friendship in SOTR I’m a bit sad at the lost opportunity to have her bond with Wiress. Honestly the whole book the characters felt a bit.. sheltered? Isolated? Like Despite half of the d12 team consisting of characters we already met and love, I didn’t see nearly as much interactions between them as I would have wanted. And dare I say it kind of harms the story as well! I mean, yes the Effie and Maysilee bond means to show that the capapitolites and district people are truly just that-people. And that it’s not the people but rather the governments that are the root problem. But in addition to doing that S.C could have added an additional layer to May’s character by having her recognize that a person from another district (remember that there is also a huge divide between the districts of Panem which is a very important factor in the entirety of the HG story) is also just a girl!! For example Wiress could have shared something about her own experience with the stylists? It would also be a good foreshadowing moment for the way Haymitch is going to be treated later on!! Through their personalities and story functions Wiress and Maysilee could have been a perfect window into the world building of the games and add a deeper layer to Snow’s plot of growing resentment in between districts. And I know that Wiress and Maysilee might have not had a lot to talk about considering their differing interests and personalities, and yet I still yearn for 2 reaped girls who think they share little in common understanding each other and truly seeing each other past their reapings and districts. May could’ve reminded Wiress of girls from back home(WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT CHANCE TO GET A GLIMPSE AT ANOTHER DISTRICTS CLASS DIVIDE/PEOPLE!!) but all of that is either offscreened or did not take place at all. Lots and lots of missed opportunities imo
Forgive me if this post is all over the place but I’m just a bit upset at the many missed opportunities with Wiress :((
After schoolwork murdered me I have been successfully brought back to life
And thus the Wiress obsession begins again!
What I truly hope we get in the movie is more Wiress and Wyatt. I talked before how fascinating I find them, and I believe that the movie has a chance to explore upon this very interesting dynamic
First of all, Wyatt is the oldest of the d12tributes at 18 years old, Wiress would have only been 1 year older than him, or possibly even younger. So you understand how weird and unsettling it is that a girl that could’ve been your classmate is now teaching you how to avoid certain death.
Second of all, they are both very smart. But not just smart-calculating. Wiress seems to uplift him a lot:
The quote “Mention me, smarts can win” (not the exact words) proves that, I think it’s because she sees a bit of herself in him, and in a way relates to him.
Not to mention that Wyatt, who is so alone, not really liked by May or Hay in the beginning, believing in the cruel irony of him being reaped due to his father’s work, would really appreciate genuine support and compassion that Wiress offered him. And not only that, she would also believe that he can get out of this alive, perhaps the first to ever do so. Wyatt who already has a goal to protect Lou Lou, would have this one blessing, the feeling that twists something in his stomach but also makes his heart warm, he knows that no one is betting on him back home, and most definitely not anywhere in Panem. But his could-be classmate is, and maybe that’s enough.
I want more moments that explore this side of their relationship, moments that humanize Wiress rather than using her as a mentor plot device.
These factors create an awkward and painful friendship. In the end, they knew each other for less than a month, and Wiress will be overflown with loss and pain, and yet, her heart will always be heavy with the loss of her first tribute. All she has are a few memories and some warm words exchanged. And she isn’t dumb, she knows that he sacrificed himself, he killed himself. And sometimes she would wonder: “Had I done more to help him, would he make that choice? Was there anything I could do to make him try just a little more?”
In another life they would take the same calculus class and would talk about their favorite books and movies, in another life she would be helping him prepare for the neighborhood math competition. But this is the hand that they’ve been dealt and they(she) must live with it.
