Alejandro Antonio Navarro Estefan was born in Barcelona, Spain to Félix, a Spanish environmental engineer, and Ana Lucia, a Mexican-Canadian astrophysicist. Alejandro is an only child and, when he was very young, his family moved to Mexico City where both his parents were working for several years. When he was fourteen, the family moved again, this time to Washington, D.C., where his mother had been relocated to work for NASA in their astrophysics division. During his teens, he stayed with his mother while his father often traveled for work and spent extended periods of time in Argentina. The nature of his parents’ careers placed a lot of strain on their marriage and they eventually decided to get divorced.
At the time of the divorce, Alejandro believed it was only because of the strain from his parents’ careers that they decided to part ways, but he later found out that both his mother and father had come to question their sexuality at a later stage in their life and decided to part ways in order to live their lives more authentically. The family remained close and, while his parents weren’t married anymore, their relationship transitioned into a very strong friendship. Alejandro was a junior in high school then and began experimenting with his own sexuality, trying to figure out who he was and finding out what was comfortable to him.
Shortly after, Ana Lucia met a South African woman with whom she developed a relationship with and with Alejandro’s graduation close at hand, she was offered a professorship at the University of Cape Town. Alejandro had by then become firmly interested in the medical profession, especially cardiology, and so he decided to move with his mother to Cape Town where he enrolled as a medical student at the University of Cape Town.
Eventually, after eight years of study, Alejandro graduated as a doctor. He took a year off afterward to visit his father in Spain and some of his mother’s family in Canada, and while there, he decided to pursue his postgraduate specialisation in cardiology at the University of British Columbia. After completing his studies and his specialisation, he worked for three more years in Victoria before being offered a cardiology position in Kelowna at Okanagan Hospital. He decided to take it and has lived in Kelowna for the last three years.
Although he’s an introvert by nature and takes his work very seriously, he has a playful and friendly nature. He can be a little shy and awkward at first when meeting people outside of work, but he starts to open up quickly to people as he gets to know them better and warms up to him.
Now that he’s settled in Kelowna, he’s trying to expand his interests and hobbies a bit after years of solely focusing on his studies. He’s trying new things, such as learning to paint, learning to play guitar, trying yoga - some of which often don’t stick - and is enjoying the experience of just being in one place with a stable job and no other plans other than to enjoy his life.
