This passage is why I find it hard to believe that Michael stayed in the Circle purely out of love for Robert. TSC shows again and again that love will not always conquer all, and here we see that Michael is a good enough man to doubt his beloved in pursuit of truth and justice. He loves Robert, but he doesn't trust Robert to make all the correct decisions on behalf of them both. Michael is challenging Valentine here, as he refuses to accept the narrative presented by Valentine and expects his relationship with Robert to overpower Robert's loyalty to the Circle. It's a genuinely heroic moment, and it makes me wonder where all that heroism went.