Sometimes I think about the hc about Wiress’ discomfort with mirrors and reflections and it makes me uneasy because yes, you can remove all mirrors in the house but you can’t remove all reflections. Things like water/metal surfaces/even clean plates sometimes can reflect and overall reflections are very hard to avoid. Wiress would have to encounter them in her workshop a lot since she works with shiny and polished things, she’d also be stuck directly in front of a mirror(or maybe even multiple mirrors) with her stylists at least once a year for the games/Capitol visits, and worst of all, Beetee’s glasses. Imagine you’re sharing an amazing time with the love of your life, staring at your handsome husband and his silly glasses and then you see it, your slightly distorted, barely noticeable reflection, but it’s not your 30-year old self you’re seeing but a teenager in a silver jump suit, or worse, a nonexistent tribute getting ready to attack (Because I’m sure that while nobody did discover Wiress’ hiding spot there have been close calls) so yeah trauma surrounding reflections sucks. I don’t think that Wiress’ discomfort with reflections goes as far as to call it a phobia but it definitely doesn’t bring happy memories, even if she did manage to use the mirrors doesn’t mean she wasn’t as scared and disturbed as the other tributes in her arena, having to be mindful of the smallest shift or movement, constantly checking if your blind spot can be discovered, seeing the brutality and despair at the corner of your eye and also being on constant lookout for it because you needed to keep track of the tributes left in the game, all that is of course extremely traumatic and what’s even worse is that it’s extremely easy to trigger in the future. My poor girl hasn’t caught a break since the day she was reaped 😩
My preview for the @thgzine that you are able to preorder right now if you want some exclusive art and writing from a bunch of talented people from this fandom 🫶🫶✨
Supplying a friend with hcs for fanfics is soooo fun I love when she asks me 🤩🤩🤩🤩
She’s writing about one of my alllll time fav hcs which is: Wiress has an insanely good internal clock, I love seeing her explore that theme AHAHAHSJXKNWSNNANNZ
Actually I can’t believe I never touched on that b4 bc it’s one of my first hcs ever about her
Oh wait an AU struck me where Haymitch and the squad are students who for some reason were assigned ‘mentors’ in the face of Wiress who is a senior and is a valedictorian and Mags aka the biology(fav topic: marine biology) teacher. As such a little study group is formed where the duo of mentors help the kids up their grades/get into clubs/participate in competitions and it’s very nice. And I don’t care they Louella and Lou Lou are 13, who said they have to be in the same grade??
Years later Wiress and Haymitch somehow end up in that school as teachers :D
School aus are my favorite type of aus I just love them, bonus points if there’s also Chaff and Blight and Alina(female morphing) as ‘mentors’ to other kids!
Some dark Wiress art I felt compelled to make. Got to hand it to SotR for making me feel like creating content again.
I honestly think Haymitch and Wiress have some of the most complex relationships in the whole fanchchise: First off: they are peers, the most age difference that can have is 2-3 years only, but Wiress feels like she is at least a decade older, the games age you, the Capitol forces you to grow up in a span of 3 weeks, in SOTR she’s not a teenager anymore, she’s a victor, a murderer survivor. And now a mentor, and she tries her best to not think about how she could be classmates with Wyatt, so she tries to be as practical as she can, but here’s the thing: she’s still a teenager, no matter how much she or the Capitol denies it. She’s scared and unstable and already grieving, clinging to the hope that she won’t lose 8 people by aiding the rebellion, and when eventually she’s proven wrong in the worst way imaginable she’s left with Haymitch, an equally broken child-turned-adult. She knows what’s waiting for his family, she also knows that her own family is likely going to face the same fate. Her mind is fogged and cracked, his is dulled and angry. And she wants to, she truly does, not to resent him, but she does, and in return he resents her. Because she, even though she couldn’t have influenced the arena, fueled his hope of a brighter future only for him to lose everything and more, because he, even though she knows it’s not his fault, was one of the reasons she was tortured into oblivion. They also resent themselves, because it’s partially her fault he succumbed into addiction, because it’s his failure that caused her to lose her mind. They are stuck in a loop of miscommunication and guilt and resentment, all which are mixed with alcohol, trauma and physical distance. They can’t and won’t talk, not until years later. It takes them many years, arguments and quiet moments alone to achieve some sort of closure. It happens when she recovers enough from the trauma of the games, when he is sober enough to comprehend the memories. Maybe they talk for hours, maybe they just sit together, hands clasped and understanding settling between the victors. But one thing is certain: it’s far too late for them to tell each other : “it’s not your fault” they’ve carried that guilt for years, it will be harder to let go of it than to continue carrying it at this point, but what they can give each other is: I’m not mad. Because now they really are adults, the guilt is here, resentment-not so much, only in sparks of anger or a particularly bad night, but overall they no longer feel spite towards each other. She’ll never fully recover but she can invent and live and love again, and he is too deep into his addiction to ever allow himself these things, that is, not until the rebellion is over and he slowly starts to get better.
