If you loved the idea of Beetee and Wiress together after reading Catching Fire but are disgusted with yourself for having shipped them after the new revelations in SotR, stop. Hold on. I want to talk to you.

First of all, no one is going to be changing their longstanding ships because people entering the fandom from SotR declare the new (retconned) canon LAW. (This also applies to Hayffie, Haysilee, and so on.) Just because Collins decided to reconfigure a few details of established characters to fit the needs of the prequel’s plot does not mean we are not allowed to appreciate the adult relationship we admired in CF, with the details we had then. Beetee did not have children, or a wife, that we knew of. He and Wiress were both middle aged and clearly connected in a special way. None of SotR’s “revealed backstory” changes how I view their relationship. It’s fine if you shipped them once and now prefer not to, but to say that you feel guilt or shame (or are guilting and shaming other fans) because you could not predict a future retcon from a book we never expected to get is a bit much. You can still let people enjoy the canon we had from the original trilogy.

I rewatched the Catching Fire movie yesterday(for about the tenth time)

And out of all the things I could have noticed I was painfully reminded once again of how cute Wiress and Beetee were 😭

Like I know their age gap is revealed in SOTR but in Catching Fire they were portrayed(in my opinion) as a married couple(in fact even my dad who was watching for the first time was immediately like ‘omg are they wife and husband’ and you don’t get to disagree with my dad so) and they are SO DAMN ADORABLE

Their friendship??? Their matching weirdness??? How Beetee touches her cheek before the private training??? How he’s taking care of her in the arena and making sure she’s okay??? HIS FACE AFTER GLOSS KILLED HER??? HOW HE LOOKED UP AT HER PICTURE IN THE SKY??????? I CAN’T

As you may have guessed they’re one of my favorite couples in THG

beetee and wiress who became neighbours in the victor's village. wiress being invited to the latiers house for a meal. beetee's wife and her becoming friends. wiress playing with ampert after dinner. wiress who then had to become mentor of ampert one year later. wiress who was likely the only one in the room with beetee when he had to watch his son die on screen. beetee who returned to district 3 to his wife without their son. beetee and his wife finding out she's pregnant while grieving ampert. wiress who became more isolated due to the torture. beetee who visited his friend consistently to drop by some food even if she couldn't give a verbal response to him. wiress who may have had a partner before the quarter quell who couldn't be with her anymore after she was broken down by the torture. beetee who lost his wife sometime later. wiress who mourned her with him. beetee and wiress who relied on each other through pain. wiress who taught beetee's daughter how to braid her hair. beetee who kept dropping by soup on her doostep until one evening she was strong enough to go back to a dinner with the latiers. beetee and wiress whose friendship grew stronger, relying on each other. wiress and beetee whose first time was an accident, full of the tenderness, physical touch and care they both needed. beetee and wiress, close friends and practical lovers, two in one. beetee who helped in the making of the rebel plan, wiress who was there to be part of it again, just as she was in the first one. beetee who blamed himself for not protecting her. wiress who'll forever be in beetee's mind and in beetee's heart, another loved one he lost but will never forget. his ampert. his wife. his wiress.

Never actually stated that but since some people got annoyed with me because I ship hayffie, because he loved lenore dove, well let me tell you I also ship wiress and beetee. I hc that his wife and second child died at childbirth and after a while he moved on. Which doesn‘t mean he doesn‘t love them anymore or forgot them, it just means he loves someone else too.

And hot take but:

I shouldn’t have to need to defend myself on the things I imagine that happend in a fantasy novel. Maybe it‘s because I grew up in the marauders fandom but something I learned is that a ship doesn‘t have to be:

canon,

possible,

plausible,

perfect,

healthy,

normal,

or even legal,

sometimes the people that ship it don‘t even want it to be canon, they just ship it because it‘s fun.

When I was younger people shipped Elsa with Jack Frost and they‘re not even in the same universe.

If you don‘t like something don‘t interact with it and you wont have to see it again. You could also block accounts who post about things you don’t like. It is perfectly alright to ask someone why this is their opinion an also state your own if it fits, but don’t hate.

It is pretty simple actually.

And one more thing, if someone actually does list reasons why they like/dislike a character/ship and someone correctes them about facts or quotes they got wrong, with correct facts or quotes it‘s not undermining of opinions it just a correction.