At the time of the rebellion they no longer have much to say to each other, they exchange warm embraces and (few) fond memories, but mostly discuss the rebel plan. He knows that her love is going in that arena, she knows that his children are going in the arena, Wiress already made the same promise as everyone to protect the mockingjay, but she also makes a quiet note to try and take care of them, Haymitch knows that Beetee will be crucial for the plan, so he’ll also he in priority, but he still wants to help him out of his own ambitions. It’s the same thought process that makes him want to offer some kind of comfort after her death.
When the rebellion is over and he starts to recover he understands that what led to an overflowing guilt and resentment and tears and screams and then comfort between the mentor and tribute turned victor and victor are two teens who only had care for each other and were denied the opportunity of support or closure for the longest time.
Jesus that was long and honestly a bit messy and not exactly what I had in mind for their dynamic, but as much as I am a Beetress warrior I can’t not say that Hayress(?) doesn’t intrigue me, though I should say they are more of a platonic ship to me. I honestly have so much lighter hcs for them but I’ll go with this one: Haymitch was Wiress’ best man at her wedding (what is a male maid of honor for the bride? Butler of honor?) anyways, I love them
I am back with thoughts about Wiress and Chaff, aka the canon 40th games duo. They both had their victories close to each other (45&49) and based on what Wiress shares at the time of their games the tributes were treated much much harsher than what we see in the original trilogy. I think that creates a certain ‘us and them’ between the generations of victors, and Chaff and Wiress in this scenario are subconsciously bonded, despite their arenas and games and even traumas being completely different there is a part that both of them can relate to. And later on the two will also share a very special relationship with Haymitch, so they’re kinda homies in law lol. I honestly don’t think they’re that close even with all of these factors, but they most definitely share snarky comments about people they mutually dislike or the Capitolites. They also each have very VERY different opinions on Effie which leads to banter here and there. They’re cool like that, and for better or worse they understand each other the way neither Beetee nor Haymitch nor Seeder can.
Lighter hc even though this was already pretty light: In a modern universe or even in canon, they absolutely rock the karaoke together, full on stage worthy duet, you can never convince me otherwise
hi other wiress fan!! i didn't know there was more than me that were still active. i love her so muchh she's my girl i need to talk about her more
Hello!!! Wiress is the best!! Could never run out of things to talk about when it comes to her :3 good to meet a fellow Wiress lover!!!!
Wiress nation how are we feeling about the fact that she provides one of the most interesting world building contributions to the games history, aka the fact that during her time as a tribute they kept them in barracks. All tributes, no separations, you have to share a space with other children whom you’ll be expected to murder and be murdered by. The absolute lack of privacy and agency that the tributes had up until the second quell is such a hugely overlooked thing, in no way am I saying that the after quell tributes somehow had it better but it definitely plays in the Capitol’s plot of diving the districts, even the victors. Because to Wiress and Chaff it would always subconsciously be “well at least they had that” in their minds, they would unconsciously already have a separation and a sense of injustice in their gut about the newest victors. Which is such an interesting thing to develop and think about for dynamics and relationships between victors, how their divide by age groups/districts is so much more than it seems and is a direct consequence of the Capitol’s tactics.
Or I am cornplating, idc to be honest I just want to talk about Wiress
Speaking of Wiress and dynamics… Chaff and Wiress you are next
Life update the exams did in fact kick my ass but at least I’m finally on summer break
Anyways I’ve seen ppl say that Wiress was useless as a mentor for 12 and like… did we read the same book? You mean the Wiress that was the one to give Haymitch the advice to avoid the bloodbath and look for water? The very advice he would go on to give Katniss and Peeta and likely all of his previous tributes? That Wiress? And the one who suggested to find arena clues in the first place??????? I swear to god come on! Haymitch felt more of a connection to Mags bc she resembled a motherly figure, someone who would hold him and offer him kind words, and Mags gave amazing support and advice but it was Wiress whom gave the most practical advice! Ppl need to understand that both women were vital for the plot and contributed to it hugely!! Honestly that’s a bit on Suzanne too bc there was so much more she could do with the mentors and they weren’t explored too deeply but still!
It’s a trend I’ve noticed ever since Catching fire bc a lot of people overlooked her contribution to, oh I don’t know.. CRACKING THE ARENA and now some people are acting like she was unimportant in SOTR.. that woman needs her long overdue flowers
Absolutely random Wiress hc: she’s allergic to exotic fruits, like mango for example, she finds out along with everyone else when she goes into anaphylactic shock at her victory party, which earns her a few more weeks off press and Capitol meetings, she never though she would be grateful to get an allergy but then again she also never though she would win the Hunger games and here she is.
Years later and Bee still is very anxious whenever they are at a function and she comes anywhere near her allergies trigger, she finds it adorable
Alright, had my breakfast and rambled at a friend, still mad about that take I saw, time for a bit of a fandom rant.
So I’m going to preface this by saying I don’t care what ships anyone else likes or doesn’t like, and people are free to dislike my fave ships, so don’t think that this is coming from that or some ship wars bs. Ship them, don’t ship them, write them as deeply toxic and codependent or as the happiest little found family imaginable, ship them with everyone else in the fandom but each other. I genuinely don’t care.
But some of you who are being very vocal about how SOTR gives you the confirmation you needed that Beetee and Wiress were just good friends/or a father-daughter or other sort of caregiver type relationship are sounding incredibly ableist.
Seriously. If I see one more take that goes all in on regurgitating the same talking around points that just boil down to ‘blah blah, he takes care of her it’s so sweet, but also they just never read as in a relationship because I think he’s basically her babysitter, I can’t see her as being in a relationship because she has support needs, but I’m going to lean on SOTR setting their age difference (which let’s be very real, 10-ish years when the youngest of them is in her 40’s by CF is not a problematic age difference and hasn’t been in a while) as justification despite the fact I was saying all the rest of this for years before having that to lean on’ I am going to lose it.
Because let’s be real. It’s the same bs when people infantilize Annie for having support needs and forget that she too was a Career tribute who explicitly went through some serious trauma that caused her to require assistance in certain areas of her life (literally, my girl was basically Cashmere who happened to be the sort of traumatized the Capitol couldn’t make as palatable and with a ‘boring’ game so she got ignored, THAT’S IT). She just gets to keep her relationship status (sometimes, there are plenty of people out there who are willing to say the ableism out loud there too) because she’s pretty enough that Katniss does a double take while introducing us to her, and if she’s conventionally that attractive, it matters slightly less that she has major support needs (tbh more than Wiress in canon when removed from the arena, Wiress canonically is able to work and invent prolifically and more or less live her life on her own as she likes, she just has visible physical and verbal tics/stims and struggles to communicate verbally in ways that are easily understood by those who don’t know her well at times. Annie canonically struggles to live alone, is much more reliant on having her support network around to help her function in day to day life, and this is not me judging her for that because the point is, THEY BOTH HAVE SUPPORT NEEDS BUT ONLY THE CONVENTIONALLY PRETTY ONE IS SOMEONE SOME OF YOU CAN SEE BEING LOVED OR IN A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP AND YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE HER SUPPORT NEEDS IF YOU CAN’T MAKE THEM CUTE/PALATABLE.). Some of you are only giving Annie a pass on believing she can be loved because you can Manic Pixie Dream Girl her or Smol Precious Angel Baby her and neither is a good read of canon, and both are fucked up.
So yeah. Like I said, I don’t actually care if you don’t like the ship. It’s smashing imaginary people together and making them kiss, that’s not that serious. What I care about is that some of you clearly believe that a woman needs to be convenient, or else pretty enough to make up for being inconvenient at times, otherwise she isn’t worthy of being loved or in a relationship. Because that’s fucked up. Do better.
i wish i could talk about wiress and mags to my boyfriend who has not read SotR yet
I’ve been trying (and failing) to peer pressure my irl friends and partners into reading it for this exact reason. You can talk to me about my best girls if you like… (open invitation, not restricted just to OP, but like, come chat, I like to rant about my faves)
Same😭😭😭😭 I’ve been on a mission to make my friends watch at least the movies and even suggested having me read to them as a bedtime story(actually showed up at my besties home w that intention) so far no success but mark my word my friends WILL join the fandom one day
Probably my hottest hot take is that Wiress isn’t well liked among district 3. And huge chunk of the reason goes back to the second quell of course.
First of all Wiress won the 49th games, it as very widely recognized hc and I would even say semi-canon that if a non career district wins the attention of the careers will automatically go to the newest victor’s tribute, hence by winning the 49th games, in the eyes of district 3, Wiress already painted a target on the backs of 4 children. Then she is announced as the mentor for district 12. The Capitol uses the games widely to separate the districts, to create a spite between them, to create a visible ‘us’ and ‘them’ in order to divide their attention from the real enemy, they don’t know that Wiress was forced into mentoring, or that she had no idea she would even be mentoring but they see that she is with another district. If earlier she painted a target on the kids’ backs, now she’s actively working out a plan to kill them. That is seen as ultimate betrayal on her part, not to mention she’s working with a career mentor(even if Mags wasn’t a career she definitely had a hand in making 4 a career district). All hell breaks loose when Haymitch wins, Wiress had done it now, brought back home a victor, only the victor is from another district and there are 4 coffins, one of which belong to her mentor’s son, on their way to district 3. Obviously some people understand that Haymitch wasn’t actually responsible for the deaths of their kids, so blaming him or Wiress isn’t really right, but the people need a scapegoat, someone to channel the grief of 4 dead children on and Wiress is in the middle of it all. Moreover she comes back ‘wrong’, bird-like and twitchy, we as readers know that it’s a product of immense trauma and torture, the district only sees that their most recent victor went nuts for whatever reason. As a result Wiress comes back home with not 2 but 7 dead people haunting her and a whole district whose grace she just lost. I think realistically she wouldn’t care as she never truly cared about appearances and how people viewed her, but that was in the Capitol, this is Home, and no matter how wrong or how insane their views on her are it’s a very painful thing to go through. Time passed and the district warms up to Wiress again, but her legacy has been secured now, there’s no running from it, not in the Capitol, not home, she might start believing the words that are said about her, even if it’s irrational, which contributes to the decline of her mental state, people acknowledge the trauma of torture she endured after the games but some miss out the raw grief and pain she suffered during the quell, and the way district 3 received her after her arrival home only makes it worse, so much worse.
Oh and did I mention she was 19 AT MOST??? Bias aside I feel like Wiress deserved her own book, the exploration of mentoring for another district, relationships (and maybe resentment) that she would develop with Mags, Haymitch and even Beetee as a result, the overall dynamic between her and 3’s victors, Beetee’s wife and the district after coming back home, the things that went down in the arena and the things that went down in her head would all align very well with the themes of propaganda and nuanced revolution that SOTR follows
